The effects of fetal breathing movements on the utero-fetal-placental circulation.

Important factors which may affect the fetal circulation are the fetal breathing movements (FBMs) and other movements adn the features of fetal circulation. Recent studies have demonstrated that FBMs are a normal phenomenon of intrauterine development and that there are two patterns of FBMs: (1) A predominant pattern of rapid, irregular (in rate and amplitude) episodic movements, with interspersed episodes of apnea that is present more than 50 percent of the time and accounts for more than 90 percent of the breathing activity. Interestingly, periodic sighs are often seen during these FBMs; (2)

Associations between dietary patterns and cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic risk markers in the Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol study.

PURPOSE: Cardiovascular-kidney metabolic syndrome (CKM) represents an increasingly prevalent public health concern. Optimal strategies to prevent CKM-related outcomes are greatly needed. We assessed the association between various dietary patterns and CKM biomarkers in a general population study. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from 8066 adult participants of the Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol (CHRIS) study. Self-reported dietary intake was assessed through the semi-quantitative GA2LEN Food Frequency questionnaire. We derived six established dietary pattern indices, and popu

[18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ([18F]FDG PET) Characterizes Neurodegeneration Levels Across the α-Synucleinopathy Continuum.

BACKGROUND: [18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ([18F]FDG PET) represents an endorsed neurodegeneration biomarker in neuronal α-synucleinopathies. Idiopathic/isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) represents a prodromal stage of such disorders. OBJECTIVES: To assess [18F]FDG PET as a neurodegeneration biomarker, using published brain metabolic disease-related patterns, and a regional-based approach, across the prodromal to overt α-synucleinopathy continuum. METHODS: We included 83 prodromal subjects with iRBD, comprising non-converters (n = 56) and

Risk factors and age-specific monthly patterns of primary spontaneous pneumothorax: a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) is characterized by sudden lung collapse without external injury or underlying lung disease. However, detailed research on its causes and recurrence patterns is lacking, prompting investigating monthly epidemiology and factors influencing recurrence. Therefore, we aimed to assess the monthly trends in PSP occurrence and identify factors contributing to its recurrence, with a focus on teenagers due to the high incidence rates in this population, while also examining risk factors across other age groups. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retr

Personal factors in systemic sclerosis and their coverage by patient-reported outcome measures. A multicentre European qualitative study and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease where thickening of the skin can lead to reduced body function and limitations in activities. Severe forms can also affect and seriously damage inner organs. Patient-centred rehabilitation emphasises considerations of patients' background, experience and behavior which highlights the need to know if patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) include such personal factors. AIM: To identify and describe personal factors in the experiences of functioning and health of persons with SSc and to examine if and to what extent PROMs in SSc r

Cardiovascular and respiratory responses evoked from the posterior cerebellar cortex and fastigial nucleus in the cat.

1. In both anaesthetized and decerebrate cats the cerebellar cortex (lobules VI, VII, VIII, IX and X) and the fastigial nucleus (f.n.) have been stimulated electrically, and chemically, while recording changes in phrenic nerve discharge, heart rate, arterial blood pressure and renal and femoral blood flow. 2. Stimulation of lobules VI, VII, VIII and Xb failed to elicit any cardiovascular or respiratory changes. Activation of lobule IX (the uvula), and in some preparations sub-lobule Xa, evoked cardiovascular and respiratory responses consistently. In the anaesthetized cat, electrical stimulati

The molecular anatomy of mammalian upper lip and primary palate fusion at single cell resolution.

The mammalian lip and primary palate form when coordinated growth and morphogenesis bring the nasal and maxillary processes into contact, and the epithelia co-mingle, remodel and clear from the fusion site to allow mesenchyme continuity. Although several genes required for fusion have been identified, an integrated molecular and cellular description of the overall process is lacking. Here, we employ single cell RNA sequencing of the developing mouse face to identify ectodermal, mesenchymal and endothelial populations associated with patterning and fusion of the facial prominences. Chronic transgenerational vitamin B12 deficiency of severe and moderate magnitudes modulates adiposity-probable underlying mechanisms.

We have demonstrated previously that severe but not moderate vitamin B12 deficiency altered body composition and induced adiposity in female C57BL/6 mice. This study aims to elucidate the effects of chronic transgenerational dietary vitamin B12 restriction on body composition and various biochemical parameters in the F1 generation offspring of our mouse models of severe and moderate vitamin B12 deficiency established earlier. Female weanling C57BL/6 mice received, ad libitum, for 4 weeks a (i) control diet, (ii) vitamin B12-restricted diet with pectin as dietary fiber (severely deficient diet)

Changes in the quality of care during progress from stage 1 to stage 2 of Meaningful Use.

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) canceled Meaningful Use (MU), replacing it with Advancing Care Information, which preserves many MU elements. Therefore, transitioning from MU stage 1 to MU stage 2 has important implications for the new policy, yet the quality of care provided by physicians transitioning from MU1 to MU2 is unknown. METHODS: Retrospective longitudinal evaluation of the quality of care delivered by outpatient physicians at an academic medical center in the transition between MU1 and MU2. RESULTS: Between MU1 and MU2, 4 measures improved: hyperte

Pronephric tubule morphogenesis in zebrafish depends on Mnx mediated repression of irx1b within the intermediate mesoderm.

Mutations in the homeobox transcription factor MNX1 are the major cause of dominantly inherited sacral agenesis. Studies in model organisms revealed conserved mnx gene requirements in neuronal and pancreatic development while Mnx activities that could explain the caudal mesoderm specific agenesis phenotype remain elusive. Here we use the zebrafish pronephros as a simple yet genetically conserved model for kidney formation to uncover a novel role of Mnx factors in nephron morphogenesis. Pronephros formation can formally be divided in four stages, the specification of nephric mesoderm from the i

Epigenetic Control of Skeletal Development by the Histone Methyltransferase Ezh2.

Epigenetic control of gene expression is critical for normal fetal development. However, chromatin-related mechanisms that activate bone-specific programs during osteogenesis have remained underexplored. Therefore, we investigated the expression profiles of a large cohort of epigenetic regulators (>300) during osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal cells derived from the stromal vascular fraction of adipose tissue (AMSCs). Molecular analyses establish that the polycomb group protein EZH2 (enhancer of zeste homolog 2) is down-regulated during osteoblastic differentiation of AMSCs. Chem

Zebrafish foxc1a plays a crucial role in early somitogenesis by restricting the expression of aldh1a2 directly.

Foxc1a is a member of the forkhead transcription factors. It plays an essential role in zebrafish somitogenesis. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying its controlling somitogenesis. To uncover how foxc1a regulates zebrafish somitogenesis, we generated foxc1a knock-out zebrafish using TALEN (transcription activator-like effector nuclease) technology. The foxc1a null embryos exhibited defective somites at early development. Analyses on the expressions of the key genes that control processes of somitogenesis revealed that foxc1a controlled early somitogenesis by regul
