Logging-related fatalities in the Eastern Black Sea region of Türkiye: a forensic-epidemiological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Logging is widely recognized as one of the most hazardous industries. Despite the prominence of this sector in Türkiye's Eastern Black Sea region, comprehensive forensic investigations of logging-related deaths are limited. METHODS: This retrospective study examined 102 logging-related fatalities identified among 4,878 forensic autopsies performed between 2013 and 2023 by the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University. Demographic, occupational, environmental, seasonal, and medical response characteristics were extracted from autopsy reports and supplemented with information from police and

Neuropathologic Changes of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias: Relevance to Future Prevention.

BACKGROUND: Decedents with late-life dementia are often found at autopsy to have vascular pathology, cortical Lewy bodies, hippocampal sclerosis, and/or TDP-43 encephalopathy alone or with concurrent Alzheimer's disease (AD) lesions. Nonetheless, it is commonly believed that AD neuropathologic changes (NC) are the dominant or exclusive drivers of late-life dementia. OBJECTIVE: Assess associations of end-of-life cognitive impairment with any one or any combination of five distinct NC. Assess impairment prevalence among subjects having natural resistance to each type of NC. METHODS: Brains fro

Postmortem examination of COVID-19 patients reveals diffuse alveolar damage with severe capillary congestion and variegated findings in lungs and other organs suggesting vascular dysfunction.

AIMS: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has rapidly evolved into a sweeping pandemic. Its major manifestation is in the respiratory tract, and the general extent of organ involvement and the microscopic changes in the lungs remain insufficiently characterised. Autopsies are essential to elucidate COVID-19-associated organ alterations. METHODS AND RESULTS: This article reports the autopsy findings of 21 COVID-19 patients hospitalised at the University Hospital Basel and at the Cantonal Hospital Baselland, Switzerland. A

Sex and age interact to determine clinicopathologic differences in Alzheimer's disease.

Women reportedly make up two-thirds of Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia sufferers. Many estimates regarding AD, however, are based on clinical series lacking autopsy confirmation. The Florida Autopsied Multi-Ethnic (FLAME) cohort was queried for AD cases with a total of 1625 identified ranging in age from 53 to 102 years at death. Standard neuropathologic procedures were employed and clinical information was retrospectively collected. Clinicopathologic and genetic data (MAPT and APOE) were stratified by sex. Within the neuropathologically diagnosed AD cohort, the overall number of women and m

A study of spectrum of pulmonary pathology and expression of thyroid transcription factor-1 during neonatal period.

CONTEXT: Neonatal period is the single most hazardous period of life. The major causes of neonatal death are prematurity and respiratory distress syndrome. We report a series of neonatal autopsies in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with special emphasis on pulmonary pathology. The spectrum of pathological changes in the lungs and thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) expression was studied in detail with reference to its spatial distribution. AIMS: This study aims to analyze the causes of neonatal death with special attention to pulmonary pathology along with associated histopathological ch

Neuropathological Comparison of Adult Onset and Juvenile Huntington's Disease with Cerebellar Atrophy: A Report of a Father and Son.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease caused by a trinucleotide (CAG) repeat expansion in huntingtin (HTT) on chromosome 4. Anticipation can cause longer repeat expansions in children of HD patients. Juvenile Huntington's disease (JHD), defined as HD arising before age 20, accounts for 5-10% of HD cases, with cases arising in the first decade accounting for approximately 1%. Clinically, JHD differs from the predominately choreiform adult onset Huntington's disease (AOHD) with variable presentations, including symptoms such as myoclonus, seizur

Prevalence of Submandibular Gland Synucleinopathy in Parkinson's Disease, Dementia with Lewy Bodies and other Lewy Body Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Clinical misdiagnosis, particularly at early disease stages, is a roadblock to finding new therapies for Lewy body disorders. Biopsy of a peripheral site might provide improved diagnostic accuracy. Previously, we reported, from both autopsy and needle biopsy, a high prevalence of submandibular gland synucleinopathy in Parkinson's disease (PD). Here, we report on an extension of these studies to subjects with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and other Lewy body disorders in 228 autopsied subjects from the Arizona Study of Aging and Neurodegenerative Disorders. Characteristics of sudden bath-related death investigated by medical examiners in Tokyo, Japan.

BACKGROUND: Sudden bath-related deaths occur frequently in Japan, particularly among elderly people. However, the precise mechanism of bath-related death remains uncertain, and effective prevention strategies have not been established. METHODS: Cases of bath-related deaths (n = 3289) were selected from all cases handled by the Tokyo Medical Examiner's Office from 2009 to 2011 (N = 41 336). The ages and occurrence dates were examined, and major autopsy findings, including toxicological analysis, were evaluated for the autopsied cases (n = 550). RESULTS: Most cases occurred in individuals olde

[Fatal outcome after postexposure rabies vaccination in a patient with Parkinson's disease].

INTRODUCTION: In Serbia and Montenegro postexposure rabies vaccination is performed using five doses of rabies vaccine with a potency of 2.5 I.U. It is given on 0, 3rd, 7th, 14th and 28th day, combined with human rabies immunoglobulin with the first dose. Modern rabies vaccines produced in cell cultures rarely cause neurologic complications, among which Guillain-Barre syndrome and parkinsonism. CASE REPORT: The authors report a case of a 78-year-old woman with a documented five-year history of Parkinson's disease, who was bitten by a rabid cat. Twelve hours later, when the rabies infection of

Death by overlaying and wedging: a 15-year retrospective study.

Overlaying, the accidental death by smothering caused by a larger individual sleeping on top of an infant, is a cause of death that has been documented for centuries. The hazard of death has been reported to be greater in infants less than 5 months of age but may occur in children up to the age of 2 years. When an adult or older child rolls on top of an infant, mechanical asphyxia results. The face may be pressed into the mattress or into the body of the sleeping adult or older child. The infant's air may be expressed, and he or she is unable to cry due to pressure on the thorax and the inabil

[A proposal of essentials for forensic pathological diagnosis of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)].

There are many sudden unexpected infant death cases which are easily diagnosed as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) both with or without autopsy in Japan. A SIDS diagnosis may provide a cover for accidental or criminal death. SIDS should not be a convenient diagnostic box that shelters the cases of unexpected infant death which lack the necessary antemortem information to make the correct diagnosis. The authors consider that SIDS should be diagnosed according to the direction of the international definition of SIDS, and propose the following essentials for a forensic pathological diagnosis.

[Development of forensic thanatology through the prism of analysis of postmortem protocols collected at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Jagiellonian University].

When assessed based on the analysis of postmortem protocols, the successes of forensic thanatology appear to differ from those that might be assumed using as the foundation a review of publications and textbooks. The greatest achievements date back to as early as the 18th and 19th centuries, when the morphological changes observed in the majority of types of deaths resulting from disease-associated and traumatic causes were described. Within the past 130 years, however, or in other words, in the period when autopsy protocols were written that are today collected in the archives of the Krakow D

Cognitive biases and misdiagnosis of aortic dissection at emergency departments.

BACKGROUND: Aortic dissection (AD) is still a challenging diagnosis with poor prognosis, and its misdiagnosis remains an unresolved problem. Postmortem examination has long been deemed important for understanding the diseases and determining the cause of death. We aim to investigate the concordance between clinical diagnosis and autopsy findings and to identify the most common clinical "red flags" and the cognitive errors involved in the management of AD. METHODS: This retrospective, observational, single-centre study analysed a series of 30 forensic autopsies focusing on the 7 cases of AD. C
