The Association Between Regular Physical Activity and Depressive Symptoms Among Patients in Treatment of Alcohol and Substance Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and other substance use disorders and major depression often co-occur. A sedentary lifestyle is related to major depression and even moderate exercise may prevent and contribute to the treatment of depression. Studies have found an effect of physical activity on depression in alcohol and other substance use disorder patients even in clinical settings. AIM: To investigate the relationship between level of physical activity and depressive symptoms over time in alcohol and substance use disorder inpatients. METHODS: Eighty-nine substance use disorder inpatients were followed

The association of benzodiazepine and benzodiazepine-related drugs with outcomes after surgery for colorectal cancer.

Benzodiazepines increase plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) level which, in turn, may improve survival in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between benzodiazepine and benzodiazepine-related drugs (BZRD) use and outcomes of patients operated for CRC. This is a retrospective cohort study including patients operated for CRC at Limoges' University Hospital between 2010 and 2019. Data were collected from two sources: medical records of patients in the digestive, general and endocrine surgery department at Limoges University Hospital and fro

Vitamin D levels are associated with trait resilience but not depression in a general population sample.

INTRODUCTION: Insufficient vitamin D levels were found to be related to various psychiatric disorders and particularly depression. The functional polymorphisms rs4588 and rs7041 of the vitamin D-binding protein (also group-specific component or Gc) influence vitamin D level and activity. Resilience is considered the individual predisposition to maintain psychological functioning in the face of adversities. We sought to investigate whether associations of vitamin D levels and genotypes of rs4588 and rs7041 were associated with trait resilience and symptoms of depression. METHODS: Serum levels

Developing community-based health education strategies with family history: Assessing the association between community resident family history and interest in health education.

BACKGROUND: Family history (FH) is an underutilized genetically informative tool that can influence disease prevention and treatment. It is unclear how FH fits into the development of community-based health education. This study examines the role that FH plays in perceived threat and health education related to mental and chronic physical conditions in the context of the health belief model. METHODS: Data were collected from 1,048 adult participants aged 18-90 years. Approximately 76% of participants indicated African-American race/ethnicity and 35% had less than high school level education.

Osteocalcin is associated with testosterone in the general population and selected patients with bone disorders.

Research in the last decade has revealed that bone is not only a target tissue for numerous circulating hormones but functions as an endocrine organ itself. As a recent study demonstrated a stimulatory effect of the osteoblast-derived hormone osteocalcin (OCN) on testosterone production in mice, we investigated whether such an association can be replicated in humans. We used data from 1338 men (25-86 years) in the population-based epidemiological Study of Health in Pomerania and from 110 male outpatients with bone disorders (18-85 years) for the study. We analysed cross-sectional associations

A longitudinal investigation of mortality in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE Although anorexia nervosa has a high mortality rate, our understanding of the timing and predictors of mortality in eating disorders is limited. The authors investigated mortality in a long-term study of patients with eating disorders. METHOD Beginning in 1987, 246 treatment-seeking female patients with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa were interviewed every 6 months for a median of 9.5 years to obtain weekly ratings of eating disorder symptoms, comorbidity, treatment participation, and psychosocial functioning. From January 2007 to December 2010 (median follow-up of 20 years), vi
