Collapse-enhanced SERS effect of self-crosslinked plasmonic starch aerogels for sensitive detection of food contaminants.

A flexible 3D plasmonic starch aerogel substrate was fabricated for susceptible detection of thiabendazole (TBZ) and doxycycline hydrochloride (DH). Based on the unique structure features of starch, an aerogel with high porosity and a large specific surface area was formed without any extra cross-linking agents. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) uniformly distribute throughout starch aerogel and generate dense hot spots while aerogel structure collapses, which leads to significant SERS enhancement. The as-prepared aerogel substrate exhibits good SERS activity with a low detection limit of 1 × 10-1

Association between fluoroquinolones and retinal detachment: insights from a large German health claims-based cohort study.

PURPOSE: Real-world evidence on fluoroquinolone-associated retinal detachment is contradictory. Therefore, we aim to examine the association between newly prescribed fluoroquinolones and the occurrence of retinal detachment with recent data from a large central European country. METHODS: A cohort study with an active comparator new user design was conducted. Dispensings of fluoroquinolone episodes were compared to a group of reference antibiotic episodes (amoxicillin, amoxicillin clavulanic acid, azithromycin, cefuroxime, cephalexin, clindamycin, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, and doxycycline

Synergistic cefiderocol-containing antibiotic combinations active against highly drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii patient isolates with diverse resistance mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii is a nosocomial pathogen known for rapidly developing resistance to nearly all antibiotics, including last-line agents. Cefiderocol, a novel siderophore cephalosporin, has shown in vitro activity against A. baumannii and is now used clinically, but resistance is emerging. Data on cefiderocol-based antibiotic combinations are limited. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the in vitro activity of cefiderocol alone and in combination with other antibiotics against XDR and PDR A. baumannii clinical isolates, and to explore resistance mechanisms underlying cefiderocol synerg

Canine urothelial cell model to study intracellular bacterial community development by uropathogenic Escherichia coli.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections of both dogs and humans, with most caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Recurrent UPEC infections are a major concern in the treatment and management of UTIs in both species. In humans, the ability of UPECs to form intracellular bacterial communities (IBCs) within urothelial cells has been implicated in recurrent UTIs. However, the role of IBCs has not been explored in the pathogenesis of canine recurrent UTIs. In this study, we identified IBCs in both urine and bladder tissue from dogs with UPEC associa

Analytical validation of a novel agglutination immunoassay for the quantification of cystatin B in canine and feline urine.

Urinary cystatin B (uCysB) is a biomarker of kidney injury in dogs and cats. A high-throughput agglutination immunoassay (Idexx Laboratories) was developed for widespread commercial availability of uCysB testing in a reference laboratory setting. We evaluated immunoassay performance and included analyses of precision, accuracy, linearity, interference, analytical specificity, lot-to-lot variation, and stability. CVs from precision studies on the range of 50-500 ng/mL were 0.38-2.53% (canine) and 0.44-3.5% (feline) for within-run precision, and 1.49-5.09% (canine) and 0.65-5.05% (feline) for be

An inducible knock-in mouse model of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva shows spontaneous formation of heterotopic ossification.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an ultra-rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in ACVR1, most commonly the R206H variant. These mutations lead to heterotopic ossification (HO) in soft tissues, such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments. While people with FOP appear healthy at birth, they progressively develop HO starting in childhood, resulting in severe disabilities. Heterotopic ossification can be triggered by injuries, flare-ups, or occur spontaneously, and currently, there are limited medical or surgical treatment options available. To address these challenges, we generated

Unusual presentation of neurobrucellosis presenting with the features of parkinsonism: two case reports and a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis, a zoonotic disease caused by Brucella species, remains endemic in regions such as Saudi Arabia. While neurobrucellosis is a serious complication, its presentation with parkinsonian features and psychiatric manifestations is exceedingly rare, with only five such cases reported in the literature. These case reports add to the limited data on atypical presentations of neurobrucellosis. OBJECTIVE: To describe two cases of neurobrucellosis presenting with Parkinsonism-like symptoms and psychiatric manifestations, highlighting the diagnostic challenges and therapeutic respo

A case report of hemophagocytic syndrome induced by Brucella melitensis biovar 3.

Hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) is also called hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). Hemophagocytic syndrome caused by Brucella infection is a rare and life-threatening complication. We report a case of a 55-year-old female farmer from China, whose symptoms included fever, pancytopenia, and liver damage. Early on, we identified the phenomenon of hemophagocytosis through blood culture and bone marrow examination, thereby confirming the case. The pathogen was precisely identified as Brucella melitensis Biovar 3 using AMOS-PCR technology and a systematic evolutionary analysis of the IS711 seque

Management of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw through the association of surgical treatment with local and systemic adjuvant therapies: a case series with follow-ups of up to 3 years.

The objective of this case series was to report the outcomes of patients diagnosed with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and seek a remission through surgical management associated with local and systemic adjuvant therapies. A total of 14 patients were followed for up to 3 years, of whom one had MRONJ stage 0; three with stage I; seven with stage II; and four with stage III. Twelve patients underwent conservative sequestrectomy. In seven of these cases, the surgery was guided by fluorescence, using doxycycline preoperatively to remove necrotic bone tissue more accurately. In

Missed Until Critical: Unravelling the Mystery of Persistent Hemolysis With a Definitive Diagnosis of Babesiosis.

Babesiosis is a parasitic protozoan infection caused primarily by Babesia microti in the United States. Its presentation can imitate that of malaria, which often leads to misdiagnosis. We present here a case of a 54-year-old female with multiple comorbidities, such as hypertension and hyperlipidemia, who was initially diagnosed with malaria but, with further investigation, was found to have babesiosis. The patient initially presented with anemia and thrombocytopenia, prompting an extensive and meticulous workup including a peripheral blood smear and autoimmune studies. From these tests, we wer

Surgical application of a customised temporary palate guard to treat bleeding palatine ulcers in three cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Three adult cats were successfully treated for severe anaemia caused by a bleeding hard palate ulcer with a temporary palatal guard. Each cat required a blood transfusion and underwent surgical implantation of a customised temporary guard to protect the hard palate mucosa from ongoing irritation. The palatal guards were made from radiographic film in two cases and an acetate sheet in the third. Cats received varied concurrent treatments in conjunction with surgery, including amoxicillin/clavulanate or doxycycline, cyclosporine and prednisolone. Complete resolution of the h

Lyme Carditis: A Reversible Culprit in Non-Ischemic Cardiomyopathy.

Lyme disease (LD), caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, is a tick-borne illness that can lead to Lyme carditis, which most commonly presents as a high-degree atrioventricular (AV) block. While conduction abnormalities are well-documented, LD has also been implicated in non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, though this manifestation remains rare and under-recognized. We present the case of a 57-year-old female with newly diagnosed heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and first-degree AV block, who initially presented with nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Her history

Disseminated Bartonellosis in a Kidney Transplant Recipient Complicated by Infection-associated Glomerulonephritis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Bartonella henselae is the causative agent of cat-scratch disease, which is characterized by self-limited regional lymphadenopathy with fever. However, visceral manifestations are possible, especially in immunocompromised patients. Here, we report a case of bartonellosis in a kidney transplant (KT) recipient complicated by glomerulonephritis (GN) associated with the infection. A 52-year-old male who received a deceased-donor KT a year earlier presented to the emergency department with fever, malaise, and abdominal pain. Maintenance immunosuppression consisted of tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofet
