Modeling and scientific analysis of pediatric medication evaluation based on MDM-DEA-Malmquist model: construction of health management in pediatrics in developing countries.

BACKGROUND: The developing countries represented by China have huge population potential and child population. However, due to economic and social development constraints, pediatrics need help regarding resources and technology. The level of pediatric medical care remains inadequate. METHODS: This article constructs an MDM matrix framework for the pediatric medical nursing level. Combining the lean model theory, the key indicators of children's medical care are analyzed. Thus, it helps medical institutions scientifically evaluate and guide pediatric nursing. Based on the linkage extension of

Feasibility of focused parathyroidectomy in developing countries-a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The mainstay of treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism involves a parathyroidectomy, which depending on the number of affected parathyroid glands and the availability of resources, may involve a bilateral neck exploration with four gland assessment or a minimally invasive, focused parathyroidectomy (FP) necessitating pre-operative localisation. The feasibility of the latter is yet to be demonstrated in developing countries. METHODS: A scoping review was performed with published literature evaluated from the past 15 years (2007 & onwards). Articles were screened and only included

Development and validation of a supported housing programme for homeless women with severe mental illness.

BACKGROUND: The bidirectional phenomenon of homelessness and Mental Illness (MI) creates a vicious circle that is hard to escape. In India, Homeless Women with Severe Mental Illness (HWSMI) often rely on institutional care due to the absence of family or community alternatives, which distances them from socio-economic, cultural, political resources and the right to live with dignity. Hence, there is a need to develop a model that will help reintegrate HWSMI into the community. AIM: We aimed to develop and validate (content and face validity) a supported housing programme (SHP) for HWSMI in Be

Mechanisms of salinity tolerance and their possible application in the breeding of vegetables.

BACKGROUND: In dry and semi-arid areas, salinity is the most serious hazard to agriculture, which can affect plant growth and development adversely. Over-accumulation of Na+ in plant organs can cause an osmotic effect and an imbalance in nutrient uptake. However, its harmful impact can vary depending on genotype, period of exposure to stress, plant development stage, and concentration and content of salt. To overcome the unfavorable effect of salinity, plants have developed two kinds of tolerance strategies based on either minimizing the entrance of salts by the roots or administering their co

Innovations to automate manual ventilation during Covid-19 pandemic and beyond.

Manual ventilation by compressing self-inflating bags is a life-saving option for respiratory support in many resource-limited settings. Previous efforts to automate manual ventilation using mechatronic systems were unsuccessful. The Covid-19 pandemic stimulated re-exploration of automating manual ventilation as an economically viable alternative to address the anticipated shortage of mechanical ventilators. Many devices have been developed and displayed in the lay press and social media platforms. However, most are unsuitable for clinical use for a variety of reasons. These include failure to

Thermosetting Polymers from Lignin Model Compounds and Depolymerized Lignins.

Lignin is the most abundant source of renewable ready-made aromatic chemicals for making sustainable polymers. However, the structural heterogeneity, high polydispersity, limited chemical functionality and solubility of most technical lignins makes them challenging to use in developing new bio-based polymers. Recently, greater focus has been given to developing polymers from low molecular weight lignin-based building blocks such as lignin monomers or lignin-derived bio-oils that can be obtained by chemical depolymerization of lignins. Lignin monomers or bio-oils have additional hydroxyl functi

Evaluation of the utility of the Ponseti method of correction of clubfoot deformity in a developing nation.

Clubfoot is the commonest congenital deformity in babies. More than 100,000 babies are born worldwide each year with congenital clubfoot. Around 80% of the cases occur in developing nations. We treated 154 feet [mean Pirani score (total) 5.57] in 96 children (78 males, 18 females) by the Ponseti method from January 2003 to December 2005. A prospective follow-up for a mean duration of 19.5 months (range 6-32 months) was undertaken. After six months of treatment the Pirani score was reduced to zero for all patients. The results show that corrective surgery, sometimes multiple, can be avoided in

Integrating commercial personal glucose meter with peroxidase-mimic DNAzyme to develop a versatile point-of-care biosensing platform.

The development of point-of-care testing (POCT) methods is highly desirable in molecular detection, as they enable disease diagnosis and biomarker monitoring on-site or at home. Repurposing existing POCT devices to detect diverse biomarkers is an economical way to develop new devices for POCT use. Personal glucose meter (PGM) is one of the most used off-the-shelf POCT devices that has been reused to detect non-glucose targets. However, developing a label-free, user-friendly, and cost-effective general PGM-based sensing platform remains a great challenge, primarily due to the reliance on protei

"It's a fight - the whole personality of the patient to win." The development of concepts of psychosis in the Jewish Hospital in Warsaw, 1898-1943.

This study investigates the development of concepts of psychosis in the Jewish Hospital in Warsaw, within the context of social and historical processes to which the hospital was the subject and a broader scope of European concepts of psychosis. In the years 1898-1909, the first chief physician of the psychiatric ward, Adam Wizel, focused mainly on hysteria. The interest in psychoses was initiated by Maurycy Bornsztajn, who started to promote psychoanalytic ideas. The second decade of the functioning of the Jewish Hospital's psychiatric ward was marked by issues concerning the classification o

Point-of-care real-time DNA detection device for SARS-CoV-2 from clinical samples.

Since the global pandemic of SARS-CoV-2, people's health and the economic support of their countries have been seriously affected. It was necessary to develop a low-cost and faster diagnostic tool that allows the evaluation of symptomatic patients. Point-of-care testing and point-of-need testing systems have been recently developed to solve these drawbacks, providing accurate and rapid diagnostics at field level or at the site of outbreaks. In this work, a bio-photonic device has been developed for the diagnosis of COVID-19. The device is used with an isothermal system (Easy Loop Amplification

Application of the theory of planned behavior with agent-based modeling for sustainable management of vegetative filter strips.

This study proposes an innovative socio-hydrological modeling framework for the development of environmental policies that are tailored to farmers' attitudes and economic interests but also optimize environmental criteria. From a farmers' on-site survey, a behavior model is developed based on a modified Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The dynamics of the social and environmental system is implemented by coupling an agent-based model (ABM) with an agro-hydrological model for vegetative filter strips (VFS). A case study is conducted with farmers from the Larqui river basin, Chile to understand

Vaccination of older adults: Influenza, pneumococcal disease, herpes zoster, COVID-19 and beyond.

Preserving good health in old age is of utmost importance to alleviate societal, economic and health care-related challenges caused by an aging society. The prevalence and severity of many infectious diseases is higher in older adults, and in addition to the acute disease, long-term sequelae, such as exacerbation of underlying chronic disease, onset of frailty or increased long-term care dependency, are frequent. Prevention of infections e.g. by vaccination is therefore an important measure to ensure healthy aging and preserve quality of life. Several vaccines are specifically recommended for

Targeting Oxidatively Induced DNA Damage Response in Cancer: Opportunities for Novel Cancer Therapies.

Cancer is a death cause in economically developed countries that results growing also in developing countries. Improved outcome through targeted interventions faces the scarce selectivity of the therapies and the development of resistance to them that compromise the therapeutic effects. Genomic instability is a typical cancer hallmark due to DNA damage by genetic mutations, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, ionizing radiation, and chemotherapeutic agents. DNA lesions can induce and/or support various diseases, including cancer. The DNA damage response (DDR) is a crucial signaling-transduct

Concise Review: The High Cost of High Tech Medicine: Planning Ahead for Market Access.

Cellular therapies and other regenerative medicines are emerging as potentially transformative additions to modern medicine, but likely at a staggering financial cost. Public health care systems' budgets are already strained by growing and aging populations, and many private insurer's budgets are equally stretched. The current systems that most payers employ to manage their cash flow are not structured to absorb a sudden onslaught of very expensive prescriptions for a large portion of their covered population. Despite this, developers of new regenerative medicines tend to focus on the demands

Vitamin-Derived Nanolipoidal Carriers for Brain Delivery of Dimethyl Fumarate: A Novel Approach with Preclinical Evidence.

Various oral treatment options have been reported for relapsing multiple sclerosis. Recently, dimethyl fumarate (DMF) has been approved for the management of the same. Though effective, DMF is associated with concerns like multiple dosing, patient incompliance, gastrointestinal flushing, lower brain permeation, and economic hurdles. Henceforth, the objective of the present study was to develop vitamin-based solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) for effective brain delivery of DMF with a promise of once-a-day dosing. The developed SLNs were characterized for micromeritics, morphology, entrapment eff

Microbiological food safety: a dilemma of developing societies.

Current food safety issues are deleteriously reshaping the life style of the population in the developing world. Socioeconomic status of the population in poorer economies is one of the major determinants to delineate the availability of safe food to the vulnerable population. Assessment of the prevalence of foodborne illness in developing world is the most neglected area to control disease. Botulism, Shigellosis, Campylobacteriosis, Escherichia coli infection, Staphylococcus aureus infection, Salmonellosis, Listeriosis and Cholerae are extensively prevalent and pose a major threat to human he

Obstetric fistula in low and middle income countries.

Vesicovaginal fistula secondary to obstructed labor continues to be an all-too-common occurrence in underdeveloped nations throughout Africa and Asia. Vesicovaginal fistula remains largely an overlooked problem in developing nations as it affects the most marginalized members of society: young, poor, illiterate women who live in remote areas. The formation of obstetric fistula is a result of complex interactions of social, biologic, and economic influences. The key underlying causes of fistula are the combination of a lack of functional emergency obstetric care, poverty, illiteracy, and low st

Trypanosoma vivax infections: pushing ahead with mouse models for the study of Nagana. I. Parasitological, hematological and pathological parameters.

African trypanosomiasis is a severe parasitic disease that affects both humans and livestock. Several different species may cause animal trypanosomosis and although Trypanosoma vivax (sub-genus Duttonella) is currently responsible for the vast majority of debilitating cases causing great economic hardship in West Africa and South America, little is known about its biology and interaction with its hosts. Relatively speaking, T. vivax has been more than neglected despite an urgent need to develop efficient control strategies. Some pioneering rodent models were developed to circumvent the difficu
