Did the three little pigs frighten the wolf? How deaf readers use lexical and syntactic cues to comprehend sentences.

BACKGROUND: The ways in which students with deafness process syntactic and semantic cues while reading sentences are unclear. While some studies have supported the preference for semantic cues, others have not. AIM: To examine differences in the processing of syntactic versus semantic cues during sentence reading among students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). METHOD: Twenty DHH students (mean age = 12.48 years) and 20 chronologically age-matched students with typical hearing (TH) were asked to read sentences written in Spanish with different grammatical structures and to choose the pi

MRI topography of lesions related to internuclear ophthalmoplegia in patients with multiple sclerosis or ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Internuclear ophthalmoplegia is a dysfunction of conjugate eye movements, caused by lesions affecting the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF). Multiple sclerosis (MS) and ischemic stroke represent the most common pathophysiologies. While magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows for localizing lesions affecting the MLF, comprehensive comparative studies exploring potential different spatial characteristics of lesions affecting the MLF are missing until now. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated MRI examinations of 82 patients (40 patients with MS and 42 patients with

P300-Based Brain-Computer Interface Speller: Usability Evaluation of Three Speller Sizes by Severely Motor-Disabled Patients.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) spellers allow severe motor-disabled patients to communicate using their brain activity without muscular mobility. Different visual configurations of the widely studied P300-based BCI speller had been assessed with healthy and motor-disabled users. However, the speller size (in terms of cm) had only been assessed for healthy subjects. We think that the speller size might be limiting for some severely motor-disabled patients with restricted head and eye movements. The usability of three speller sizes was assessed for seven patients diagnosed with amyotrophic later

Rostro-caudal Connectional Heterogeneity of the Dorsal Part of the Macaque Prefrontal Area 46.

Based on neural tracer injections we found evidence for 3 connectionally distinct sectors of the dorsal part of the macaque prefrontal area 46 (46d), located at different rostro-caudal levels. Specifically, a rostral sector displayed an almost exclusive and extensive intraprefrontal connectivity and extraprefrontal connections limited to superior temporal areas and the caudal cingulate area 31. Conversely, both a middle and a caudal sector were characterized by robust, topographically organized connections with parietal and frontal sensorimotor areas. Both these sectors shared connections with

Lateral intraparietal area (LIP) is largely effector-specific in free-choice decisions.

Despite many years of intense research, there is no strong consensus about the role of the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) in decision making. One view of LIP function is that it guides spatial attention, providing a "saliency map" of the external world. If this were the case, it would contribute to target selection regardless of which action would be performed to implement the choice. On the other hand, LIP inactivation has been shown to influence spatial selection and oculomotor metrics in free-choice decisions, which are made using eye movements, arguing that it contributes to saccade deci

Postural Control in Children with Dyslexia: Effects of Emotional Stimuli in a Dual-Task Environment.

The aim of this study was to compare the visual exploration strategies used during a postural control task across participants with and without dyslexia. We simultaneously recorded eye movements and postural control while children were viewing different types of emotional faces. Twenty-two children with dyslexia and twenty-two aged-matched children without dyslexia participated in the study. We analysed the surface area, the length and the mean velocity of the centre of pressure for balance in parallel with visual saccadic latency, the number of saccades and the time spent in regions of intere

Chronic postoperative fungal endophthalmitis caused by Penicillium citrinum after cataract surgery.

UNLABELLED: An 85-year-old man developed chronic postoperative endophthalmitis after complicated cataract surgery. Visual acuity in the affected eye was hand movements. Slitlamp biomicroscopy showed a hypopyon, superonasal iris nodule, and marked vitritis. An anterior chamber washout, iris biopsy, and intravitreal amphotericin injection were performed. Panfungal polymerase chain reaction of anterior chamber and vitreous samples were positive for Penicillium citrinum. The iris biopsy showed hyphae on Grocott staining. Despite treatment, the patient's acuity deteriorated to light perception and

Nystagmus in patients with unilateral acute otitis media complicated by serous labyrinthitis.

Conclusion The patients with serous labyrinthitis caused by acute otitis media (AOM) exhibited various patterns of nystagmus in which direction-fixed irritative-type nystagmus was the most common pattern. Differential effects on inner ear function by toxic or inflammatory mediators may be responsible for the various manifestation of nystagmus. Objective This study aimed to investigate nystagmus patterns in patients with serous labyrinthitis, and discuss possible mechanisms. Methods From October 2011 to March 2014, 13 consecutive patients with serous labyrinthitis were included. Eye movements o

Vision and vision-related outcome measures in multiple sclerosis.

Visual impairment is a key manifestation of multiple sclerosis. Acute optic neuritis is a common, often presenting manifestation, but visual deficits and structural loss of retinal axonal and neuronal integrity can occur even without a history of optic neuritis. Interest in vision in multiple sclerosis is growing, partially in response to the development of sensitive visual function tests, structural markers such as optical coherence tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, and quality of life measures that give clinical meaning to the structure-function correlations that are unique to the a

Why does saccade execution increase episodic memory retrieval? A test of the top-down attentional control hypothesis.

Making repetitive saccadic eye movements has been found to increase subsequent episodic memory retrieval and also to increase subsequent top-down attentional control. We theorise that these effects are related such that saccade-induced changes in attentional processing facilitate memory retrieval. We tested this idea by examining the effect of saccade execution on retrieval conditions that differed in relative ease of consciously accessing episodic memories. Based on recent theories of episodic retrieval, we reasoned that there is a larger role for top-down attention when memories are more dif

How active perception and attractor dynamics shape perceptual categorization: a computational model.

We propose a computational model of perceptual categorization that fuses elements of grounded and sensorimotor theories of cognition with dynamic models of decision-making. We assume that category information consists in anticipated patterns of agent-environment interactions that can be elicited through overt or covert (simulated) eye movements, object manipulation, etc. This information is firstly encoded when category information is acquired, and then re-enacted during perceptual categorization. The perceptual categorization consists in a dynamic competition between attractors that encode th

The Shepherd's Crook Sign: A New Neuroimaging Pareidolia in Joubert Syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: By pareidolically recognizing specific patterns indicative of particular diseases, neuroimagers reinforce their mnemonic strategies and improve their neuroimaging diagnostic skills. Joubert Syndrome (JS) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized clinically by mental retardation, episodes of abnormal deep and rapid breathing, abnormal eye movements, and ataxia. Many neuroimaging signs characteristic of JS have been reported. METHODS: In retrospective case study, two consanguineous neonates diagnosed with JS were evaluated with brain magnetic resonance imaging (MR

Direction-specific fMRI adaptation reveals the visual cortical network underlying the "Rotating Snakes" illusion.

The "Rotating Snakes" figure elicits a clear sense of anomalous motion in stationary repetitive patterns. We used an event-related fMRI adaptation paradigm to investigate cortical mechanisms underlying the illusory motion. Following an adapting stimulus (S1) and a blank period, a probe stimulus (S2) that elicited illusory motion either in the same or in the opposite direction was presented. Attention was controlled by a fixation task, and control experiments precluded explanations in terms of artefacts of local adaptation, afterimages, or involuntary eye movements. Recorded BOLD responses were

Epilepsy in ring 14 chromosome syndrome.

Ring chromosome 14 [r(14)] is a rare disorder. The aim of this study was to describe two new cases of r(14) drug-resistant epilepsy, and, through an extensive review of literature, highlight those epileptological features which are more commonly found and which may help in early diagnosis, genetic counseling, and treatment. Epilepsy onset in r(14) syndrome takes place during the first year of life; seizures are generalized or focal and less frequently myoclonic. Seizures might be induced by fever. Focal seizures are characterized by staring, eye or head deviation, respiratory arrest, swallowin

Epileptic nystagmus: description of a pediatric case with EEG correlation and SPECT findings.

Epileptic nystagmus (EN) describes repetitive eye movements that result from seizure activity. We describe a patient with EN and vertigo first noted at the age of 4 yr and 10 mo. Brain MRI did not show anomalies. Ictal EEG recordings revealed epileptic activity during three episodes of horizontal, left-beating nystagmus not crossing the midline. Ictal 99mTc-ECD SPECT demonstrated the presence of active foci in multiple cerebral regions including bilateral prefrontal, bilateral parieto-temporo-occipital and the left parieto-insular-vestibular areas. A wide area of hypoperfusion was also evident

Memory-guided saccade processing in visual form agnosia (patient DF).

According to Milner and Goodale's model (The visual brain in action, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2006) areas in the ventral visual stream mediate visual perception and oV-line actions, whilst regions in the dorsal visual stream mediate the on-line visual control of action. Strong evidence for this model comes from a patient (DF), who suffers from visual form agnosia after bilateral damage to the ventro-lateral occipital region, sparing V1. It has been reported that she is normal in immediate reaching and grasping, yet severely impaired when asked to perform delayed actions. Here we invest

An exploration of ocular fixation in Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy.

Since the basal ganglia are thought to have a role in controlling ocular fixation it is expected that patients with parkinsonian conditions would show impaired performance in fixation tasks. Our study examines ocular fixation in patients with a range of parkinsonian conditions (Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease, Multiple System Atrophy and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy). Eye movements were recorded from 44 patients and 50 age matched control subjects during ocular fixation both with and without a visible target. The data for each patient were then characterised in terms of fixation periods and s

Post-streptococcal opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome associated with anti-neuroleukin antibodies.

BACKGROUND: Adult opsoclonus-myoclonus (OM), a disorder of eye movements accompanied by myoclonus affecting the trunk, limbs, or head, is commonly associated with an underlying malignancy or precipitated by viral infection. METHODS: We present the first two reports of post-streptococcal OM associated with antibodies against a 56 kDa protein. Two young girls presented with opsoclonus and myoclonus following a febrile illness and pharyngitis. Protein purification techniques were employed. Amino acid sequences of human neuroleukin (NLK) and streptococcal proteins were compared using the protein-
