BACKGROUND: Meralgia paresthetica is a rarely encountered sensory mononeuropathy characterized by paresthesia, pain or sensory impairment along the distribution of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve caused by entrapment or compression of the nerve as it crosses the anterior superior iliac spine and runs beneath the inguinal ligament.

A high level of suspicion is required when treating patients with a history of esophageal bleeding and portal hypertension. The preoperative workup must be extensive; if the reconstructive surgeon is considering the use of a rectus abdominis muscle transfer, noninvasive studies and an exhaustive physical examination are required. Factors affecting the microcirculation might also influence the patency rates of the venous anastomosis and require further study. When treating these patients, the surgeon must be aware that portal hypertension can exist without clinical evidence.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to validate an experimental model of weakened synthetic mandible loaded in a device simulating masticatory forces by studying the reproducibility of the fracture threshold.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Both sides of five synthetic mandibles were weakened by progressive synthetic bone resection. The synthetic mandibles were submitted, after each resection, to static chewing exercises in the simulator. The threshold fracture was recorded.

A new fasciocutaneous reversed-flow island flap of the thigh is presented which is independent of the presence of perfused blood vessels below the level of the knee joint-line. The pedicle, which is supplied by the proximal genicular anastomotic network, consists of the osteoarticular branch (OAB) and concomitant veins of the descending genicular artery. Based on cadaver dissections the OAB arose in 23/30 specimens (77%) together with the saphenous artery (SA). In 2/30 specimens (7%) the OAB originated directly from the superficial femoral artery and in 1/30 specimens (3%) the OAB was absent.

The use of the galeal skin island flap pedicled either on the superficial temporal or occipital vessels for coverage of scalp defects following neurosurgical treatment of cranial missile injuries, is presented. This technique was applied in seven consecutive patients. The defect was closed in all patients, however, only in three without complications. Indications, advantages and disadvantages of the treatment described are discussed.
