Non-pharmacological Radical Methods for Treating Postpartum Depression Around the Globe: A Narrative Review.

Mental health conditions during pregnancy, especially postpartum depression (PPD), can have profound and long-lasting effects on the individual, impeding her ability to bond with her child and disrupting the family dynamics. Although pharmacological treatments like antidepressants are the mainstay treatment options, several mothers have concerns about their safety and potential side effects, especially breastfeeding mothers. There is an emerging interest in exploring the use of non-pharmacological interventions as an alternative treatment modality for PPD. This review focuses on the effectiven

Sibling sexual abuse: A commentary based on seven studies, seven insights.

Sibling sexual abuse (SSA) is a complex and underexplored issue with profound impacts on individuals, families, and communities. Current research, although developing, is insufficient and fails to capture the many layers and core aspects of SSA. This commentary highlights insights from seven qualitative studies conducted by the author between 2013 and 2020, based on interviews and focus groups with siblings, parents, and professionals. The findings reveal the need for stronger research-practice relationships, an understanding of the subjective experiences of abuse from child and adult survivor

Identification and Assessment of Undiagnosed Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: A Report of Three Cases.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and its associated physical and mental conditions is the most prevalent congenital impairment causing developmental and intellectual disability worldwide. Like alcohol abuse, FASD is typically undiagnosed by primary care providers. And like alcohol abuse, life underwriters and medical directors need to be aware of the signs, symptoms, and behaviors associated with FASD to accurately detect, identify, evaluate and assess the mortality risk. Three cases of suspected undiagnosed FASD that were underwritten for life expectancies in legal matters are discussed

The Prevalence of Sexual Grooming Behaviors in a Large Sample of Clergy.

Following the exposure of child sexual abuse (CSA) within the U.S. Catholic Church, it was postulated that many of these cases went unreported because sexual grooming was involved. The present study examined the prevalence of sexual grooming behaviors of clergy through the lens of the content-validated Sexual Grooming Model (SGM). The study used archival data from a victim survey of 10,667 cases of alleged CSA within the U.S. Catholic Church. Results revealed the accused clergy frequently used tactics in the gaining access and isolation, trust development, and desensitization stages of the SGM

Cognitive and Psychological Outcomes Following Pediatric Cardiac Arrest.

Cardiac arrest is a rare event in children and adolescents. Those who survive may experience a range of outcomes, from good functional recovery to severe and permanent disability. Many children experience long-term cognitive impairment, including deficits in attention, language, memory, and executive functioning. Deficits in adaptive behavior, such as motor functioning, communication, and daily living skills, have also been reported. These children have a wide range of neurological outcomes, with some experiencing specific deficits such as aphasia, apraxia, and sensorimotor deficits. Some chil

Internet Searches for Terms Related to Child Maltreatment During COVID-19: Infodemiology Approach.

We examined internet searches indicative of abusive parental behaviors before and after the World Health Organization's declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic (March 11, 2020) and subsequent lockdown measures in many countries worldwide. Using Google Trends, we inferred search trends between December 28, 2018, and December 27, 2020, for queries consisting of "mother," "father," or "parents" combined with each of the 11 maltreatment-related verbs used in the Conflict Tactics Scales, Parent-Child version. Raw search counts from the Google Trends data were estimated using Comscore. Of all 33 searc

Pediatric Hypertension: Parent Perspectives.

Clinical practice guidelines for diagnosis and management of pediatric hypertension have been available for decades. Yet, most cases of hypertension in children are undiagnosed. Provider and system-based factors, such as the complexity of diagnostic standards, and a failure among physicians to recognize the importance of hypertension in children, play a role in underdiagnosis. It is unclear, however, how patient and family behaviors impact the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric hypertension. We aimed to explore the perspectives of parents whose children have had multiple high blood pressure

Is There a Link Between Childhood Family Violence and Adult Health? Understanding Family Violence Amongst South Asian American Women.

The devastating effects of experiencing violence in childhood has been particularly difficult to assess among South Asians (SA) living in the U.S. due to a lack of race specific data. A cross-sectional quantitative study of 535 SA adult women living in the U.S. was conducted to better understand the relationship between childhood exposure to violence and health behaviors in adulthood. Measures included socio-demographics, exposure to violence as a child via witnessing parental violence, and experience of childhood violence, adult IPV, suicide ideation and attempt, and body esteem and subjectiv

Sexual Abuse of Children With Learning Disabilities.

Although children with a learning disability (LD) are at an increased risk of sexual abuse, it is unclear whether conditions specific to their impairment are associated with sexual assault or if risk derives from other comorbid conditions such as behavioral problems, social skill deficits, or loneliness. Using a national probability study of child maltreatment investigations in the United States ( n = 2,033), we hypothesized that children over the age of 4 with a LD are target congruent to a sexual perpetrator. Seven percent of children were identified as having a LD, and the odds of a sexual

Pulmonary hypertension associated with scurvy and vitamin deficiencies in an autistic child.

Restricted dietary intake is common among children with behavioral issues. Here we report a case of a severely autistic child who presented initially with limp but who soon developed cough, tachypnea, hypoxia, and tachycardia. An echocardiogram revealed evidence of pulmonary hypertension (PH) with severely dilated right ventricle and elevated right-sided pressures. The etiology of his PH was unclear but further laboratory evaluation demonstrated severe nutritional deficiencies, in particular an undetectable ascorbic acid (vitamin C) level as well as deficient levels of thiamine (vitamin B1), p

PTSD symptom cluster profiles of youth who have experienced sexual or physical abuse.

The research examined whether youth (6-17 years old) who were referred for treatment due to sexual, physical, or both types of abuse presented with distinct profiles of PTSD DSM-IV-TR symptom clusters. When examining data for the 749 youth participants, five PTSD symptom cluster profiles were identified with each profile representing approximately 20% of the youth. The five profiles were also differentiated with respect to being referred for physical or sexual abuse, age, parental ratings of internalizing symptoms, and self-reported depression. The youth referred for treatment in the aftermath

Assessment of disgust sensitivity in children with an age-downward version of the Disgust Emotion Scale.

The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Disgust Emotion Scale for Children (DES-C). Principal components analysis of the DES-C data revealed five factors reflecting disgust toward (a) rotting foods, (b) injection and blood, (c) odors, (d) mutilation and death, and (e) animals, which were largely in keeping with the intended subscales. The DES-C showed good reliability, excellent convergent validity (as established by correlations with an alternative self-report index of disgust), fairly good predictive validity (as assessed by correlations with measures of fear/anxiety an

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: flying under the radar.

Alcohol exposure during pregnancy has been shown to result in a spectrum of birth defects known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) that can negatively impact a child's growth, development, cognition, behavior and physical appearance over his or her entire lifespan. FASD is not a diagnostic term, unlike Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), which is the most serious disorder within the spectrum. Despite warnings by the U.S. Surgeon General and others, childbearing age women continue to drink at high levels, even in pregnancy. As there is no cure for an FASD, preventive activities are currently

Social learning, sexual and physical abuse, and adult crime.

This research examines the relationship between childhood physical and sexual abuse and the types of crimes committed by male adult offenders. We use the method of discriminant prediction to determine whether independent and dependent variables are related in ways that theories predict. Our analyses of data from the Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities suggest that offenders model specific behaviors to which they have been exposed. Male offenders who were sexually abused as a child are more likely to commit sexual offenses, particularly sexual offenses against childre

Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis masquerading as migraine: a case report.

Headaches are common during childhood and a common pediatric presentation to emergency departments (EDs). The most common diagnoses for acute headache in the pediatric ED are viral upper respiratory tract infection with fever, sinusitis, and migraine, accounting for 70% to 75% of presentations; serious neurologic diagnoses are rare. Most literature recommends against neuroimaging for uncomplicated headache given the absence of any other signs or symptoms associated with causes of intracranial pathology and the presence of a normal physical examination. Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis (CSVT) is

Candidate genes and the behavioral phenotype in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

There is an overwhelming evidence that children and adults with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) have a characteristic behavioral phenotype. In particular, there is a growing body of evidence that indicates an unequivocal association between 22q11.2DS and schizophrenia, especially in adulthood. Deletion of 22q11.2 is the third highest risk for the development of schizophrenia, with only a greater risk conferred by being the child of two parents with schizophrenia or the monozygotic co-twin of an affected individual. Both linkage and association studies of people with schizophrenia have im

Pediatric trichotillomania: descriptive psychopathology and an open trial of cognitive behavioral therapy.

In study 1, 46 children and adolescents with trichotillomania who sought treatment at 2 specialty outpatient clinics were assessed. Most children reported pulling hair from multiple sites on the body, presented with readily visible alopecia, reported spending 30-60 minutes per day pulling or thinking about pulling, and reported experiencing significant distress about their symptoms. Most were described by their parents as having significant problems in school functioning. Few children met criteria for obsessive-compulsive disorder or tic disorder. Exhibitionism: findings from a Midwestern police contact sample.

This study used a police sample to examine offense characteristics, recidivism rates, and other types of sexual offending among individuals suspected of exhibitionism. The sample consisted of 202 incidents of indecent exposure perpetrated by 106 identified individuals. Demographic information showed that one quarter of the sample had symptoms of a mental illness and one quarter had a history of substance abuse. More than 84% of the sample had other nonsexual criminal charges. Approximately 30% of the perpetrators were charged for more than one exposure incident. Masturbating during the offense
