Avoiding the cost of complacency: barriers and solutions to ending the HIV epidemic in Europe.

INTRODUCTION: Despite significant advances in antiretroviral therapy and prevention strategies, Europe remains off track to meet the UNAIDS 2030 targets of ending HIV as a public health threat. This study explores the implications of failing to meet these targets by quantifying the associated costs and identifying pathways to get back on track. METHODS: We adopted a mixed-methods approach across eight European countries. Targeted literature reviews estimated annual and lifetime HIV costs, identified barriers and solutions, and assessed evidence on long-acting injectables (LAIs). Epidemiologic

Compensate at your own risk: heterogeneity in compliance with preventive behaviors through the lens of economic and social preferences.

Preventive behaviors are crucial for controlling the spread of infectious diseases. Until now, most of the literature on the understanding of the willingness to comply with preventive behaviors at the individual level has focused on either one of those behaviors or studied several behaviors but independently. However, preventive behaviors might not be independent of each other’s and the question of the relationship between these various behaviors deserves to be further investigated. The COVID-19 pandemic represents an interesting setting to study compliance with preventive behaviors when sever

Environmental enrichment attenuates chronic stress-induced disruptions in the gut microbiota, intestinal barrier, and brain.

Major depressive disorder is a prevalent mood disorder characterized by affective and cognitive impairment. Alterations in gut microbiota have been implicated in its pathophysiology, as stress-related microbial changes can disrupt intestinal barrier integrity and promote inflammatory activation along the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Although environmental enrichment (EE) has been shown to exert beneficial effects on stress-related behaviors, its influence on gut microbiota under chronic stress conditions remains unclear. Here, we examined the effects of EE on depressive-like behavior, stress-rel

Parental perspectives concerning gluten-free food insecurity in households with children with coeliac disease: take away messages for policy makers.

Coeliac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease resulting in lifelong intolerance to gluten. Treatment of CD is a gluten-free diet (GFD). High gluten-free (GF) food costs contribute to GF-food insecurity (GF-FI) in households with children with CD. The study objective was to describe parental perceptions of the barriers/facilitators of GF-food security (GF-FS) and the health policies parents deem necessary to combat GF-FI. A subset analysis of a cross-sectional study examining household and child socio-demographic, child diet quality and GFD adherence, food environment, and GF-FI in parent-child

Type 3 resistant starch attenuates concanavalin A-induced immune-mediated hepatitis by preserving intestinal barrier integrity and remodeling the gut microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic immune-mediated liver disorder characterized by loss of immune tolerance and progressive hepatocellular injury. Although corticosteroids remain standard therapy, incomplete responses and adverse effects necessitate safer adjunctive strategies. Growing evidence indicates that intestinal barrier disruption and gut microbiota dysbiosis contribute to AIH pathogenesis. Resistant starch (RS), a dietary fiber with immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and microbiota-regulating properties, benefits metabolic liver diseases; however, its effect on ConA

Integrating harm reduction and addiction care in HIV prevention among persons who inject drugs in the United States-a narrative review.

New human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases related to injection drug use (IDU) in the United States increased between 2016 and 2022. The uptake of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is exceedingly low in persons who inject drugs (PWID) despite its efficacy to prevent HIV. There are multilevel barriers in the PrEP care cascade for PWID. We need a combination of effective HIV prevention strategies, including PrEP, treatment for substance use disorder, and syringe services programs (SSP) to reverse the trend. A major challenge is the lack of knowledge and skills in harm reduction practices and addi

Regulatory effect of Chinese Baijiu on gut microbiota and host metabolism.

Host metabolism and integrity of intestinal barrier function are critical for the progression of liver disease. However, their relationship in alcoholic liver disease (ALD) remains largely unknown. Chinese Baijiu, a traditional Chinese alcoholic beverage, contains a substantial quantity of bioactive compounds in addition to ethanol. This study compares the effect of excessive consumption of Baijiu or ethanol (EtOH) on liver injury in a mouse model, investigates the regulatory role of Baijiu on gut microbiota and host metabolome, and identifies the differential gut microbes and serum and liver
