A combined morphological and genetic survey of helminths in the European green toad Bufotes viridis (Laurenti, 1768) from eastern Slovakia.

Accurate characterization of helminth communities in amphibian hosts is essential for understanding host-parasite dynamics in changing environments. This study presents an integrative parasitological survey of Bufotes viridis populations in eastern Slovakia, using both morphological and molecular methods. A total of 61 road-killed individuals collected across 13 localities were examined for helminth presence. Only nematodes were detected, encompassing 3 families, Rhabdiasidae, Molineidae and Cosmocercidae. Four nematode species were recorded, Rhabdias rubrovenosa, Oswaldocruzia filiformis, O.

Mpox and the Ethics of Outbreak Management: Lessons for Future Public Health Crises.

Mpox, first identified in captive monkeys in 1958 and recognized in humans by 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was historically confined to sporadic zoonotic outbreaks in Central and West Africa. These outbreaks, often driven by rodent-to-human transmission in resource-limited settings, reflect persistent systemic health disparities. In recent years, mpox has also been reported in high-income countries (including the United States, United Kingdom and Europe), underscoring its global health implications beyond traditionally endemic regions. This article examines the mpox outbreak throu

A review of zoonotic chlamydiae species in Africa: assessing their burden and potential impact through One Health perspective.

Chlamydia species, a group of obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacteria, affect humans, livestock, companion animals, and wildlife, with infections ranging from asymptomatic to severe depending on host species and strain. Diagnosis can be difficult due to mild lesions or co-infections. Because Chlamydiaceae infect multiple hosts, a One Health approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health is essential for effective control and prevention. C. trachomatis remains endemic in many regions, while Chlamydia pneumoniae is implicated in community-acquired pneumonia. C. abortus threa

Fungal diversity differences in the indoor dust microbiome from built environments on earth and in space.

Human occupied built environments are no longer confined to Earth. In fact, there have been humans living and working in low-Earth orbit on the International Space Station (ISS) since November 2000. With NASA's Artemis missions and the age of commercial space stations set to begin, more human-occupied spacecraft than ever will be in Earth's orbit and beyond. On Earth and in the ISS, microbes, especially fungi, can be found in dust and grow when unexpected, elevated moisture conditions occur. However, we do not yet know how indoor microbiomes in Earth-based homes and in the ISS differ due to th

Artificial intelligence detection of cognitive impairment in older adults during walking.

INTRODUCTION: To detect early cognitive impairment in community-dwelling older adults, this study explored the viability of artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted linear acceleration and angular velocity analysis during walking. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 879 participants without dementia (female, 60.6%; mean age, 73.5 years) from the 2011 Comprehensive Gerontology Survey. Sensors attached to the pelvis and left ankle recorded the triaxial linear acceleration and angular velocity while the participants walked at a comfortable speed. Cognitive impairment was determined using M

The new Italian SIDAPA Baseline Series for patch testing (2023): an update according to the new regulatory pathway for contact allergens.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common inflammatory skin disease caused by delayed hypersensitivity to chemical and biotic contact allergens. ACD significantly affects the patients' quality of life negatively impacting both occupational and non-occupational settings. Patch testing is the gold standard diagnostic in vivo test to precise the ACD etiology and to correctly perform prevention. According to the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) legislative decree no. 178 of 29th May 1991, allergens are defined as medicines and therefore they are subject to strict regulation. In 2017, AIFA (decr

Novel Wearable System to Recognize Sign Language in Real Time.

The aim of this study is to develop a practical software solution for real-time recognition of sign language words using two arms. This will facilitate communication between hearing-impaired individuals and those who can hear. We are aware of several sign language recognition systems developed using different technologies, including cameras, armbands, and gloves. However, the system we propose in this study stands out for its practicality, utilizing surface electromyography (muscle activity) and inertial measurement unit (motion dynamics) data from both arms. We address the drawbacks of other

"It's just us sitting there for 23 hours like we done something wrong": Isolation, incarceration, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the millions of people incarcerated in United States' prisons and jails during the COVID-19 pandemic, isolation took many forms, including medical isolation for those sick with COVID-19, quarantine for those potentially exposed, and prolonged facility-wide lockdowns. Incarcerated people's lived experience of isolation during the pandemic has largely gone undocumented. Through interviews with 48 incarcerated people and 27 staff at two jails and one prison in geographically diverse locations in the United States, we document the implementation of COVID-19 isolation policies from the perspect

The Role of the Cardiac Surgery Patient in Pain Management: The Patient Perspective.

One and a half million cardiac surgeries are completed worldwide each year where undertreated postoperative pain increases the risk of patient morbidity and mortality. Patient-centered pain management is recommended to improve patient outcomes but there is insufficient information regarding how the patient views their role. The objective of this study is to explore cardiac surgery patients' perspectives on their role in postoperative pain management. This study used an interpretive phenomenological design and convenience sampling. Six participants who had undergone cardiac surgery were recruit

ENIGMA's simple seven: Recommendations to enhance the reproducibility of resting-state fMRI in traumatic brain injury.

Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) provides researchers and clinicians with a powerful tool to examine functional connectivity across large-scale brain networks, with ever-increasing applications to the study of neurological disorders, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI). While rsfMRI holds unparalleled promise in systems neurosciences, its acquisition and analytical methodology across research groups is variable, resulting in a literature that is challenging to integrate and interpret. The focus of this narrative review is to address the primary methodological issue

Target-Triggered Multiple-Polarity-Switchable Multiplexed Photoelectrochemical Platform.

Convenient and accurate quantification of disease-relevant multitargets is essential for community disease screening. However, in the field of photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors for multisubstance detection, research on the continuous detection of multiple targets using a polarity-switching mode is scarce. In this study, a multiplexed PEC bioassay was developed based on a target-triggered "anodic-cathodic-anodic" multiple-polarity-switchable mode. Employing miRNA-21 and miRNA-141 as model analytes, the photosensitive material combinations of Cu2O/gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)/TiO2 and CdS/AuNPs/T

Perspectives of current and future use of electrical stimulation home-devices from people with spinal cord injuries and healthcare professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical stimulation (E-stim) can reduce the impact of complications, like spasticity, bladder dysfunction in people with spinal cord injuries (SCIs), enhancing quality of life and health outcomes. With SCI prevalence high in regional Australia and a shift towards home-based community integrated care, the perspectives of people with SCI and healthcare professionals on current and future use of E-stim home-devices are needed. METHODS: A mixed-methods concurrent triangulation approach was used. A cross-sectional survey collected demographics and perspectives on E-stim technology

Beyond the serotonin deficit hypothesis: communicating a neuroplasticity framework of major depressive disorder.

The serotonin deficit hypothesis explanation for major depressive disorder (MDD) has persisted among clinicians and the general public alike despite insufficient supporting evidence. To combat rising mental health crises and eroding public trust in science and medicine, researchers and clinicians must be able to communicate to patients and the public an updated framework of MDD: one that is (1) accessible to a general audience, (2) accurately integrates current evidence about the efficacy of conventional serotonergic antidepressants with broader and deeper understandings of pathophysiology and

Altered Functional Connectivity of Unimodal Sensory and Multisensory Integration Networks Is Related to Symptom Severity in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Atypical sensory processing is a prevalent feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and constitutes a core diagnostic criterion in DSM-5. However, the neurocognitive underpinnings of atypical unimodal and multimodal sensory processing and their relationships with autism symptoms remain unclear. METHODS: In this study, we examined intrinsic functional connectivity (FC) patterns among 5 unimodal sensory and multisensory integration (MSI) networks in ASD using a large multisite dataset (N = 646) and investigated the relationships between altered FC, atypical sensory processing, soci

Tertiary prevention and treatment of rheumatic heart disease: a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute working group summary.

Although entirely preventable, rheumatic heart disease (RHD), a disease of poverty and social disadvantage resulting in high morbidity and mortality, remains an ever-present burden in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) and rural, remote, marginalised and disenfranchised populations within high-income countries. In late 2021, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute convened a workshop to explore the current state of science, to identify basic science and clinical research priorities to support RHD eradication efforts worldwide. This was done through the inclusion of multidisci

Antibiotics resistance removal from piggery wastewater by an integrated anaerobic-aerobic biofilm reactor: Efficiency and mechanism.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Antibiotic resistance residual in piggery wastewater poses serious threat to environment and human health. Biological treatment process is commonly installed to remove nutrient from piggery wastewater and also effective in removing antibiotics to varying degrees. But the specific pathways and mechanisms involved in the removal of antibiotic resistance are not yet well-understood. An integrated anaerobic-aerobic biofilm reactor (IAOBR) has been demonstrated efficient in removing conventional nutrients. It is here shown that the IAOBR effectively removed 79.0% of Sulfonamides, 55.7% of Tetracycl
