Preventing Medication Errors in Paediatrics: A Narrative Review.

Paediatric medication errors remain a major and preventable cause of patient harm worldwide. Children are particularly vulnerable to medication-related adverse events because of weight-based dosing requirements, age-dependent pharmacokinetics, off-label medication use, communication limitations, and the need for complex drug preparation and administration processes. High-risk settings such as neonatal intensive care units, emergency departments, oncology services, and transitions of care are associated with particularly high rates of prescribing and administration errors. This narrative review

Peer-led recruitment for equitable engagement of people who inject drugs: Evidence from the HEPCO cohort in Montreal, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Engaging people who inject drugs (PWID) in research is challenging due to stigma, distrust, and structural barriers. Peer-led recruitment may enhance reach and equity, yet few studies have quantitatively evaluated its outcomes. METHODS: Between Feb 2021-Dec 2023, a Partnerships Lead with Lived Experience implemented three new recruitment strategies within the HEPCO cohort study of PWID in Montreal, Canada. Strategies extended research activities into the community through a flexible engagement model comprising pop-up research clinics (n = 109 events), street outreach (n = 29 event

Cardiovascular risk reduction through a peer-led digital health lifestyle intervention in a low-income community: outcomes from the MYCardio-PEER program.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Low-income communities face a disproportionately high burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet often lack access to preventive care. Peer-based interventions delivered through digital platforms offer a potentially scalable approach to address these disparities, but evidence remains limited. Our study evaluated the preliminary impact of an 8-week peer-led digital health lifestyle intervention (MYCardio-PEER) in improving knowledge, lifestyle behaviours and biomarkers related to cardiovascular health among a low-income population. METHODS AND RESULTS: Adults from the low

Impact of non-technical skills training on patient outcomes in surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Non-technical skills (NTS) such as teamwork, communication and leadership are essential for surgical safety, but their impact on patient outcomes is uncertain. This systematic review evaluated whether NTS interventions improve operative and patient outcomes in surgical settings. METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, seven databases were searched for randomised and non-randomised studies of NTS interventions reporting patient or operative outcomes. Eligible interventions included team training, simulation, Cr

Nurse Practitioner Roles and Contributions in a Mobile Health Clinic for People Experiencing Homelessness.

AIM: To present a descriptive, practice-based account of a nurse practitioner-led mobile health clinic serving individuals experiencing homelessness, guided by the PRIME-NP framework. BACKGROUND: Homelessness is associated with health inequities and limited access to care. Individuals face barriers including transportation, stigma, and displacement. Although mobile outreach may help address these barriers, little work has examined competencies for nurse practitioners in unstable, resource-limited environments. In this clinic, nurse practitioners provide field-based care, including wound manag

"I liked having my voice heard:" a feasible, rapid approach for codesigning a contraceptive counseling curriculum.

Few youth- and family-engaged codesigned models of medical education programs exist. One area that may benefit from community perspectives is designing education to improve counseling on sensitive topics. The authors' codesigned an adolescent-focused contraceptive counseling continuing medical education training program for practicing primary care clinicians in partnership with community advisory boards and assessed the feasibility and acceptability of their codesign approach. From September 2023 to January 2024, the authors recruited female teens, caregivers, and clinicians residing in North

Microbial diversity, functional genomics and antibiotic resistance in integrated chicken and fish farming systems of Bangladesh.

The integrated chicken and fish farming system in Bangladesh is widely practiced for its resource efficiency, yet its microbial structure, functional potential, and associated antimicrobial resistance risks remain poorly understood. This study investigated microbial communities, metabolic functions, and antimicrobial resistance profiles across multiple components of integrated farming systems, including chicken gut, chicken droppings, feed, fish intestine, and pond sediment. Microbial profiling was performed using 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene sequencing, functional metagenomic pr

Delays in tuberculosis care among the top-ten-tuberculosis-high burden countries in the world: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Delayed diagnosis and treatment can be detrimental not only to patients but also to the community, as such delays can perpetuate TB transmission. This presents a significant challenge in the ongoing efforts to eliminate TB from the community. The primary objectives of this scoping review were to map out research surrounding delays in TB care across the ten countries with the highest TB burden globally and to identify research gaps in this area. METHODS: The guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-Sc

Behavioral telehealth in low-resource primary care settings for anxiety and depression in youth: protocol for a randomized effectiveness-implementation study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and mood disorders in youth are prevalent and impairing, with high current and lifetime comorbidity. Untreated, these disorders lead to sustained functional impairment and increased risk for recurrent disorder and suicide. In addition, there are notable disparities in care, with both families experiencing increased social risk and youth of color significantly less likely to receive mental health services. In previous research, a primary-care-based transdiagnostic brief behavioral therapy (BBT) was developed and found to be effective for a broad population of youths with anx

Late Life Learning, Cognition, and Aging: A Longitudinal study of middle and older-aged adults in Beirut, Lebanon (3LC study).

BACKGROUND: Lebanon is undergoing substantial demographic and social change, with older adults comprising approximately 10% of the population. The Late Life Learning, Cognition, and Aging (3LC) study was established around the University for Seniors (UfS), a long-standing late-life learning program at the American University of Beirut. The cohort was designed to leverage variation in late-life learning exposure by including both UfS participants and community-dwelling adults without prior participation in the program. This provides a unique opportunity to investigate how late-life learning, li

Understanding the Unmet Needs of People with MS at Diagnosis and Throughout Their Care Journey: Insights from a Survey-Based Study.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) has a broad range of symptoms and heterogenous trajectory that requires individualised care. To optimise shared decision-making between healthcare professionals (HCPs) and people with MS (PwMS), it is important to understand communication needs from the patient perspective at diagnosis and throughout their care journey. METHODS: Two multinational online surveys were conducted to explore (1) communication needs around the time of diagnosis, and (2) PwMS empowerment in communicating their specific needs and symptoms. Questionnaires included ten close-ended

Food-residue-level antibiotics promote mucosal colonization of foodborne antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in a simulated human gut.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and food-residue-level antibiotics in food can disrupt gut homeostasis. However, the impact of co-exposure with food-residue-level antibiotics on compartment-specific colonization dynamics and associated risks of ARB in human gut remains unclear. Here, we isolated a ciprofloxacin (CIP)-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain from edible fish parts in aquaculture environment and assessed exposure risks to luminal and mucosal microbiotas using the in vitro Mucosal Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (M-SHIME; ProDigest, Belgium) under three tr

Pre-Referral Antibiotics and Mortality Among Adults With Sepsis in Southeast Asia: A Secondary Analysis of a Prospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Early antibiotics are considered critical for bacterial sepsis treatment, although the benefit of this early timing may differ by the presence of shock. Little evidence exists from low- or middle-income settings. In patients referred from community hospitals to a tertiary center, we tested whether pre-referral antibiotic administration is associated with 28-day survival in sepsis, and whether this association differs by the presence of shock. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study that enrolled patients from 2013 to 2017 with a primary diagnosis of infection made

Loss of a limb: A consequence of traditional bone setting.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Traditional bone setting (TBS) is commonly practiced in many communities worldwide, especially in developing countries in Asia, South America, and Africa, where healthcare resources are less developed. It plays an important role in healthcare delivery systems and remains a widely used alternative to modern medical care for limb fractures. This practice involves using wooden straps and casts to immobilize and stretch the injured limb, often leading to complications such as non-union, malunion, infections, compartment syndrome, and even limb amputations. Supporting unpaid carers around hospital leave for people detained under the Mental Health Act (1983) in England: carer and practitioner perspectives.

BACKGROUND: When an individual is detained in hospital it is important that they maintain contact with their family, friends and communities as these can be helpful for their well-being and recovery. Maintaining these relationships is also important to unpaid carers (family or friends), but they can be strained by carers' instigation of, or compliance with, the involuntary detention. Section 17 of the Mental Health Act (1983) in England and Wales allows for temporary leave from hospital, from an hour in the hospital grounds to going home for a few days. However, carers are not always involved

Patient and physician perspectives on treatments for low-risk prostate cancer: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Patients diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer (PCa) are confronted with a difficult decision regarding whether to undergo definitive treatment or to pursue an active surveillance protocol. This is potentially further complicated by the possibility that patients and physicians may place different value on factors that influence this decision. We conducted a qualitative investigation to better understand patient and physician perceptions of factors influencing treatment decisions for low-risk PCa. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted among 43 racially and ethnically
