The needs and experiences of mothers while in prison and post-release: a rapid review and thematic synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Women in prison are a vulnerable group, often with a history of abuse, out-of-home care, mental health problems and unemployment. Many are mothers when they become involved in the criminal justice system and their gender and parenting related needs are often not considered. The aim of this rapid review was to thematically synthesize the existing research on the needs and experiences of mothers while in, and following release from, prison in Australia. METHODS: We conducted a rapid systematic search of electronic databases, search engines, the websites of key agencies, and contacte

DSM 5 and child psychiatric disorders: what is new? What has changed?

The significant changes in DSM 5 as these relate to a number of the child psychiatric disorders are reviewed by several authors in this special issue: In this paper we address some of the changes in the conceptual organisation of DSM 5 and specifically focus on anxiety and related disorders. In the case of child and adolescent psychiatry, the most notable feature is that the chapter on Disorders Usually First Diagnosed in infancy, Childhood or Adolescence has been deleted. Instead, a new chapter in DSM 5 describes Neurodevelopmental Disorders which typically manifest early in development. Furt

The role of felt or enacted criticism in understanding parent's help seeking in acute childhood illness at home: a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: Parents with young children often worry about whether or not to seek medical help for a sick child. Previous research identified parents' anxieties surrounding help seeking from health services but did not explore or explain the underlying psychosocial processes taking place in families at these times. OBJECTIVES: This paper presents findings from a British grounded theory study on family management of acute childhood illness at home, which provide an explanation for parent's helping seeking behaviours. DESIGN: Glaserian grounded theory methodology was used for the study. SETTIN

"Who Were the 'Experts' Here Anyway?": Mothering, Architecture, and Terminal Illness in Oxford, 1978-95.

This paper presents a significant case study in the history of care architecture. It illustrates how the work of care, mothering, and architectural production can be inextricably linked - albeit often invisibly. It builds on the scholarship of Annmarie Adams and Cynthia Hammond, who have each argued that certain groups of women, historically credited only with domestic, medical, or caring skills, also had significant spatial knowledge and influence. Helen House (Oxford, UK, 1982) was the first paediatric hospice in the world. Designed by architect John Bicknell of Bicknell and Hamilton (London

Pregnancy complications, substance abuse, and prenatal care predict birthweight in adolescent mothers.

BACKGROUND: Reduced birthweight is associated with adverse physical and mental health outcomes later in life. Children of adolescent mothers are at higher risk for reduced birthweight. The current study aimed to identify the key risk factors affecting birthweight in a well-characterized sample of adolescent mothers to inform preventive public health efforts. METHODS: Sixty-four adolescent mothers (≤ 21 years of age) provided detailed data on pregnancy, birth and psychosocial risk. Separate regression analyses with (1) birthweight and (2) low birthweight (LBW) as outcomes, and pregnancy compli

Harnessing routinely collected data for the evaluation of early years interventions: insights from a scoping review of evaluation studies.

INTRODUCTION: Routinely collected data (RCD) describes data about individuals that is documented routinely in practice. Evaluation of early years interventions is imperative for improving child health and development, and utilisation of RCD for research could overcome limitations with traditional study designs, such as participant burden, attrition and disappointment bias. A systematic understanding of if (and how) RCD is being used to evaluate early years interventions is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To scope the literature on how RCD is being used to evaluate the effectiveness of early years interv

The Utility of a SMS Text Messaging Platform to Support Children and Families After Cardiac Surgery.

Patients and families require ancillary support from healthcare providers (HCPs) after discharge from cardiac surgery. Digital technology can help provide access to this support. We explored the utility of an short message service (SMS) text messaging platform (WelTel) in our pediatric cardiac surgical program. Patients scheduled for cardiac surgery between January 1 and November 15, 2023 were offered WelTel. Parents or adolescents were enrolled on the platform from pre-surgical to post-surgical visits (approximately 4-6 weeks). Participants received a weekly automated message asking, "How are

Bahir Dar Child Development Cross-Sectional Study, Ethiopia: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Foundational preacademic skills are crucial for academic success and serve as predictors of socioeconomic status, income and access to healthcare. However, there is a gap in our understanding of neurodevelopmental patterns underlying preacademic skills in children across low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). It is essential to identify primary global and regional factors that drive children's neurodevelopment in LMICs. This study aims to characterise the typical development of healthy children and factors that influence child development in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. METHODS
