Effects of oral Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol combinations on a sustained attention task in rats.

A well-documented side effect of cannabis and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) acute administration is deficits in cognition and attention. Cannabidiol (CBD), a nonintoxicating constituent of cannabis, may modulate THC's impairing effects. A goal of this study was to determine the effects of THC and CBD, alone and in combination, on performance in the rodent Psychomotor Vigilance Test (rPVT), a translational paradigm used to quantify sustained attention. Outcome measures in the rPVT include motor speed, premature responding, and lapses in attention. Sprague Dawley rats were trained to perform the

"Puberty age gap": new method of assessing pubertal timing and its association with mental health problems.

Puberty is linked to mental health problems during adolescence, and in particular, the timing of puberty is thought to be an important risk factor. This study developed a new measure of pubertal timing that was built upon multiple pubertal features and their nonlinear changes over time (i.e., with age), and investigated its association with mental health problems. Using the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) cohort (N ~ 9900, aged 9-13 years), we employed three different models to assess pubertal timing. These models aimed to predict chronological age based on: (i) observed physical

[Tinnitus].

Tinnitus is a highly prevalent symptom and a common reason for seeing an otolaryngologist. Since tinnitus can go hand in hand with hearing loss, the step-by-step clarification of hearing loss is one of the essential ENT examinations for tinnitus sufferers. The anamnesis and medical history are relevant, since a multidimensional interaction with the tinnitus can be important for the treatment, especially in the case of a psychological comorbidity. In the vast majority of patients, no causal factor can be found. In the absence of external stimuli, phantom perceptions of tones or noises are held

Brain atrophy pattern in patients with mild cognitive impairment: MRI study.

We evaluated the accuracy of the quantitative and semiquantitative analysis in detecting regional atrophy patterns and differentiating mild cognitive impairment patients who remain stable (aMCI-S) from patients who develop Alzheimer's disease (aMCI-AD) at clinical follow-up. Baseline magnetic resonance imaging was used for quantitative and semiquantitative analysis using visual rating scales. Visual rating scores were related to gray matter thicknesses or volume measures of some structures belonging to the same brain regions. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to as

Predicting human decision making in psychological tasks with recurrent neural networks.

Unlike traditional time series, the action sequences of human decision making usually involve many cognitive processes such as beliefs, desires, intentions, and theory of mind, i.e., what others are thinking. This makes predicting human decision-making challenging to be treated agnostically to the underlying psychological mechanisms. We propose here to use a recurrent neural network architecture based on long short-term memory networks (LSTM) to predict the time series of the actions taken by human subjects engaged in gaming activity, the first application of such methods in this research doma

Prolactin Reduces Hippocampal Parvalbumin and GABAA Receptor Expression in Female Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Parvalbumin (PV)-positive cells are strategic elements of neuronal networks capable of influencing memory and learning processes. However, it is not known whether pituitary hormones may be related to PV expression in the hippocampus - a part of the limbic system with important functions in learning and memory. OBJECTIVE: Since previous studies indicate that prolactin (PRL) plays a significant role in hippocampal-dependent learning and synaptic plasticity, we hypothesized that a rise in PRL levels can modify PV expression in the hippocampus. METHODS: We employed biochemical, imm

Real and virtual classrooms can trigger the same levels of stuttering severity ratings and anxiety in school-age children and adolescents who stutter.

PURPOSE: Many school-age children and adolescents who stutter experience the fear of public speaking. Treatment implications include the need to address this problem. However, it is not always possible to train repeatedly in front of a real audience. The present study aimed to assess the relevance of using a virtual classroom in clinical practice with school-age children and adolescents who stutter. METHODS: Ten children and adolescents who stutter (aged 9-17 years old) had to speak in three different situations: in front of a real audience, in front of a virtual class and in an empty virtual

Punicalagin effect on total sleep deprivation memory deficit in male Wistar rats.

Sleep deprivation has deteriorating effects on cognitive functions and activation of brain inflammation mechanisms has been reported by some studies following total sleep deprivation. Some studies have reported the health benefits of punicalagin, a main abstract from Punica granatum L., including those for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The antioxidant characteristic of punicalagin and the fact that sleep deprivation accelerates mediators of inflammation led us to further explore the possible neuroprotective role of punicalagin in total sleep deprivation memory impairment in a rat model

Use of waggle dance information in honey bees is linked to gene expression in the antennae, but not in the brain.

Communication is essential for social animals, but deciding how to utilize information provided by conspecifics is a complex process that depends on environmental and intrinsic factors. Honey bees use a unique form of communication, the waggle dance, to inform nestmates about the location of food sources. However, as in many other animals, experienced individuals often ignore this social information and prefer to rely on prior experiences, i.e., private information. The neurosensory factors that drive the decision to use social information are not yet understood. Here we test whether the decis

Conditioning learning in an attentional task relates to age and ventricular expansion in a nonhuman primate (Microcebus murinus).

The grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) is a promising nonhuman primate model for brain ageing and neurodegenerative diseases. Age-related cognitive decline in this model is well described, however, data on possible relations between attention and age, as they are known from humans, are missing. We tested 10 mouse lemurs in a touchscreen-based version of the 5-choice-serial-reaction-time-task (5CSRTT) on visuo-spatial attention: subjects had to interact with a briefly presented stimulus occurring unpredictably in one out of five locations on the touchscreen. Animals were trained to an 80 % p

Neurocognitive Complications after Ventricular Neuroendoscopy: A Systematic Review.

In recent years, neuroendoscopic treatment of hydrocephalus and various ventricular pathologies has become increasingly popular. It is considered by many as the first-choice treatment for the majority of these cases. However, neurocognitive complications following ventricular neuroendoscopic procedures may occur leading mostly to amnesia, which might have a grave effect on the patient's quality of life. Studies assessing neurocognitive complications after ventricular neuroendoscopic procedures are sparse. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review assessing the available literature of neuroco

Effectiveness of nurse-led group CBT for hot flushes and night sweats in women with breast cancer: Results of the MENOS4 randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Troublesome hot flushes and night sweats (HFNS) are experienced by many women after treatment for breast cancer, impacting significantly on sleep and quality of life. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is known to be effective for the alleviation of HFNS. However, it is not known if it can effectively be delivered by specialist nurses. We investigated whether group CBT, delivered by breast care nurses (BCNs), can reduce the impact of HFNS. METHODS: We recruited women with primary breast cancer following primary treatment with seven or more HFNS/week (including 4/10 or above on the

Experimental effects of mindfulness inductions on self-regulation: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Self-regulation is the control of aspects of the self to allow pursuit of long-term goals, and it is proposed as a central pathway through which mindfulness may exert benefits on well-being. However, the effects of a single mindfulness induction on self-regulation are not clear, as there has been no comprehensive review of this evidence. The current review synthesized existing findings relating to the effect of a mindfulness induction delivered in a laboratory setting on measures of self-regulation. Twenty-seven studies were included and grouped according to 3 outcomes: regulation of experimen

Residual vision activation and the brain-eye-vascular triad: Dysregulation, plasticity and restoration in low vision and blindness - a review.

Vision loss due to ocular diseases such as glaucoma, optic neuropathy, macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy, are generally considered an exclusive affair of the retina and/or optic nerve. However, the brain, through multiple indirect influences, has also a major impact on functional visual impairment. Such indirect influences include intracerebral pressure, eye movements, top-down modulation (attention, cognition), and emotionally triggered stress hormone release affecting blood vessel dysregulation. Therefore, vision loss should be viewed as the result of multiple interactions within

Stuttering Thoughts: Negative Self-Referent Thinking Is Less Sensitive to Aversive Outcomes in People with Higher Levels of Depressive Symptoms.

Learning theories of depression have proposed that depressive cognitions, such as negative thoughts with reference to oneself, can develop through a reinforcement learning mechanism. This negative self-reference is considered to be positively reinforced by rewarding experiences such as genuine support from others after negative self-disclosure, and negatively reinforced by avoidance of potential aversive situations. The learning account additionally predicts that negative self-reference would be maintained by an inability to adjust one's behavior when negative self-reference no longer leads to

Learning by observation and learning by doing in Down and Williams syndromes.

New skills may be learned by active experience (experiential learning or learning by doing) or by observation of others' experience (learning by observation). In general, learning by observation reduces the time and the attempts needed to learn complex actions and behaviors. The present research aimed to compare learning by observation and learning by doing in two clinical populations with different etiology of intellectual disability (ID), as individuals with Down syndrome (DS) and individuals with Williams syndrome (WS), with the hypothesis that specific profiles of learning may be found in

Transient inactivation of the anterior cingulate cortex in rats disrupts avoidance of a dynamic object.

Although animals often learn and monitor the spatial properties of relevant moving objects such as conspecifics and predators to properly organize their own spatial behavior, the underlying brain substrate has received little attention and hence remains elusive. Because the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) participates in conflict monitoring and effort-based decision making, and ACC neurons respond to objects in the environment, it may also play a role in the monitoring of moving cues and exerting the appropriate spatial response. We used a robot avoidance task in which a rat had to maintain at

Pediatric robotic rehabilitation: Current knowledge and future trends in treating children with sensorimotor impairments.

BACKGROUND: Robot-aided sensorimotor therapy imposes highly repetitive tasks that can translate to substantial improvement when patients remain cognitively engaged into the clinical procedure, a goal that most children find hard to pursue. Knowing that the child's brain is much more plastic than an adult's, it is reasonable to expect that the clinical gains observed in the adult population during the last two decades would be followed up by even greater gains in children. Nonetheless, and despite the multitude of adult studies, in children we are just getting started: There is scarcity of pedi
