Predictive value of real-time memory tests in identifying alcohol-induced blackouts in situ.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Memory loss from alcohol use ('blackout') is a prevalent and costly indicator of substance-related harm. While alcohol-induced blackouts can be assessed retrospectively via self-report, no tool exists to identify blackouts objectively in real time, hindering progress in research as well as intervention efforts. This study tested the feasibility and diagnostic accuracy of real-time memory tasks in identifying alcohol-induced blackouts in situ. DESIGN: Prospective diagnostic study. SETTING: United States. PARTICIPANTS: Young adults (18-30 years of age; n = 63) reporting r

Four-Year Effects of a Computer-Based Brief Alcohol Intervention Targeting Alcohol Users in the General Population: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Brief alcohol interventions aim at motivating individuals to reduce their drinking and encompass a multitude of activities with limited duration or frequency such as counseling or individualized feedback. Brief interventions are effective in alcohol users who exceed the low-risk drinking limits. Considering the health risks associated with alcohol consumption below these limits, brief interventions should be targeted at all alcohol users to maximize their public health impact. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed (1) to test the long-term effects of a brief alcohol intervention consisting o

Chinese residents' knowledge about and behavior towards dairy products: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Chinese residents generally had insufficient intake of dairy products. The correct mastery of dairy related knowledge helps to develop a good habit of dairy intake. Dairy intake and purchasing behavior were related to multiple factors. As an attempt to lay a scientific basis for guiding the rational intake of dairy by Chinese residents, we launched a survey to discover Chinese residents' knowledge about dairy product, intake and purchasing behavior of dairy and its influencing factors. METHODS: An online survey was conducted from May to June 2021, and 2500 Chinese residents aged 1

Significant Liver Fibrosis in Pre-Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Alcohol-Relate Liver Disease Population: A Nationally Representative Analysis of Moderate Drinkers With Cardiometabolic Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Metabolic dysfunction-associated alcohol-related liver disease (MetALD), a recently defined entity, represents the combination of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and moderate to heavy alcohol consumption. While these thresholds mark the transition from MASLD to MetALD, the prevalence of significant liver fibrosis in individuals with metabolic dysfunction who consume alcohol below these levels, a "pre-MetALD" population, remains unknown. In this study, we estimated the burden of significant liver fibrosis within this pre-MetALD population using

The Protocol for: Do peers enhance alcohol use outcomes in group motivational interviewing? A translational clinical trial investigating brain synchrony in underage emerging adults during a fMRI hyperscanning task and its association with 12 month alcohol use reductions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Alcohol is the top substance used by US emerging adults under legal drinking age (underage emerging adults; U-EA; ages 18-19). U-EA are unlikely to seek or receive indicated alcohol interventions. It is imperative to find brief, effective interventions to reduce U-EA drinking. Developmental neuroscience reflects that peers hold higher neural salience during adolescence, as evidenced by differential neural response with real and/or simulated peers, even when those peers were not friends, and particularly in the context of alcohol. Peers also activate positive (prosocial) ne

Is the Presence of Pesticides in the Environment a Problem for Everyone? A Comparison of People and Their Environment in the City and Near Crops Fields in the Austral Pampas Region of Argentina.

Although evidence of adverse effects on human health is still scarce, exposure to pesticides has been shown to have a negative impact outside agroecosystems. We compared exposure to current use pesticides in one area surrounded by crop fields (Area 1) with exposure in another area located in the center of a city (Area 2). Both areas are located within one of the world's most agriculturally productive regions. We analyzed the presence of glyphosate and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in urine samples from 86 female volunteers who had been environmentally exposed. Potential geno

[Biological actions of acetaldehyde].

Acetaldehyde (AcH), the first metabolite of ethanol (EtOH), is a chemically reactive and pharmacologically active compound. The author has been engaged in the study of AcH in cooperation with many researchers for three decades. We have found many biological actions of AcH which cause cardiovascular symptoms after drinking and also inhibited EtOH absorption via the canine and rat intestinal tract. This report covers the following five points. 1. The subjects were classified into a non-flushing group and a flushing group, according to the degree of facial flushing after drinking 200 ml of Sake (

Alcohol misuse and negative emotion processing in neurotypical drinkers: Sex differences in behavioral and neural markers.

Negative emotion contributes to problem drinking. Men and women may differ in the mechanisms of negative emotion processing and the pathophysiology of alcohol misuse. However, few have investigated sex differences in the impact of alcohol misuse on negative emotion processing. We addressed this issue in a community sample of 148 drinkers (71 women) evaluated with Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT; men/women 4.4 ± 5.4/4.2 ± 5.6, mean±SD) and functional imaging in a Hariri task. Men and women did not differ in reaction time (RTNeg-Neu) in matching negative vs. neutral images. Linea

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, solitary alcohol and cannabis use, and consequences among young adults.

A substantial proportion of young adults experience alcohol- and cannabis-related consequences. One potential contributor to negative consequences of substance use is context; for example, solitary substance use, which may be more common for those who are experiencing mental health symptoms, such as symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study hypothesized that PTSD symptoms would moderate associations between solitary substance use and consequences for both (a) alcohol and (b) cannabis use. This was secondary data analysis examining young adults across the United States (N = 3

Brief Intervention Versus More Extensive Treatment for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD): Testing the Comparability Hypothesis.

OBJECTIVE: There is a substantial literature indicating that brief interventions (BIs) for alcohol use disorder (AUD) are as effective as more extensive treatments. The research assessment reactivity literature, however, suggests that the protocols used to study AUD treatments can have clinical efficacy, which may account for the observed findings. The purpose of this research was to experimentally investigate the moderation of AUD treatment effects by AUD assessment protocols. METHOD: Participants were recruited from the community via advertisements (e.g., Facebook, mail, flyers). Eligible p

Greater perceived stress and lower self-regulation associated with substance use behaviors in a national sample of United States emergency medical service clinicians.

BACKGROUND: Emergency medical service (EMS) clinicians are first responders who can experience work-related stressors. Substances can be used as a coping strategy to manage stress. The ability to self-regulate motivation, cognition, and emotions may protect against substance use. Our objective was to examine the associations among stress, self-regulation, and substance use in EMS clinicians to identify potential psychological targets for substance use prevention. METHODS: We invited a random sample of 19,000 full-time United States EMS clinicians from the largest national EMS database, of who

Astrocytic responses to binge ethanol in male and female mice: An examination of astrocytic glutamate transporters and density changes in the dorsal hippocampus.

BACKGROUND: Excessive alcohol consumption has been associated with a proinflammatory neuroimmune response and deficits in glutamate transporters. While astrocytes regulate the neuroimmune response and glutamatergic tone, estrogen can promote neuroprotective and neurotrophic effects on astrocytes. However, studies in alcohol use disorders (AUDs) have primarily focused on males, and given the more escalated rate at which females display signs of AUDs compared with males, this study examines sex-based differences in astrocytic responses to ethanol following a nondependent binge drinking paradigm.

Modeling microbiota-mediated risk for alcohol use disorder: a preclinical study of fecal transplantation from ethanol-exposed mice.

Background: Alcohol use during adolescence and early adulthood promotes the development of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Emerging evidence suggests that ethanol-induced gut microbiota alterations may contribute to AUD vulnerability; however, it remains unclear whether microbiota imbalances are a causal risk factor or a consequence of alcohol exposure. Objectives: This preclinical study assessed if fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from donors exposed to ethanol during adolescence/early adulthood would alter ethanol drinking and other behaviors, in unrelated naïve mice. Methods: Forty-two (31

Dose- and sex-related effects of the MAGL inhibitor MCH11 on binge-like ethanol consumption in mice.

The effects of MCH11, a novel monoacylglycerol lipase inhibitor, were evaluated on binge-like ethanol consumption using the drinking-in-the-dark paradigm in male and female C57BL/6J mice. Rodents underwent 4 weeks of binge drinking, and MCH11 (20 and 40 mg kg-1, i.p.) was administered acutely (day 4, DID-3) or repeatedly (days 1-4, DID-4). Quantitative PCR assessed tyrosine hydroxylase (Th) in the ventral tegmental area (VTA); dopamine receptor 2 (Drd2) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and nucleus accumbens (NAc); and mu-opioid receptor (Oprm1), cannabinoid 1 (Cnr1), and cannabinoid 2 (Cnr2) rec

Alcohol and cannabis use and Co-use among U.S. sexual minority young adults: Findings from the 2019-2021 monitoring the future longitudinal panel data.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority (SM; e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual) young adults report elevated substance use, yet few studies examine whether disparities extend to use newly-reported during young adulthood using behaviorally specific measures of daily use and co-use. METHODS: We analyzed Monitoring the Future Longitudinal Panel data (2019-2021; N = 12,173; 14.9% SM). Primary analyses used multivariable logistic regression to estimate incident-use odds during young adulthood among respondents reporting no lifetime alcohol and/or cannabis use at age 18. Outcomes included incident alcohol use, cann

Chronic Pain Acceptance Moderates the Association Between Pain Intensity and Alcohol Use Severity Among Veterans With Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain and hazardous alcohol use are prevalent and commonly co-occur among US veterans. A growing literature highlights pain as a motivator of alcohol consumption, with evidence suggesting more intense pain is associated with an increased likelihood of drinking for pain management. Although chronic pain acceptance (i.e., willingness to experience chronic pain and its sequelae while maintaining engagement in valued life activities) has emerged as a protective factor in the context of opioid-related behavior, its role in shaping pain-alcohol relations has not been examined. Why rat oral cavity tumors should not be the basis of quantitative cancer risk assessment for oral exposure to hexavalent chromium.

Several regulatory agencies have developed threshold-based drinking water guidelines for hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] protective of nonneoplastic and neoplastic lesions in rodents using small intestine tumor data in mice. However, in 2024, the US Environmental Protection Agency Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) set an oral cancer slope factor based on oral cavity tumors in rats following chronic exposure to up to 180 ppm Cr(VI) in drinking water. Herein, we review previously published in vivo mechanistic data in rat oral cavity tissue indicating the absence of mutation responses in ora

Intermittent theta burst to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex promoted decreased alcohol consumption and improved outcomes in those with alcohol use disorder: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Over 60 % of individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) resume hazardous drinking within 6 months post-treatment, necessitating the development of more efficacious interventions. Accumulating evidence suggests transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a promising intervention for AUD. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial assessed the efficacy of intermittent theta burst (iTBS), a form of TMS, as an adjunct treatment for AUD. METHODS: Forty-nine Veterans with AUD (48 males, 1 female) were recruited from residential AUD and substance use disorder treatment. Part
