Attentional effects on affect and prefrontal activation during high-intensity exercise with music.

Music is widely used in exercise as a dissociative strategy to divert attention from sensations of fatigue. During high-intensity exercise, however, physiological perceptions may dominate attention, making it difficult for external stimuli like music to capture focus. Two experiments examined the impact of directing attention to music or body movements while running with asynchronous music. In Experiment 1, a within-subjects 2 (intensity: 70% or 80% heart rate reserve) x 2 (focus: music-focus or body-focus) design was employed. Focusing on music resulted in higher affective valence and remembe

Exercise Improves Atherosclerotic Plaque Stability Through Macrophage Autophagy and the FGF21 Signaling Pathway.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a major driver of acute cardiovascular events, yet the mechanisms by which exercise stabilizes atherosclerotic plaque remain poorly understood. This study investigated the protective effects of a 12-week treadmill exercise training on plaque stability and macrophage autophagy in ApoE-/- mice fed an atherogenic diet. Exercise significantly decreased the serum pro-inflammatory cytokine (tumor necrosis factor-α) and increased the anti-inflammatory (interleukin-10) mediator in AS mice. Histopathology analysis revealed that exercise improved plaque stability through reduced

Exercise modality influences lactate production and RPE: running vs. cycling, intervals vs. continuous.

INTRODUCTION: Lactate has been redefined from a metabolic waste product to a key signaling molecule regulating energy metabolism, gene expression, and disease progression, making the precise regulation of exercise-induced lactate exposure critical for population-specific prescriptions (e.g., for the elderly or cancer patients). The aim of this study was to investigate the coupling between lactate accumulation and subjective fatigue by comparing whole-body (running) versus localized (cycling) exercise, as well as intermittent versus continuous modalities. METHODS: Twelve healthy adults (six ma

Cardiac Adaptations in Endurance Athletes: A Bibliometric Analysis of Exercise‑Induced Physiologic Remodeling.

BACKGROUND: Endurance exercise induces cardiovascular adaptations known as exercise-induced physiologic remodeling of the athlete's heart, including sinus bradycardia, chamber enlargement, enhanced vagal tone, and atrial and ventricular remodeling. These changes are generally physiologic, but concern remains about their association with arrhythmias and long-term outcomes. This study aimed to characterize the research landscape, identify influential contributors, and explore emerging themes in this field. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection d

Validation of Taijiquan (Tai Chi) Exercise Commitment Scale for Chinese Elderly (TECS-CE).

BACKGROUND: Taijiquan, also widely known as Tai Chi, is a traditional Chinese mind-body exercise that has been associated with physical and psychological health benefits among older adults. Despite these benefits, sustained participation may be influenced by psychological commitment and contextual determinants. A population-specific measure is therefore needed to assess commitment to Taijiquan exercise among older adults. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Taijiquan Exercise Commitment Scale for Chinese Elderly (TECS-CE). METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was condu

Exercise-induced adipose tissue ADRB2-PGC1α-FGF21 signaling protects against pathological cardiac hypertrophy.

Exercise induces adipose tissue activation and physiological cardiac hypertrophy, but the link between adipose tissue activation and cardiac remodeling has not been fully established. Here, we found that three weeks of swim training activated brown adipose tissue (BAT) and inguinal white adipose tissue (iWAT) in a PGC1α-dependent manner. Genetic knockout (Adrb2 KO ) or chemical inhibition of the β2-adrenoceptor (ICI118551) suppressed PGC1α expression and BAT and iWAT activation. To test the role of adipose tissue activation in pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy, abdominal aortic con

Strenuous Exercise and Quercetin Supplementation Differentially Alter Lipid Metabolism in C57BL/6J Mice.

OBJECTIVE: While moderate exercise improves lipid profiles, strenuous activity can increase oxidative stress, highlighting the potential role of antioxidants. Quercetin, a polyphenol with both antioxidant and lipid-regulating effects, may counteract exercise-induced oxidative damage and influence cholesterol metabolism. This study investigates whether combining strenuous exercise with quercetin supplementation produces distinct effects on lipoprotein remodeling, offering insights into integrative approaches for reducing cardiovascular disease risk. METHODS: Forty C57BL/6 LDLr+/+ mice were ran

Exploring paths to participation and non-participation in physical exercise among Swedish adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Physical exercise (PE) is important for health. Girls are reported to participate less compared to boys. Multiple factors influence participation and non-participation, including neighborhood, socioeconomic status, social support, and disability. Factors may combine and form paths to participation or non-participation, yet these paths are unknown. To our knowledge, this is the first study to combine cluster analysis with a configurational comparative method to explore paths to participation and non-participation in PE among adolescents. METHODS: Data from 178 Swedish 15-18-year-ol

[TYPICAL COLD URTICARIA EASILY TRIGGERED BY EXERCISE IN A 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL].

Typical cold urticaria is a form of physical urticaria triggered by exposure to cold, which can lead to anaphylaxis, particularly after full immersion in cold water or exposure to cold air. While it is a rare cause of anaphylaxis in Japan, the association between cold urticaria and exercise remains unclear. We report a case of the 13-year-old girl with typical cold urticaria, whose symptoms were easily triggered during exercise. In January X, she experienced recurrent episodes of loss of consciousness, facial swelling, and wheals in her limbs during morning exercise after eating bread for brea

An interactive EMG-EMS system for assisted exercise monitoring: a user-centered evaluation.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) and electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) are increasingly used in rehabilitation and training. However, turning EMG-EMS setups into usable end-to-end interactive experiences remains challenging due to real-time constraints, safety, and user-facing workflow complexity. We investigate an interactive EMG-EMS exercise workflow that supports exercise execution and post-session reflection, and we evaluate it from an interaction-centered perspective focusing on usability, learnability, perceived usefulness, and comfort. The system integrates real-time sEMG visualization

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing in male adolescent patients with thalassemia major after blood transfusion.

BACKGROUND: Thalassemia major (TM) is characterized by anemia, and a synthesis defect occurs in both beta globin genes on the short arm of chromosome 11. Thalassemia patients suffer fatigue, and decreases in VO2max and aerobic exercise capacity are observed. Cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) data are valuable for interpreting the responses of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and locomotor systems to exercise. The main purpose of our study was to reveal the effects of transfusion on respiratory parameters, oxygen uptake, the ventilatory threshold, and maximal exercise capacity in the adolesc

Barriers and facilitators to exercise engagement during lung cancer treatment: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Evidence suggests that exercising through lung cancer (LC) treatment may improve outcomes by modulating the tumor microenvironment and reducing hypoxia. However, recruitment and adherence challenges persist, limiting research progress and real-world implementation. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to explore the barriers and facilitators that influence exercise participation among individuals with LC during cancer treatment. METHODS: This ScR followed the JBI ScR methodology and the PRISMA-ScR checklist, using the participants-concept-context framework to define inclusion and exc

Natural products alleviate exercise-induced fatigue by modulating gut microbiota: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced fatigue critically impairs athletic performance and training quality. The gut microbiota, as a key regulator of the "gut-muscle axis," has emerged as a promising anti-fatigue target. Natural products - owing to their diverse sources, structural complexity, and favorable safety profiles - have attracted growing research interest. However, a systematic synthesis comparing their anti-fatigue effects via gut microbiota modulation across different sources is lacking. SCOPE AND APPROACH: We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and CNKI f

Hepatic Sirt2-PARP1-HMGB1 axis promotes exercise-mediated amelioration of MASH in mice.

Exercise is an effective non-pharmacological strategy for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), but the underlying mechanism needs further investigation. Sirtuin 2 (Sirt2) is a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-dependent deacetylase that is expressed in multiple tissues, including the liver, whose role in MASH is not well defined. In our study, exercise induces hepatic Sirt2 expression through the DNA demethylation on the Sirt2 gene promoter mediated by α-ketoglutaric acid (α-KG)/ten-eleven translocation (TET) enzymes axis. Hepatocyte-specific knockou

Hypohydration Increases Heart Rate Despite Preserved Hemodynamic Compensation During Blood Flow Restricted Exercise.

During blood flow restriction (BFR) exercise, blood becomes sequestered in the active limbs due to impeded venous return, contributing to central hypovolemia. Dehydration also reduces blood volume and can exacerbate the ability of the cardiovascular (CV) system to defend against CV stressors, such as exercise and orthostatic stress. As BFR becomes more widely used, its application in individuals who may be suboptimally hydrated underscores the need to understand how hydration status influences cardiovascular strain. We tested whether hypohydration affects the CV response to BFR exercise and it
