Thirty established fixed flexion deformities of the knee in 18 rheumatoid arthritis patients were studied prospectively to assess the results of 8 weeks of out-patient treatment using the Flowtron intermittent compression stocking. A 44% mean correction of the fixed flexion deformity was obtained from an initial mean of 29 +/- 1 degrees to 16 +/- 1 degrees (P less than 0.001). Percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty has become an accepted technique for use in selected patients with severe, symptomatic mitral stenosis. Recently, a new balloon catheter with an "hourglass" shape and specially designed guidewires and dilators has become available (Inoue balloon). The design of this balloon provides ease of manipulation and self-stabilization across the mitral valve during inflation. Noninvasive automatic 24-h indirect ambulatory monitoring of blood pressure (ABPM) and heart rate has been performed in more than 2000 subjects from 1983-1990 using 12 different devices. According to the requirements of national validation authorities (e.g. AAMI, PTB and BHS) only four devices have passed at least two protocols. Postoperative biliary fistulae are difficult to manage, particularly in the face of obstruction or malignancy. We used endoscopic sphincterotomy or endoprosthesis placement to aide fistula closure in 52 patients with postoperative biliary fistulae. Thirty-seven patients with a fistula were treated with endoscopic sphincterotomy alone. Twenty-four of these 37 patients had a history of lithiasis; 21 patients were treated successfully by endoscopic sphincterotomy alone. The fistula closed in 2.4 +/- 1.6 days. This paper reports the results of a prospective survey of 266 attempted central venous catheterisations by various routes, evaluating their success rate and incidence of immediate complications and attempts to demonstrate a relationship between patient height in centimetres (H) and ideal catheter length. During the period from January to September 1986, 182 Medtronic-Hall (M-H) heart valve prostheses were implanted in 89 patients, mainly because of rheumatic valve disease (68.5%). The patients were divided in two groups. Group I consisted of 83 patients with aortic and mitral valve replacement. Periodontally compromised adult patients may benefit from modified appliance designs for space closure. TMA T-loops of .016" x .022" and .017" x .025" cross sections, with angulations incorporated via concentrated bends and gradual curvature bends are presented. The force systems these appliances produce are measured, and their clinical performances discussed. Templates for these T-loops are presented. By producing lower forces and higher moment to force ratios, this type of T-loop may benefit patients with bony loss.

Results of reconstructive-restorative operations on 40 patients with sequellae of acute hematogenic osteomyelitis of lower extremities are described. Most frequent of them are pathologic dislocations, axial extremity, ankylosis and contractures of large vessels in a faulty position. Extrafocal compression-distraction osteosynthesis after Ilizarov was used. Little-traumatic character of the method, stable fixation and early functional loading gave smooth course of the postoperative period and good anatomo-functional results in most of the patients.
