Prenatal alcohol exposure alters the patterns of facial asymmetry.

Directional asymmetry, the systematic differences between the left and right body sides, is widespread in human populations. Changes in directional asymmetry are associated with various disorders that affect craniofacial development. Because facial dysmorphology is a key criterion for diagnosing fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), the question arises whether in utero alcohol exposure alters directional asymmetry in the face. Data on the relative position of 17 morphologic landmarks were obtained from facial scans of children who were classified as either FAS or control. Shape data obtained from the

An explanation for enhanced perceptions of attractiveness after alcohol consumption.

Acute alcohol consumption increases ratings of attractiveness to faces. This may help to explain increased frequencies of sexual encounters during periods of alcohol intoxication. At least in part, such increased attraction may be the result of alcohol consumption decreasing ability to detect bilateral asymmetry, presumably because of the reductions in the levels of visual function. We tested the hypotheses that acute alcohol consumption decreases ability to detect asymmetry in faces and reduces preference for symmetrical faces over asymmetrical faces. Twenty images of a pair of faces and then

Validity of suspected alcohol and drug violations in aviation employees.

AIMS: In the United States, transportation employees who are suspected of using alcohol and drugs are subject to reasonable-cause testing. This study aims to assess the validity of suspected alcohol and drug violations in aviation employees. METHODS: Using reasonable-cause testing and random testing data from the Federal Aviation Administration for the years 1995-2005, we calculated the positive predictive value (PPV) and positive likelihood ratio (LR+) of suspected alcohol and drug violations. The true status of violations was based on testing results, with an alcohol violation being defined

The enhanced alcohol-sensing response of ultrathin WO3 nanoplates.

Chemical sensors based on semiconducting metal oxide nanocrystals are of academic and practical significance in industrial processing and environment-related applications. Novel alcohol response sensors using two-dimensional WO(3) nanoplates as active elements have been investigated in this paper. Single-crystalline WO(3) nanoplates were synthesized through a topochemical approach on the basis of intercalation chemistry (Chen et al 2008 Small 4 1813). The as-obtained WO(3) nanoplate pastes were coated on the surface of an Al(2)O(3) ceramic microtube with four Pt electrodes to measure their alc

Gout and risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between gout and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS: The study subjects were participants in a health-screening programme at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital from 2000 to 2006. Subjects were classified into eight groups based on serum urate (SU) level and gout status (≤ 4.9, 5.0-6.9, 7.0-8.9, and ≥ 9.0 mg/dL, without and with gout). The association between gout and NAFLD was assessed by multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: Among a total of 54 325 subjects, 1930 (3.6%) had gout and 6169 (11.3%) had NAFLD. The prevalence of NAFLD was sig

Alcohol-induced acute pancreatitis: the 'critical mass' concept.

The association of alcohol consumption and acute pancreatitis (AP) has been well documented. Extensive research in the field of alcohol-induced AP has allowed scientists to understand the different aspects by which ethanol may alter pancreatic cellular function. However, despite the recognition and understanding of these proposed mechanisms, the basic question that remains unanswered is that although alcohol is consumed the world over, why is it that only some people develop AP? Epidemiologic data indicates a higher frequency of alcohol-induced AP in geographical locations where surrogate/home

[A case of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy with alcoholic liver dysfunction].

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is caused by opportunistic infection by JC virus and presents with progressive demyelinating lesions in the central nervous system. A 59-year-old man with a history of alcoholic liver dysfunction presented with progressive weakness of his left leg over a period of one month. MRI showed multiple white matter lesions that were of low intensity on the T1 image and high intensity on the T2 image, heterogeneously high intensity on the diffusion image, and were not enhanced with contrast media. The patient underwent open biopsy of the right parietal l

[Prolonged fever and jaundice in a patient with alcoholic liver disease].

We report the case of a 40-year-old man with underlying alcoholic liver disease who presented with prolonged fever, jaundice and liver failure associated with Coxiella burnetii infection. After diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic treatment, the patient made a complete recovery. We describe aspects of this case and provide a practical review of the literature on the topic. We also discuss the importance of this infection and the need for its inclusion in the differential diagnosis of this clinical picture.

Rivastigmine reduces tobacco craving in alcohol-dependent smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Although alcohol-dependent smokers represent an important group for applying smoking interventions, a sufficient pharmacotherapy has not been established in this high-risk group so far. METHODS: In order to examine the effect of the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor rivastigmine on tobacco dependence, we performed a 12-week, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. 26 alcohol-dependent smokers were randomized to rivastigmine 6 mg/day (n=14) or placebo (n=12). Assessments on addictive behavior included carbon monoxide (CO), severity of tobacco dependence (FTND), daily smoked cigarettes

Dental care and oral disease in alcohol-dependent persons.

Dental/Oral health of alcohol-dependent persons and substance abusers is often neglected. It is not clear that alcohol dependence has effects on oral health beyond those expected in nonalcoholic persons of similar socioeconomic status (SES). Study objectives were to examine the personal dental care habits, ability to access professional dental care, and the types of services received and to examine their effect on the oral health of alcohol-dependent persons and substance abusers. Endogenous opioids and addiction to alcohol and other drugs of abuse.

There is significant experimental evidence implicating the endogenous opioid system (opioid peptides and opioid receptors) with the processes of reward and reinforcement. Indeed, many behaviors associated with reward and reinforcement, for example feeding behavior, are controlled by distinct components of the endogenous opioid system located in relevant brain regions. It has also been shown that regardless of their initial site of action many drugs of abuse, such as morphine, nicotine, cocaine, alcohol and amphetamines, induce an increase in the extracellular concentration of dopamine in the n

Alcohol-induced changes in the brain as assessed by MRI and CT.

This review provides an overview of structural magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography findings of direct and indirect alcohol-related toxic effects on the brain. In addition to ethanol-related changes to the brain, this article will also describe imaging findings in the acute setting of methanol and ethylene glycol poisoning. Alcohol will lead to brain atrophy, osmotic myelinolysis, Marchiafava-Bignami disease and, especially when related to malnutrition, may also cause Wernicke encephalopathy. Brain atrophy can be reversible if alcohol abuse is stopped. If not treated, Wernicke en

The effect of alcohol and nicotine abuse on gene expression in the brain.

Alcohol intake at levels posing an acute heath risk is common amongst teenagers. Alcohol abuse is the second most common mental disorder worldwide. The incidence of smoking is decreasing in the Western world but increasing in developing countries and is the leading cause of preventable death worldwide. Considering the longstanding history of alcohol and tobacco consumption in human societies, it might be surprising that the molecular mechanisms underlying alcohol and smoking dependence are still incompletely understood. Effective treatments against the risk of relapse are lacking. Drugs of abu

Modulation of impulsivity by topiramate: implications for the treatment of alcohol dependence.

Topiramate (TP), an anticonvulsant drug, has been widely used in the treatment of disorders characterized by impulsivity symptoms, so it goes to reason that it might be useful in addictive disorders. Recently, TP has been used to treat alcohol dependence, but it is still not known whether the effects of TP on alcohol consumption are related with its action on impulsivity. The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate which dimension of behavioral impulsivity is associated with the effects of TP. A 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study of TP for the treatment of alcohol d

Typologies of alcohol dependence. From Jellinek to genetics and beyond.

The goal of typology research is to identify subtypes of alcohol dependent (AD) patients sharing fundamental characteristics and try to match each subtype, with the most precise treatment strategy. This review provides a comprehensive history of the literature on alcohol dependent subtypes starting from the earliest attempt made by Jellinek. The binary models identified most closely with Cloninger and Babor as well as the successively more complex classifications are discussed. Typology classification potentially useful in guiding the treatment of AD patients, especially in the case of the ser
