To clarify the potential role of endothelin-1 (ET-1) in the pathogenesis of glaucoma, the endothelin receptors expressed in bovine trabecular meshwork (TM) and ciliary muscle (CM) were identified. TM and CM strips were subjected to ET-1 as well as to specific endothelin receptor antagonists. In both tissues BQ123, a specific ET-A receptor antagonist, substantially inhibited ET-1-induced contraction. BQ788, a specific ET-B receptor antagonist, showed only moderate effects. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To compare the use of cyclocryotherapy and diode laser cyclophotocoagulation for the treatment of uncontrolled intraocular pressure.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy consecutive patients (70 eyes) treated for high, unresponsive intraocular pressure during a 4-year period with cyclocryotherapy (n = 38) or diode laser cyclophotocoagulation (n = 32) with a follow-up period of at least 3 months (mean follow-up = 15.7 months) were compared for intraocular pressure, visual acuity, and complication rate.

In the present study we have examined the effects and mechanisms of endothelin-1 (ET-1) on arachidonic acid (AA) release and prostaglandin (PG) synthesis in human ciliary muscle (HCM) cells. The case notes of new patients attending the oncology clinic at Moorfields Eye Hospital during the first 5 months of 1988 were analysed retrospectively with regard to the origin of the primary referral, the presence of symptoms, the diagnosis and management. Sixty-eight of 94 new patients were diagnosed as having malignant ocular lesions. Of these 68, 47% were first seen and referred by an optician. Half of these patients were asymptomatic at the time of detection.
