The prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus and sexually transmitted infections among female sex workers in Shiraz, South of Iran: by respondent-driven sampling.

As a concentrated epidemic, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is spreading rapidly in one or more groups in Iran, but in the general population its prevalence is relatively low. Female sex workers (FSWs) and their partners are at greater risk for HIV infection. To determine the prevalence of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, herpes simplex type 2 and syphilis among FSWs. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 278 FSWs in Shiraz, by using respondent-driven sampling, from June to March 2010. The recruitment chain started with 14 seeds, and FSWs wer

Epidemiology of Reported HIV and Other Sexually Transmitted Infections During the COVID-19 Pandemic, New York City.

Early in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis, a statewide executive order (PAUSE) severely restricted the movement of New Yorkers from 23 March to 7 June 2020. We used New York City surveillance data for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis to describe trends in diagnosis and reporting surrounding PAUSE. During PAUSE, the volume of positive HIV/sexually transmitted infection tests, and diagnoses of HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis declined substantially, reaching a nadir in April before rebounding. Some shifts in characteristics of reported c

[Lymphogranuloma venereum. An old disease in a new dress].

Lymphogranuloma venereum is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, serotypes L1, L2 and L3. The classical clinical manifestation is a painful inguinal lymphadenopathy, resulting without treatment in severe complications. Over the last years, however, the emergence of massive ulcerative proctitis has been observed, especially in men who have sex with men. Because the clinical symptoms are unspecific, Chlamydia trachomatis should actively be looked for. Reliable and rapid molecular tests have now been established to diagnose lymphogranuloma venereum. The therapeutic reco

[Atypical pneumonia].

International epidemiologic surveys show that apart from community acquired "typical" pneumonia the number of cases caused by atypical pathogens are increasing. A number of problems are to be faced while diagnosing and treating the lower respiratory tract infections due to atypical pathogens. The article gives a detailed overview of pneumonia caused by Chlamydia pneumoniae, Chlamydia psittaci, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Coxiella burnetti and Legionella species, and emphasizes that these pathogens should be considered and thought about more in lower respiratory tract infections as appropriate treat

OBJECTIVE: To isolate bacteria, mycoplasma and chlamydia from the urogenital tract, and to determine their antibiotic susceptibility. METHODS: Bacteria, mycoplasma and chlamydia were isolated from the urogenital tract secretion by artifical culture, and their antibiotic susceptibility was detected by disk diffusion. RESULTS: The common microorganisms were S. epidermidis and corynebacberium, and the minority microorganisms were G- bacteria or E. coli. Bacteria were susceptible to amikacin, cephazolin V, rifampin, gentamycin, and docycyclin. CONCLUSION: S. epidermidis and corynebacterium are

Screening for sexually transmitted diseases during preparticipation sports examination of high school adolescents.

In an urban school district, 636 students in grades 9-12 were tested for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae by ligase chain reaction assays using specimens collected for routine urinalyses during sports physical examinations. Chlamydia and gonorrhea prevalences were 2.8% and 0.7% among males, and 6.5% and 2.0% among females, respectively. Among athletes infected with either sexually transmitted disease (STD), 93.1% reported no symptoms, and treatment was documented for 75.9%. Sports physicals offered a unique opportunity to screen and treat adolescents for STDs and to provide STD-

Sexually transmitted infections in U.S. Air Force recruits in basic military training.

This study reports the counts, prevalence, and trends of five common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among U.S. Air Force recruits during 2012-2014. Chlamydia and genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) were the most commonly identified STIs in females, with a prevalence of 4,841.2 and 432.3 per 100,000, respectively. Genital HSV was the most commonly identified STI in males at 133.4 per 100,000. There were 13 cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea co-infection among females and none among males. STI prevalence was lower than in a similarly aged U.S. civilian population.

Contemporary Strategies for Detecting Chlamydial Infection in Women.

Chlamydia trachomatis infections are the most common bacterial cause of sexually transmitted disease in the US. In women, these infections often result in such serious reproductive tract complications as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy, and an infected woman can pass the infection to her newborn during delivery. The pervasiveness of this often asymptomatic disease necessitates that health care providers actively look for C trachomatis infection, especially in young women. The diagnosis of chlamydial infections has historically been difficult, but newer chlamydia

Keratitis in free-ranging koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) on Magnetic Island, Townsville.

Seventy free-ranging koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) from Magnetic Island (Queensland, Australia) underwent an ocular examination, blood collection and serological examination for Chlamydia psittaci antibodies, and an examination of their teeth and genitalia. In 12 koalas long-standing unilateral keratitis was noted and in another 10 animals long-standing bilateral keratitis was observed. All animals were seronegative for Chlamydia psittaci and apart from some nasal discharge and a variety of assorted medical findings there was no sign of chlamydial infection. These ocular findings probably re

[The frequency of chlamydial infection in the children attending pre-school institutions].

The objective of the present study was to estimate the prevalence and specific features of chlamydial infection within an organized group of children of pre-school age. The data concerning the frequency of chlamydial infection of the upper respiratory tract in the children attending pre-school facilities are reported. The species composition of identified Chlamydia depending on the sex of the children is described. It is shown that acute and chronic ENT pathology in the patients presenting with chlamydial infection occurs much more frequently than in the unaffected children. These results were

Variable association between Chlamydophila psittaci infection and ocular adnexal lymphomas: methodological biases or true geographical variations?

Since the first publication in 2004, a large number of reports have raised the question of an association between ocular adnexal lymphoma and Chlamydia psittaci. The results of this scientific debate, however, remain controversial. The primary objective of this paper was therefore to raise important questions concerning the interpretation of the different and heterogeneous data on the association between Chlamydophila psittaci and ocular adnexal lymphoma, namely the impact of the methodology used and the epidemiological variability of seroprevalence of C. psittaci antibodies. This paper also p

[Long lasting conjunctivitis: research of etiological factors].

Forty children with long-lasting or recurrent conjunctivitis were included in this etiological study. It is well known that purulent conjunctivitis is mainly bacterial, with a major source of infection from Chlamydia; recently, however, a greater percentage of viral forms, with the exception of conjunctivitis without secretion, has been reported. The authors focused their attention on the clinical symptoms and on bacteriological studies of the forms of Chlamydia and Mycoplasma conjunctivitis, highlighting their marked sensitivity to antibiotics and the clinical response and recommending the im

Persistent nongonococcal urethritis associated with a minocycline-resistant strain of Ureaplasma urealyticum: a case report.

Culture of urethral specimens from a 21-year-old man with nongonococcal urethritis yielded both Chlamydia trachomatis and a minocycline-resistant strain of Ureaplasma urealyticum. In such situations, the causal agent of the urethritis is frequently considered to be C. trachomatis. However, the etiology of this case was more probably linked to U. urealyticum. This conclusion emerged after observation of the following events: (1) the patient was not cured by a standard course of minocycline, despite the elimination of the chlamydiae; and (2) clinical recovery was achieved by treatment with a dif

Duration of untreated chlamydial genital infection and factors associated with clearance: review of animal studies.

Chlamydia trachomatis is an important cause of sexually transmitted infection that can manifest as acute cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and most commonly, chronic asymptomatic infection. The basis of this wide spectrum of manifestations and the factors that lead to clearance or chronic infection are poorly understood. We reviewed specific literature pertaining to clearance of primary genital tract infections in animal models, including mice, guinea pigs, pigs, sheep, and nonhuman primates. T helper 1 cell responses involved in cell-mediated immunity are key immune parameters that def

Reconceptualizing the chlamydial inclusion as a pathogen-specified parasitic organelle: an expanded role for Inc proteins.

Chlamydia is an obligate intracellular pathogen that develops in the host cell in a vacuole termed the chlamydial inclusion. The prevailing concept of the chlamydial inclusion is of a parasitophorous vacuole. Here, the inclusion is the recipient of one-way host-pathogen interactions thus draining nutrients from the cell and negatively impacting it. While Chlamydia orchestrates some aspects of cell function, recent data indicate host cells remain healthy up until, and even after, chlamydial egress. Thus, while Chlamydia relies on the host cell for necessary metabolites, the overall function of

Perforin is detrimental to controlling [corrected] C. muridarum replication in vitro, but not in vivo.

CD4 T cells are critical for clearing experimental Chlamydia muridarum genital tract infections. Two independent in vitro CD4 T cell mechanisms have been identified for terminating Chlamydia replication in epithelial cells. One mechanism, requiring IFN-γ and T cell-epithelial cell contact, terminates infection by triggering epithelial production of nitric oxide to chlamydiacidal levels; the second is dependent on T cell degranulation. We recently demonstrated that there are two independent in vivo clearance mechanisms singly sufficient for clearing genital tract infections within six weeks; on

AbstractReactive arthritis follows infections of the urogenital or enteric tract with bacteriasuch as Chlamydia, Yersinia, Shigella, Salmonella or Campylobacter. Typically, one knee or ankle are affected for weeks to several months, with up to 20% ofpatients experiencing a chronic course of more than 1 year. The acute arthritis is treated nonspecifically with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatorydrugs (NSAIDs), local measures such as arthrocentesis, cold pads and rest of theaffected joint. If the triggering bacterium can be isolated in Chlamydia-induced urogenital reactive arthritis, the infection sho
