OBJECTIVES: To present long-term patient-reported outcomes of tibial plafond fractures with and without concomitant ankle syndesmotic injury.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Academic Level 1 trauma center.
PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: One hundred ninety-seven patients with tibial plafond fractures (OTA/AO 43-B and 43-C) treated with definitive surgical fixation were contacted by telephone or email to obtain patient-reported outcome scores at a minimum follow-up of 1 year. Of those contacted, 148 (75%) had an intact syndesmosis, whereas 49 (25%) experienced a syndesmotic injury.

INTRODUCTION: Humeral shaft fractures make up 1-3% of all fractures and are most often treated nonoperatively; rates of union have been suggested to be greater than 85%. It has been postulated that proximal third fractures are more susceptible to nonunion development; however, current evidence is conflicting and presented in small cohorts. It is our hypothesis that anatomic site of fracture and fracture pattern are not associated with development of nonunion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, 147 consecutive patients treated nonoperatively for a humeral shaft fracture we

PURPOSE: To report the peri-implant fracture rates after locked plating of distal femur fractures and examine risk factors.
METHODS: Over a 7 year period, 89 AO/OTA 33A/C distal femur fractures were identified and reviewed. After excluding treatment with intramedullary nails, age under 50, those with the proximal femur protected, or those without 6 months of follow-up, 42 distal femur fractures in 41 patients, mean age 72.3 were studied. All were treated with lateral locked plating of distal femur fractures. The details of the constructs were recorded. Mean follow-up was 562 days (18.7 months

PURPOSE: Different reduction techniques and tools are described to facilitate anatomical reduction of acetabular fractures. However, maintenance of reduction, plate placement, and fracture fixation remain a challenge owing to the large surface area occupied by the available reduction tools. This study aims at radiological and functional assessment of the effectiveness of a novel reduction technique for the posterior column element in displaced acetabular fractures.
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted for evaluation of a novel reduction technique; the use of the conventional large holdi

Unicondylar fractures of the femur are uncommon injuries that can occur in the sagittal or, less frequently, in the coronal plane (Hoffa fractures). Distal femoral fractures are usually described following the AO/OTA Classification system which includes extra-articular, partial articular and intra-articular injuries, further divided in three types based on the pattern and comminution. Accurate reduction and stable fixation are needed especially in articular injuries in order to allow early mobilization and reduce complications such as knee stiffness, malunion or secondary osteoarthritis. INTRODUCTION: Galeazzi fractures, defined as fractures of the radial shaft with associated dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ), are uncommon injuries typically caused by high-energy blunt trauma or falls onto an outstretched hand. Ballistic mechanisms rarely produce this fracture pattern because they lack the torsional forces usually required to disrupt the DRUJ. Only isolated case reports of such injuries exist in the literature. This report presents the largest known case series of Galeazzi fractures resulting from gunshot wounds, providing new insight into their mechanism, man

BACKGROUND: The current controversy regarding the management of fractures of the lateral condyle of the humerus presenting between 3 to 12 weeks prompted us to evaluate our results of open reduction and internal fixation of such fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients operated between March 1995 and February 2001 qualified for this study. Five patients presented between 3-4 weeks, nine between 5-8 weeks and seven between 9-12 weeks post injury. Ten fractures were classified as stage II and eleven as stage III (Jacob et al. criteria). The mean age was 8 years (range: 4-14 years).

BACKGROUND: Double plate fixation for transcondylar fracture (TCF) tends to be more invasive to the soft tissue, and often carries a higher risk of postoperative complications, including ulnar nerve neuropathy. This study presents the outcomes of TCF of the distal humerus between patients treated with a single plate and cannulated cancellous screw fixation and patients treated with double plate fixation.
METHODS: Between 2011 and 2021, 371 cases involving treatment of distal humeral fracture were recorded in our multicenter (named TRON group) database. Patients of ≥ 65 years of age with TCF t

55 patients with intra-articular condyles fractures of humerus were operated in terms 1998 to 2013 year in the Clinic of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the Presidential Administration. All patients were operated by using of perosseous osteosynthesis method with external fixing device design A.I. Gorodnichenko. Indications for osteosynthesis were open and closed fractures of C1,2,3 types accordingly to AO Classification. Closed, atraumatic and reliable fixation of bone fragments intensifies patients faster, improves their life quality, decreases time of hospitalization and minimizes complicati

Introduction Metacarpal and phalangeal fractures are common upper limb fractures due to direct blows, axial loading, and torsional loading injuries. The universal goal in treating all fractures for the patient to achieve normal motion, but the ideal technique for stabilization is still debated. For internal fixation, Kirschner wires (K-wires) or miniplates can be used, and each carries certain advantages. No previous study has compared K-wire use to miniplate use in treating metacarpal and phalangeal fractures. Therefore, we conducted this randomized control trial to evaluate the outcomes of K

BACKGROUND: The femoral neck system (FNS) has been considered as a novel strategy for femoral neck fracture. The diversity of internal fixation creates difficulties in choosing an effective option for Pauwels III type femoral neck fractures. Therefore, it is significant to investigate the biomechanical effects of FNS versus conventional approaches on bones.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the biomechanical characteristics of FNS versus cannulated screws coupled with medial plate (CSS+MP) for the treatment of Pauwels III type femoral neck fractures.
METHODS: Through three-dimensional computer software

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on the optimal treatment of Tillaux-Chaput fractures. The results of our cases treated with mini-open surgery (open reduction and internal fixation) concerning efficacy and complications, we aim to compare other procedures (open, percutaneous, and arthroscopy-assisted) with the literature data and to look for an answer to the question of whether the primary treatment can be mini-open surgery.
METHODS: Between the years 2014 and 2017, 22 of 30 patients with Tillaux-Chaput fractures were treated using mini-open surgery, open reduction and internal fixation with

BACKGROUND: No international consensus regarding optimal non-surgical or surgical treatment of metacarpal fractures exists. Surgical outcome using patient-reported outcome measurements (PROMs) from national registers with large surgically treated population have rarely been reported. We present demographics and patient-reported outcomes in relation to fixation methods for surgically treated metacarpal fractures, using data from the Swedish National Quality Registry for Hand Surgery (HAKIR).
METHODS: In a retrospective analysis of a prospective collected dataset, patients aged ≥ 18 years with

Facial bone and especially mandibular fractures are injuries in which first aid and management of late complications require dental professionals, and consequently all dentists should be familiar with the modern principles of their treatment. Tooth involvement is common in mandibular and maxillary fractures and can require more treatment than does the jaw fracture. Nonsurgical treatment of bone fractures involves immobilization, which for the facial bones is achieved with maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) using dental fixed arch bars. Hence, associated tooth injuries are difficult or impossible
