Quantitation of energy expenditure by infrared thermography.

The objective of this study was to adapt infrared thermography (IRT) to measure heat loss in human beings. IRT images were digitized and a mean body surface temperature was computed; heat losses caused by radiation, convection, and evaporation were calculated by using these data. Because subjects were standing during the procedure a small amount of heat was conducted through the feet; this heat was ignored. Total heat loss measured by IRT was not significantly different from values calculated from simultaneous indirect calorimetry (IC) determinations in fasting health subjects and in postsurgi

Child Health Challenges, Ecosystem Mismatches, and the Case for State-Level Policy Innovation.

Policy Points From 2011-2023, US children's health deteriorated across >170 indicators. Chronic conditions rose from 25.8% to 31%, risk of anxiety tripled, and autism and learning disability more than doubled. Policies based on biomedical models have failed to address these trends. Life course models regard health as a developmental process, with mismatches between children's physical, nutritional, and relational environments and the ones they are evolutionarily calibrated to expect as likely drivers of declining health. State policies can help to overcome mismatches and optimize developmental

Clinically Meaningful Use of Mental Health Apps and its Effects on Depression: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: User engagement is key to the effectiveness of digital mental health interventions. Considerable research has examined the clinical outcomes of overall engagement with mental health apps (eg, frequency and duration of app use). However, few studies have examined how specific app use behaviors can drive change in outcomes. Understanding the clinical outcomes of more nuanced app use could inform the design of mental health apps that are more clinically effective to users. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to classify user behaviors in a suite of mental health apps and examine how differen

Neurocognitive consequences of occupational heavy metal exposure among electronic waste sorting workers in Thailand.

Electronic waste sorting workers in Thailand are chronically exposed to heavy metals, including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and nickel (Ni), in informal work settings characterized by limited use of personal protective equipment and suboptimal hygiene practices. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between heavy metal exposure, individual risk factors, and neuropsychological performance among workers. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 76 exposed workers and 49 non-exposed controls. Data were collected using structured interviews, surface wipe sampling of workplace dust for

Barriers, challenges, and facilitators in oral health care for older adults in home-based care: stakeholder perspectives from germany.

BACKGROUND: With the growing number of people requiring long-term care in Germany, not only is the prevalence of chronic diseases increasing, but oral health is also deteriorating. Many older adults with functional impairments who live at home can no longer maintain their oral hygiene independently and therefore rely on caregivers. Consequently, the quality of oral care often depends these caregivers. However, as oral health care in the outpatient setting involves multiple stakeholders - including dentists, dental assistants, general practitioners, professional and family caregivers- the fragm

Meeting 24-hour movement guidelines among Canadian post-secondary students: temporal trends, disparities, and mental health associations.

BACKGROUND: Meeting the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines (24-HMG), comprising aerobic physical activity, sedentary behavior including recreational screen time, and sleep, is critical for post-secondary student health. However, multi-year temporal trends spanning the pandemic and post-pandemic period, as well as sociodemographic and mental health disparities, remain understudied in Canada. This limits the development of targeted interventions. METHODS: We conducted a serial cross-sectional analysis using Canadian Campus Wellbeing Survey data collected between 2019 and 2025. Co-designing embodied extended reality telehealth for veteran mental health: from movement care to whole health.

INTRODUCTION: Veterans in rural and underserved communities face persistent care barriers from provider shortages, travel burdens, and the digital divide. Within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Clinical Resource Hub (CRH) National Telehealth Program delivers primary, mental health, specialty, surgical, and rehabilitative care into veterans' homes and rural clinics, while VA Immersive scales extended reality (XR) across the system. Embodied XR telehealth, where provider and patient meet as full-body avatars in a shared immersive environment, intersects these programs and introduces

Closing the stroke care gap: a collaborative, self-sustainable telemedicine enabled model from rural Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a challenging global public health concern, disproportionately affecting people in rural communities. Stroke care is challenging in low and middle-income countries as it requires a coordinated multidisciplinary approach integrating pre-hospital recognition; acute stroke care, and long-term rehabilitation. Multiple barriers exist in LMICs: lack of community awareness; geographical and financial barriers; poor health systems; absence of standardized care pathways; and inadequate training among primary health care workers. Based on this background, this descriptive implement

Identifying potential barriers and enablers to smoking abstinence after leaving a smokefree prison using the capabilities, opportunities, motivations -behaviour (COM-B) model: a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: Smokefree prison policies reduce smoking-related harms among those living and working in prisons. Helping people released from smokefree prisons to remain abstinent post-release could deliver considerable additional benefits given high rates of relapse and the substantial burden of smoking on health. However, understanding of post-release smoking behaviour and the best ways to support people leaving prison who want to stop smoking for good is limited. No previous studies have explored how access to vapes in smokefree prisons may help or hinder people to remain tobacco-free post-rel

Effectiveness of an online biopsychosocial cognitive-behavioural preventive intervention to improve wellbeing and mental health during pregnancy. Randomized controlled trial (BienGestar).

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a period of significant psychological, physiological, and social change, which can increase vulnerability to emotional distress. While many interventions focus on detecting and treating symptoms of anxiety and depression during pregnancy, fewer target the promotion of wellbeing. The BienGestar study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a digital, biopsychosocial, cognitive-behavioural intervention designed to promote mental health, wellbeing, and physical health during pregnancy and the postpartum period in a community-based sample of healthy pregnant women. Accuracy of recording and reporting of malaria rapid diagnostic tests in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major health concern in Nigeria. Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are widely used in health facilities to confirm malaria before treatment. However, concerns remain about healthcare workers (HCWs) adherence to, and reporting of test results. This study assessed the accuracy of RDT results recorded in health facility registers in two states of Nigeria by comparing them with an unbiased reference standard and explored factors influencing interrater agreement. METHODS: A mixed-method evaluation was conducted in 16 health facilities across Oyo and Sokoto States. RDTs pe

Use of electronic health records to characterize patients with uncontrolled hypertension in two large health system networks.

BACKGROUND: Improving hypertension control is a public health priority. However, consistent identification of uncontrolled hypertension using computable definitions in electronic health records (EHR) across health systems remains uncertain. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we applied two computable definitions to the EHR data to identify patients with controlled and uncontrolled hypertension and to evaluate differences in characteristics, treatment, and clinical outcomes between these patient populations. We included adult patients (≥ 18 years) with hypertension (based on either I

A multicenter study of [-2]pro-prostate specific antigen combined with prostate specific antigen and free prostate specific antigen for prostate cancer detection in the 2.0 to 10.0 ng/ml prostate specific antigen range.

PURPOSE: Prostate specific antigen and free prostate specific antigen have limited specificity to detect clinically significant, curable prostate cancer, leading to unnecessary biopsy, and detection and treatment of some indolent tumors. Specificity to detect clinically significant prostate cancer may be improved by [-2]pro-prostate specific antigen. We evaluated [-2]pro-prostate specific antigen, free prostate specific antigen and prostate specific antigen using the formula, ([-2]pro-prostate specific antigen/free prostate specific antigen × prostate specific antigen(1/2)) to enhance specific

A Narrative Review of Medication Optimisation in Older Adults with Polypharmacy: From Structured Medication Review to AI-Enabled Medication Safety.

CONTEXT: Polypharmacy, commonly defined as the concurrent use of five or more medicines, and excessive polypharmacy, often defined as the use of ten or more medicines, are highly prevalent among older adults with multimorbidity. Although appropriate polypharmacy may be necessary, polypharmacy can be associated with adverse drug reactions, drug-drug interactions, falls, hospitalisation, cognitive impairment, non-adherence, treatment burden and (preventable) harm during transitions of care. METHODS: This narrative review examines medication optimisation in older adults, tracing its evolution fr

Quality control protocol of the National Mental Health Survey-2 of India.

The National Mental Health Survey of India - 2 (NMHS-2), currently underway (2024-26), is one of the largest psychiatric epidemiological studies globally, interviewing more than 250,000 individuals across all 36 states and union territories. Given India's scale and diversity, a rigorous quality control (QC) protocol has been developed to ensure methodological fidelity, data reliability, and operational consistency. Designed through iterative consultations with national and international experts, and approved by the National Technical Advisory Group, the protocol leverages lessons from NMHS-1 a
