Respiratory tubes with nasal packings following septorhinoplasty.

The use of packings following septorhinoplasty is a matter of controversy. The recommendations go from gluing with fibrin glue only, if anything at all, over quilting stitches, perhaps in combination with silastic or teflon sheats or plates or these sheats alone, to the employment of various more substantial materials and in from 1 to even 14 days postoperatively. If long-term nasal packing is chosen following consideration of primary healing, patients will experience discomfort of mouth-breathing, but pressure in the ears, too. Therefore, our department has used respiratory tubes simultaneous

The Clinical Role of the Adenoid Microbiome in the Development of Adenoid Hypertrophy and Otitis Media with Effusion.

Background: The adenoid surface serves as a potential bacterial reservoir for upper respiratory tract pathologies, including Adenoid Hypertrophy (AH) and Otitis Media with Effusion (OME). While dysbiosis is implicated in the pathogenesis of these conditions, it remains unclear whether the microbiome of children with otitis media differs significantly from those with simple hypertrophy when compared against a healthy baseline. This study aimed to characterize the adenoid microbiome in children with adenoid hypertrophy with and without middle ear effusion, contrasting them with a healthy control

Finite element analysis of repairing tympanic membrane perforation using autologous graft material and biodegradable bionic cobweb scaffold.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: As for repairing the perforated tympanic membranes (TM), temporalis fascia and tragal cartilage are popular in clinics as autologous graft materials. However, there is a significant hearing loss after repairing the TM with autologous graft materials, which needs to be addressed in biomechanical engineering. METHODS: The finite element model of normal middle ear is improved from two aspects: the repair method of tympanic fibrous layer and the bionic spider web tympanic scaffold. By creating the solid-shell coupling condition and strong coupling boundary condition to s

The Relative and Combined Effects of Noise Exposure and Aging on Auditory Peripheral Neural Deafferentation: A Narrative Review.

Animal studies have shown that noise exposure and aging cause a reduction in the number of synapses between low and medium spontaneous rate auditory nerve fibers and inner hair cells before outer hair cell deterioration. This noise-induced and age-related cochlear synaptopathy (CS) is hypothesized to compromise speech recognition at moderate-to-high suprathreshold levels in humans. This paper evaluates the evidence on the relative and combined effects of noise exposure and aging on CS, in both animals and humans, using histopathological and proxy measures. In animal studies, noise exposure see

Achieving Sustainable Development Goals Through Collaborative Innovation: Evidence from Four European Initiatives.

Cholesteatoma is a progressive and destructive middle ear disease that can lead to severe complications such as hearing loss, bone erosion, and even intracranial infections if left untreated. Accurate preoperative evaluation is crucial for the successful surgical management of this condition. High-Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT) has become the gold standard in evaluation of extent of cholesteatoma due to its ability to reveal anatomical details of the middle ear. This study compares the accuracy of clinical and preoperative HRCT findings with intraoperative observations in patients with

Antibacterial Activity of a Fractionated Pistacia lentiscus Oil Against Pharyngeal and Ear Pathogens, Alone or in Combination With Antibiotics.

Previous studies have clearly demonstrated that the addition of lentisk oil (LO) to streptococcal cultures makes it possible to differentiate Streptococcus spp. into three categories with Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus intermedius sensitive, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Streptococcus mutans partially sensitive, and Streptococcus salivarius insensitive to the product. We have investigated here whether the winterization of LO, an easy and cheap procedure that removes some of the fatty substances contained within, resulted in a better antimicrobial effect on human

Nasopharyngeal cultures in children with AOM - A retrospective study on bacteriological findings and impact on management.

BACKGROUND: Despite a far from perfect correlation with middle ear growth, nasopharyngeal cultures are sometimes used in children with acute otitis media (AOM) in order to have some idea of the causative pathogen. How these cultures are used in clinical practice and to what extent they influence clinical management has not previously been studied. The objective with this study was to investigate in what circumstances nasopharyngeal cultures are performed in children with AOM, what the bacteriological results are and to what extent cultures influence clinical management. METHODS: All nasophary

Effectiveness and Safety of Advanced Audiology-Led Triage in Pediatric Otolaryngology Services.

OBJECTIVES: Expansion of the scopes of practice of allied health practitioners has the potential to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of healthcare, given the identified shortages in medical personnel. Despite numerous examples in other allied health disciplines, this has yet to be applied to pediatric Audiology. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of using audiologists with advanced training to independently triage children referred to otolaryngology (ORL) services, and compare the subsequent use of specialist resources, and postoperative grommet care to a

Stronger efferent suppression of cochlear neural potentials by contralateral acoustic stimulation in awake than in anesthetized chinchilla.

There are two types of sensory cells in the mammalian cochlea, inner hair cells, which make synaptic contact with auditory-nerve afferent fibers, and outer hair cells that are innervated by crossed and uncrossed medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent fibers. Contralateral acoustic stimulation activates the uncrossed efferent MOC fibers reducing cochlear neural responses, thus modifying the input to the central auditory system. The chinchilla, among all studied mammals, displays the lowest percentage of uncrossed MOC fibers raising questions about the strength and frequency distribution of the con

Non-keratinizing undifferentiated carcinoma of the nasopharynx.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is the predominant tumor type arising in the nasopharynx with cervical lymph nodes present in 60-90% of all cases at the time of presentation. The most frequent pathological varieties include squamous cell carcinoma well-differentiated keratinizing, moderately differentiated non-keratinizing and an undifferentiated type. We present a case of non-keratinizing undifferentiated carcinoma of the nasopharynx with parapharyngeal and middle cranial fossa space involvement in an 18-year-old male who has been admitted in our hospital for recurrent right ear otitis media. Current trends in treating hearing loss in elderly people: a review of the technology and treatment options - a mini-review.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), by 2025 there will be approximately 1.2 billion people in the world over the age of 60, which marks a shift in world population to a greater proportion of older people. An estimated 70-80% of adults between 65 and 75 years of age suffer from presbycusis, or age-related, bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (HL) in the high frequencies. Presbycusis is correlated with decreased quality of life (QoL) and depression and according to WHO, is a leading cause of years lived with disability in the adult years. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the

Medial olivocochlear efferent reflex in humans: otoacoustic emission (OAE) measurement issues and the advantages of stimulus frequency OAEs.

Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are useful for studying medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferents, but several unresolved methodological issues cloud the interpretation of the data they produce. Most efferent assays use a "probe stimulus" to produce an OAE and an "elicitor stimulus" to evoke efferent activity and thereby change the OAE. However, little attention has been given to whether the probe stimulus itself elicits efferent activity. In addition, most studies use only contralateral ( re the probe) elicitors and do not include measurements to rule out middle-ear muscle (MEM) contractions. Here we

Clinical interpretations of transient otoacoustic emissions.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to characterize the relation of different ordinal patterns of transient otoacoustic emissions (TEOAES) with respect to underlying otologic disorders and auditory status. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The results of TEOAEs in 225 patients with various auditory disorders were investigated and compared with normative data established from 90 subjects of various ages. TEOAEs were categorized according to four patterns: (1) normal (general response level within 90% of normative data, (2) reduced amplitude (general response level was > or =2 dB peak sound pressure lev

Clade-wide morphological and functional variation of the sauropsid columella.

The columella (=stapes) is the middle ear bone of reptiles that transmits vibrations from the environment to the inner ear. It has been shown to exhibit extensive interspecific morphological disparity in several clades; however, its morphological variation and associated functional consequences remain poorly described. Using published micro-computed tomography data of turtle, lepidosaur, crocodilian, and bird columellae, as well as images of non-avian dinosaur columellae, we provide qualitative and quantitative descriptions, and explore how phylogeny and function influence columellar morpholog
