Biological processes underlying co-use of alcohol and nicotine: neuronal mechanisms, cross-tolerance, and genetic factors.

Alcohol and nicotine are two of the oldest and most commonly used recreational drugs, and many people use both of them together. Although their ready availability likely contributes to the strong correlation between alcohol and nicotine use, several lines of evidence suggest that biological factors play a role as well. For example, both alcohol and nicotine act on a brain system called the mesolimbic dopamine system, which mediates the rewarding and reinforcing properties of both drugs. Modification of the activities of the mesolimbic dopamine system can interfere with the effects of both alco

Suicide by carbon monoxide from car exhaust-gas in Denmark 1995-1999.

In the period 1995-1999 there were 388 car exhaust-gas suicides in Denmark. Of these 343 (88.4%) were men and 45 (11.6%) were women, the average age being 47 years. The car exhaust-gas suicides made up 9.3% of all suicides in Denmark in the period. The corresponding rate was 11.7% for men and 3.7% for women. In rural areas a larger part of all suicides were committed with car exhaust-gas compared to the more densely populated areas. Mental disease was diagnosed in 124 (32.0%) cases. A suicide note was found in 165 (42.5%) cases. A hose was fitted to the exhaust pipe in 334 (86.1%) cases. Of th

[Early diagnosis important in hearing loss in children].

Owing to the identification of pre-, peri- and post-natal risk factors for the development of hearing loss or impairment, diagnosis is now possible at 10-14 months of age and rehabilitative measures can be implemented. It is vital that hearing impairment is discovered at an early stage, as language development occurs predominantly before the age of three. Several methods have been evolved for testing hearing in infants.

Predictors of depression in street youth.

The extent of depression and other psychiatric problems among adolescent "street" and homeless populations is largely undocumented. Using a sample of 145 adolescent street youth interviewed in Toronto, Canada, this study attempted to extend the knowledge of street youth by examining the association of depression with alcohol and drug use and related problems, social supports, self-esteem, family background, and alcohol and drug use among family members. The results indicated that the best predictors of depression among street youth were self-esteem and length of time spent in a hostel.

Agreement between laboratory tests and self-reports of alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, marijuana and other drug use in post-partum women.

The agreement between self-reported consumption of several drugs and laboratory tests used to detect their use is examined. Post-partum women (N = 108) enrolled in a research study participated in a detailed interview covering alcohol and caffeine ingestion, tobacco smoking and use of marijuana and other psychoactive drugs. They also kept a 4-day record of their use of these substances. Blood and urine samples were taken and a physical exam done at the close of the record period. Laboratory tests to detect use of alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, marijuana and other drugs were carried out and the re

The Interplay Between Dietary Choline and Cardiometabolic Disorders: A Review of Current Evidence.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Choline is an essential nutrient for human health and cellular homeostasis as it is necessary for the synthesis of lipid cell membranes, lipoproteins, and the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. The aim of this review is to analyze the beneficial effects of choline and its significance in cellular metabolism and various inflammatory pathways, such as the inflammasome. We will discuss the significance of dietary choline in cardiometabolic disorders, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and chronic kidney disease (CKD) a

Neural affective mechanisms associated with treatment responsiveness in veterans with PTSD and comorbid alcohol use disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with neuro-physiological abnormalities reflecting increased anticipatory anxiety and reactivity to traumatic cues. It remains unclear whether neural mechanisms associated with PTSD treatment responsiveness, i.e. hyperactivation of the affective salience network in the brain, extend to a comorbid PTSD and substance use disorder population. Thirty-one Veterans with PTSD and co-occurring alcohol use disorder (AUD) were randomly assigned to either prolonged exposure or a non-exposure based treatment. They completed an affective anticipation task

Orthorexia nervosa: A review of psychosocial risk factors.

Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is a condition described as a pathological obsession with healthy eating. This paper will review the prevalence of ON and how ON is measured. The primary objective is to critically analyze findings on the psychosocial risk factors associated with ON, to consider its relation to other mental disorders, and to offer directions for future research. The key words "orthorexia" and "orthorexia nervosa" were searched in the databases PsycINFO and MEDLINE/PubMed. This paper reviewed peer-reviewed articles published up until December 31st, 2018. Quality assessment was conducted

Adipocytes orchestrate obesity-related chronic inflammation through β2-microglobulin.

Chronic inflammation in adipose tissue is widely recognized as a pivotal link connecting obesity to a spectrum of related chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular disorders. In this pathogenic process, the dysregulated interaction between adipocytes and adipose-resident immune cells plays a critical regulatory role; however, the underlying mechanisms governing this abnormal interaction remain largely unknown. In this study, we showed that upregulated β2-microglobulin expression in hypertrophic adipocytes during obesity not only mediated

Transdiagnostic Mood, Anxiety, and Trauma Symptom Factors in Alcohol Use Disorder: Neural Correlates Across 3 Brain Networks.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with high rates of trauma, mood, and anxiety disorders. Across these diagnoses, individual symptoms substantially overlap, highlighting the need for a transdiagnostic approach. Furthermore, there is limited research on how transdiagnostic psychopathology impacts the neural correlates of AUD. Thus, we aimed to identify symptom factors spanning diagnoses and examine how they relate to the neurocircuitry of addiction. METHODS: Eighty-six veterans with AUD completed self-report measures and reward, incentive salience, and cognitive control func

Sleep Disorders in Patients With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

A growing body of evidence supports a bidirectional relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sleep disturbances. Fragmented sleep induced by sleep-related breathing disorders, insomnia, and nightmares impacts recovery and treatment outcomes and worsens PTSD symptoms. Despite recent attention, management of these disorders has been unrewarding in the setting of PTSD. This review summarizes the evidence for empirically supported treatments of these sleep ailments, including psychotherapeutic and pharmacologic interventions, as it relates to PTSD. Recent advances in positive

Identification of risk variants and cross-disorder pleiotropy through multi-ancestry genome-wide analysis of alcohol use disorder.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is highly heritable and burdensome worldwide. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) can provide new evidence regarding the aetiology of AUD. We report a multi-ancestry GWAS focusing on a narrow AUD phenotype, using novel statistical tools in a total sample of 1,041,450 individuals [102,079 cases; European, 75,583; African, 20,689 (mostly African-American); Hispanic American, 3,449; East Asian, 2,254; South Asian, 104; descent]. Chronic Hypertonic Hyponatremia in Lung Cancer: The Utility of the Osmolar Gap.

Hyponatremia is a frequent electrolyte disorder encountered in clinical practice. The differential diagnosis is vast and requires a methodical approach to determining the cause. Hypotonic hyponatremia is the commonest form and syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is a typical cause, especially in patients who have cancer. On the other hand, hyponatremia with elevated serum osmolality (hypertonic hyponatremia) is not common, and as such, clinicians are less familiar with this clinical scenario. Clinicians are even less familiar with the use of calculated osmolality a

Performance ramifications of abnormal functional connectivity of ventral posterior lateral thalamus with cerebellum in abstinent individuals with Alcohol Use Disorder.

The extant literature supports the involvement of the thalamus in the cognitive and motor impairment associated with chronic alcohol consumption, but clear structure/function relationships remain elusive. Alcohol effects on specific nuclei rather than the entire thalamus may provide the basis for differential cognitive and motor decline in Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). This functional MRI (fMRI) study was conducted in 23 abstinent individuals with AUD and 27 healthy controls to test the hypothesis that functional connectivity between anterior thalamus and hippocampus would be compromised in thos

Gambling and Attachment: The Mediating Role of Alexithymia in Adolescents and Young Adults.

Attachment and alexithymia play a central role in the appearance and persistence of pathological gambling and related comorbid addictive behaviours among adolescents and young adults. The aim of the present study was to explore the differences between problem gamblers and non-problem gamblers in gambling severity, spending, video gaming, alcohol and drugs use, attachment, and alexithymia, as well as the interaction among these variables. The study sample included 560 participants non-problem gamblers (mean age = 15.49 years) and 54 problem gamblers (mean age = 16.43 years). Gambling disorder (

Genetic and environmental contributions to psychopathological symptoms in adulthood: Clarifying the role of individual and parental risk factors.

Psychopathology-related suicide attempts and deaths are increasing, and the research focus remains on mental disorder in childhood and adolescence. We examined the genetic and environmental contributions to internalizing, externalizing, and general psychopathological distress to clarify the role of individual/parental risk factors for suicide in young adults. Data from 1206 young adults were obtained from a publicly available dataset from the Human Connectome Project. Heritability estimates were analyzed by twin modelling using OpenMx and data from a subsample of 402 monozygotic and dizygotic

A meta-analysis of the efficacy of gabapentin for treating alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Studies of the efficacy of gabapentin for treating alcohol use disorder (AUD) have yielded mixed findings. The aims of our study were to estimate gabapentin's effects on six alcohol-related outcomes, test potential moderators, examine publication bias and evaluate the quality of the studies. METHODS: Meta-analysis of placebo-controlled randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Using PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov, we selected RCTs of gabapentin's effects on alcohol consumption or a biochemical correlate of it, excluding studies limited to other primary outcomes or that combined

Heritability of event-related brain potentials in families with a history of alcoholism.

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) are altered in patients with a variety of psychiatric disorders and may represent quantitative correlates of disease liability that are more amenable to genetic analysis than disease status itself. Estimates of heritability are presented for amplitude and latency of the N1 and P3 components of the ERP measured at 19 scalp locations in response to visual and auditory stimuli for 604 individuals in 100 pedigrees ascertained as part of the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism. Significant heritabilities were found for visual P3 amplitude in respo
