Siblings with typhoid fever: An investigation of intrafamilial transmission, clonality, and antibiotic susceptibility.

BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever usually manifests as an acute disease. However, asymptomatic carriage with Salmonella Typhi may occur. This study investigated a family setting of severe typhoid fever in Switzerland months after return from Bangladesh. METHOD: Standard microbiological procedures were performed. Testing for S. Typhi IgM antibodies was done using a novel immunochromographic lateral flow assay. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) followed by comparative core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) was performed on the S. Typhi isolates. RESULTS: Four months after returning from a visit t

Serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of human Salmonella enterica in Bangui, Central African Republic, from 2004 to 2013.

BACKGROUND: Limited epidemiological and antimicrobial resistance data are available on Salmonella enterica from sub-Saharan Africa. We determine the prevalence of resistance to antibiotics in isolates in the Central African Republic (CAR) between 2004 and 2013 and the genetic basis for resistance to third-generation cephalosporin (C3G). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A total of 582 non-duplicate human clinical isolates were collected. The most common serotype was Typhimurium (n = 180, 31% of the isolates). A randomly selected subset of S. Typhimurium isolates were subtyped by clustered regul

Mega-plasmid found worldwide confers multiple antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella Infantis of broiler origin in Russia.

Plasmids which are the mobile part of the bacterial genome can acquire and carry over genes conferring antimicrobial resistance, thus contributing to rapid adaptation of bacterial community to human-defined environment. In 2014, Israeli scientists have reported a large conjugative mega-plasmid pESI (plasmid for emerging S. Infantis) that provides multiple drug resistance (MDR) of Salmonella Infantis isolated from broilers. Later, very similar pESI-like plasmids have been found in Salmonella isolated from poultry in the United States, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, and Japan. Here we report detec

Surveillance of Wisconsin Organisms for Trends in Antimicrobial Resistance and Epidemiology: Introduction to the Program and Summary of 2016 Geographic Variation.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance merits surveillance because of its impact on quality health care. Past surveillance efforts in Wisconsin involved generation of a statewide antibiogram on the basis of antibiogram compilation. However, this modality of surveillance possesses limitations. METHODS: To characterize Wisconsin antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and elucidate geographic variation in antimicrobial resistance, a statewide surveillance network was created. Clinical microbiology laboratories submitted clinically significant bacterial isolates to a centralized testing facility for

The Versatile Mutational Resistome of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

One of the most striking features of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is its outstanding capacity for developing antimicrobial resistance to nearly all available antipseudomonal agents through the selection of chromosomal mutations, leading to the failure of the treatment of severe hospital-acquired or chronic infections. Recent whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data obtained from in vitro assays on the evolution of antibiotic resistance, in vivo monitoring of antimicrobial resistance development, analysis of sequential cystic fibrosis isolates, and characterization of widespread epidemic high-risk clones h

Lack of uniformity among United States recommendations for diagnosis and management of acute, uncomplicated cystitis.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Acute, uncomplicated cystitis is one of the most common bacterial infections seen in clinical practice. Quality improvement and antibiotic stewardship efforts to optimize cystitis management rely on clinicians managing patients in a manner recommended by experts and guidelines. However, it is unclear if recent recommendations for cystitis from experts and guidelines from US medical societies that provide recommendations are well aligned. METHODS: We examined recommendations and guidelines for acute, symptomatic cystitis in women published in US medical societies'

Multi-drug resistant Escherichia coli in diarrhoeagenic foals: Pulsotyping, phylotyping, serotyping, antibiotic resistance and virulence profiling.

Extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) possess the ability to cause extraintestinal infections such as urinary tract infections, neonatal meningitis and sepsis. While information is readily available describing pathogenic E. coli populations in food-producing animals, studies in companion/sports animals such as horses are limited. In addition, many antimicrobial agents used in the treatment of equine infections are also utilised in human medicine, potentially contributing to the spread of antibiotic resistance determinants among pathogenic strains. The aim of this study was to phenotypical
