A 23-year-old man using Na-Valproic acid (VPA) was admitted to our clinic due to convulsion. The neurological examination revealed right hemiparesis. From the exitus notes, we learned that his two siblings had died from status epilepticus. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), MRI spectroscopy, and diffusion-weighted investigations (DWI) showed acute-subacute ischemic stroke in the left temporo-parieto-occipital region. The patient had an ischemic stroke. Heterozygote methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677C/T polymorphism was determined on genetic examination. The homocysteine (Hcy) level

INTRODUCTION: Paroxysmal dyskinesias are uncommon movements disorders that consist on recurrent brief episodes characterized by attacks with any combination of dystonia, chorea, athetosis or ballismus.
DEVELOPMENT AND CONCLUSIONS: The pathophysiology of paroxysmal dyskinesias is unclear at the present time. An epileptic mechanism and basal ganglia disorders have been proposed although channelopathy due to ion channel mutations have been recently suggested. These disorders were classified by Demirkiran and Jankovic into two main groups: paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia if the attacks were ind

An 83-year-old female, who had a history of anterior myocardial infarction, was treated for Alzheimer's disease with donepezil. She suffered from repeated diarrhea and vomiting, and experienced syncope. She was admitted to our hospital and was diagnosed with acute colitis and syncope. On admission, her heart rate was 54 beats/min with regular rhythm. Laboratory data showed a low plasma potassium level. Electrocardiogram (ECG) showed poor R progression, ST elevation, negative T in precordial leads, and marked QT prolongation. Transthoracic echocardiogram showed the enlargement of the left atriu

We report a case of a brain metastasis of thyroid papillary carcinoma. A 50-year-old man suffered generalized convulsion. MRI showed a mixed intensity mass with a perifocal low intensity rim in T2WI, mimicking cavernous angioma. The patient underwent craniotomy and total removal of the mass. The resected specimen revealed thyroid papillary carcinoma. Further examination showed a mass in his thyroid gland. Other distant metastases were not revealed. This is a case of a solitary brain metastasis of thyroid papillary carcinoma and the patient's initial symptom was caused by brain metastasis. Such

Histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) has been associated with muscle & bone development [1]-[6]. N-terminal MEF2 and RUNX2 binding domains of HDAC4 have been shown to mediate these effects in vitro. A complete gene knockout has been reported to result in premature ossification and associated defects resulting in postnatal lethality [6]. We report a viral insertion mutation that deletes the putative deacetylase domain, while preserving the N-terminal portion of the protein. Western blot and immuno-precipitation analysis confirm expression of truncated HDAC4 containing N-terminal amino acids 1-747. The

In two siblings we found a mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, characterized by developmental delay, hemiplegia, convulsions, asymmetrical brain atrophy, and low cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity in skeletal muscle. The disease locus was identified on chromosome 2 by homozygosity mapping; candidate genes were prioritized for their known or predicted mitochondrial localization and then sequenced in probands and controls. A homozygous nonsense mutation in the KIAA0971 gene segregated with the disease in the proband family. The corresponding protein is known as fas activated serine-threonine kinas

Although posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is caused by various conditions, there have been no reports on PRES associated with bronchial asthma. We report a case with PRES during the treatment for severe asthmatic attack. A 4-year-old girl was treated for asthmatic attack with steroids. From the 10th hospital day, hypertension, pulmonary edema, and cardiomegaly were observed. In spite of treatment with furosemide, she became lethargic and had a generalized convulsion on the 23rd hospital day. CT showed low density areas in the bilateral occipital white matter and MRI on the 2

INTRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT: Angelman syndrome (AS) is characterised by severe mental retardation (MR), the absence of language, ataxia and/or tremors in the extremities and a characteristic behavioural phenotype with a happy behaviour and hyperactivity. Patients often show signs of microcephaly and convulsions. Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is characterised by acute hypotonia and feeding problems in the neonatal period, and triggers an uncontrollable appetite in the infant that leads to obesity. Most patients have some degree of MR, behavioural disorders and hypogonadism. Both pathologies are

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous regression of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) has been reported in skin, bone, and pulmonary lesions. However, such phenomena in the central nervous system (CNS) have not been described previously.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A case of LCH in the CNS with spontaneous regression is reported. A 2-year-old boy presented with general convulsion followed by frequent vomiting and diabetes insipidus. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed numerous multifocal nodules predominantly in the left frontal lobe. The patient underwent surgery to remove part of the frontal lesion. S

A series of aromatic/heterocyclic sulfonamides incorporating adamantyl moieties were prepared by reaction of aromatic/heterocyclic aminosulfonamides with the acyl chlorides derived from adamantyl-1-carboxylic acid and 1-adamantyl-acetic acid. Related derivatives were obtained from the above-mentioned aminosulfonamides with adamantyl isocyanate and adamantyl isothiocyanate, respectively. Some of these derivatives showed good inhibitory potency against two human CA isozymes involved in important physiological processes, CA I, and CA II, of the same order of magnitude as the clinically used drugs

BACKGROUND: Pyridoxine-dependent seizures is an autosomal, recessively inherited inborn error of metabolism with recurrent long-lasting seizures with onset usually in infancy, but also up to three years of age. The seizures are resistant to conventional anticonvulsants. The condition ends fatally if diagnosis and administration of pyridoxine (vitamin B6 ) in pharmacological doses is delayed too long.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A ten-year-old girl who we believe is affected with this condition is presented. A review of the condition based on relevant literature is given.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: The choice of surgical approach to treat medial tentorial meningiomas is crucial and sometimes difficult to make. Although the subtemporal approach is most commonly used for lesions that extend mostly supratentorially, it risks injury to the vein of Labbé or the veins coursing along the subtemporal surface. To avoid venous injury, a medial tentorial meningioma was removed transtentorially through the infratentorial space via the paramedian supracerebellar transtentorial (PSCTT) approach.

Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite, has three modes of transmission: oral intake of raw or undercooked meat or contaminated fruits and vegetables, ingestion of materials contaminated with cat feces, and transplacental infection. The focus of this article is congenital toxoplasmosis, which is transmitted to the fetus across the placenta. When primary infection of the mother occurs during pregnancy, there is a 40 percent chance of fetal infection; rate of transmission and severity of infection are related to gestational age at the time of infection. The brain and retina are often affected, and there

To study the specific features of the epileptic syndrome after present-day gunshot cranial wounds (GCW), as well as risk factors of its occurrence, 56 victims were examined prospectively (within at least a year after their admission). The epileptic syndrome developed in 18 (32.1%) patients within 1 to 15 months following GCW; there were prevalent generalized convulsive (in 13 of the 18 patients) and focal (in 12 of the 18 ones) seizures. One type of seizures was noted in 7 patients, two or three ones were in 11. The polymorphism of seizures and a disparity of their psychopathological structure
