[Neuroscience in the Courtroom: From responsibility to dangerousness, ethical issues raised by the new French law].

AIM: In the past few years, spectacular progress in neuroscience has led to the emergence of a new interdisciplinary field, the so-called "neurolaw" whose goal is to explore the effects of neuroscientific discoveries on legal proceedings and legal rules and standards. In the United States, a number of neuroscientific researches are designed specifically to explore legally relevant topics and a case-law has already been developed. In Europe, neuroscientific evidence is increasingly being used in criminal courtrooms, as part of psychiatric testimony, nourishing the debate about the legal implica

MHC-I diversity enables rapid adaptation during a viral pandemic in wild rabbit populations.

Emerging diseases can have devastating consequences for wild species, with long-term effects depending on the ability of the host to evolve resistance. Here, we show that major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes provided standing genetic variation that enabled rabbits to mount a rapid evolutionary response to the myxoma virus pandemic that began in the 1950s. Using historical and modern specimens starting in 1865 and spanning the pandemic, we found strong parallel shifts in MHC-I allele frequencies across Australia, Britain, and France, alongside population-specific signals. These evolutio

An Early Queer Riot? The 1905 Les Douaires Mutiny and Abolitionist Genealogies of Queer Politics.

In July 1905, the incarcerated youths detained at Les Douaires, France, rebelled following a crackdown of the penal administration on homosexual relationships. This episode might be one of the earliest recorded queer riots in modern European history. After discussing its political economic context, the course of the mutiny is described in detail, alongside its meaning for the study of past sexualities. Re-interpreting this mutiny as an act of self-defense of the youth against a morbid environment, this paper draws parallels between this insubordination and later queer riots to hold that the fi

[Recommendations from the GBMHM and the Fi-LMC for the diagnosis and management of chronic myeloid leukemia].

Molecular biologists play an important role in therapeutic decisions in the context of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML). Before treatment, it is mandatory to identify the BCR::ABL1 fusion and any prognostic cytogenetic abnormalities that may be present. During treatment, regular assessment of measurable residual disease (MRD) is essential to objectively evaluate the optimal response and identify situations of resistance to treatment. Monitoring of MRD is also required when considering treatment discontinuations. In cases of resistance, identifying mutations that confer resistance to tyrosine

A Case of Dibothriocephalosis (Dibothriocephalus latus) from Iseo Lake (Northern Italy): An Update on a Persistent Sanitary Issue.

Dibothriocephalosis is a fish-borne parasitic zoonosis that is caused by tapeworms of the Dibothriocephalus (syn. Diphyllobothrium) genus. This paper describes a human case of dibothriocephalosis associated with the consumption of a presumably infected fish, prepared at a restaurant near Iseo Lake (northern Italy). A month after, the patient found a segment of a worm in her stool. Molecular analysis identified it as Dibothriocephalus latus (syn. Diphyllobothrium latum). Several studies reported D. latus infections in patients from the subalpine regions of Switzerland, France, and Italy, but no

[Glaucoma surgeries: Long-term results - A review].

The surgical treatment of glaucoma has been and is still based on filtering surgeries, commonly used for about half a century. The safety and efficacy of these techniques have been well described, as it has also been done for cyclophotocoagulation and valves or tubes, indicated in France mostly for refractory glaucoma. Minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries have emerged in recent decades, increasing the number of therapeutic options, and allowing treatment decisions to be as patient-centered as possible. Most of these techniques have now been studied for more than five years. Since glaucoma is

[Anal fistulas: Sparing the sphincter].

SPARING THE SPHINCTER. Fistulotomy is the most used treatment for anal fistula. It is very effective with a cure rate of over 95% but carries a risk of incontinence. This has led to the development of various sphincter sparing techniques. The injection of biological glue or paste and the insertion of a plug have disappointing results and are expensive. The rectal advancement flap is still practised because of its cure rate of around 75% but it may result in some incontinence. Intersphincteric ligation of the fistula track and laser treatment are widely practised in France with cure rates betwe

An early form of European champions? Banking clubs between European integration and global banking (1960s-1990s).

Between the late 1950s and the mid-1970s, most large European commercial banks created European banking clubs, which were hybrid cooperative organisations meant to respond to American competition and to the progress of European integration. Based on the archives of several commercial banks from France and the UK, this article examines how the three main European clubs (EBIC, Europartners, and ABECOR) emerged and developed in the 1960s and 1970s, and continued to exist despite increasing challenges in the 1980s. The article argues that banking clubs were an early attempt at creating truly 'Euro

"The Terror of Death Began To Stalk Him": The Mysterious Fistula of Charles the Wise.

For 23 years, Charles V "The Wise" of France suffered from a mysterious fistula on his left arm that continuously drained pus. For all this time, he believed that as soon as the fistula ceased to weep, he would have a mere 15 days before death followed. His death in 1380, at the young age of 42, seemingly proved this assumption correct. This paper explores the possible explanations from arsenic poisoning at the hands of his longtime nemesis Charles II, as many of his contemporaries believed, to an undiagnosed case of hidradenitis suppurativa, to an underlying tuberculosis infection, to the pos

[Substitution treatments for opiate-dependent users. An experience of the Integrated Addiction Treatment Center in Dakar].

Methadone and buprenorphine are the two maintenance treatments in opiate addicts authorised in France since the end of the 1990's. More recently, some African countries such as Senegal have implemented a new health policy focused on reducing the risks by encouraging the use of methadone as maintenance treatment. The objectives of maintenance therapy are to reduce morbidity and mortality related to the consumption of heroin and other street opioids, to promote the integration of drug users into the healthcare system, and more generally, to improve their social integration. However, this strateg

An unexpected cause of dysuria in a cat in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infestation by Capillaria spp. in domestic cats is rather rare, but can cause clinical symptoms and affect behaviour. To our knowledge, this report is the first to describe a case of urinary capillariosis in a cat in Poland. CASE PRESENTATION: A female formerly stray cat aged about 1.5 years showing dysuria, stranguria, periuria and lethargy was presented at the veterinary clinic. Urinalysis revealed the presence of Capillaria plica eggs in the sediment. The cat was treated successfully with three topical doses of Broadline (Merial, Toulouse, France). CONCLUSIONS: C

[Therapeutic drug monitoring of cyamemazine: How to interpret a concentration? A review of literature].

Cyamemazine is the most prescribed antipsychotic drug in France, often in combination with another antipsychotic, for its sedative and anxiolytic component. Providing to physicians serum concentrations of cyamemazine in different contexts (compliance checking, ineffectiveness, adverse effects, intoxication, modification of pharmacokinetic parameters…) requires to interpret them correctly. This article presents an update on how to interpret a concentration of cyamemazine, wich remains poorly documented. The anxiolysis occurs at steady-state serum trough concentrations of 4 to 5μg/L; the antipsy

Seafarers' mental health in the COVID-19 era: lost at sea?

Seafarers are exposed to several physical and psychosocial stressors. Recent studies highlighted specific disorders as fatigue, boredom and diseases as depression. Seafarers are also commonly exposed to post-traumatic stress disorder (piracy, accidents, threats). Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) impacts seafarers with an estimated 400,000 of whom are stranded on vessels around the world, with extended time on board, repatriation's difficulties and the financial concerns of the unexpectedly unemployed. International Maritime Organization has established the Seafarer Crisis Action Team to hel

"Are We Safe Analysts?" Cisgender Countertransferential Fantasies in the Treatment of Transgender Patients.

The authors examine the impact of countertransference in two clinical cases of transgender patients treated by two cisgender analysts who are accustomed to receiving nonconforming gender patients in France and Brazil. The context is that of contemporary views of transphobic countertransference reactions, specifically the work of Griffin Hansbury, who describes these reactions in terms of "unthinkable anxieties." Like other theorists with expanding notions of countertransference, the authors view transphobia in analysis as an "instrument of research" and consider how taking responsibility for t

[Comparison and analysis of otitis media with effusion in children with guidelines of several countries].

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is defined as a collection of fluid in the middle ear without signs or symptoms of ear infection. If it sustains for more than 3 months, it is called chronic OME. It is difficult for parents to be aware of the disease because of the limited age of the patients and the incubation period of the disease. With the standardization of the treatments of the disease, several countries have issued OME guideline for children. The earliest guideline in our country was issued in 2008 and has not been updated yet. Afterwards, the following are guidelines issued by the Unite

[Transient hyperprolactinemia secondary to benzodiazepines: a case report].

Hyperprolactinemia is common and accounts for 20 to 25% of secondary amenorrhea causes. Here, we report a case of moderate hyperprolactinemia observed in a 40-year-old patient consulting for spaniomenorrhea and inguinal pain during a bartholinitis episode. After eliminating all known causes of hyperprolactinemia, alprazolam intake is finally assumed. This hyperprolactinemia is found in a few bibliographic studies and is also noted in the summary of product characteristics. However, benzodiazepines are not known as hyperprolactinemia-inducing drugs by the endocrinologists and do not appear in t

Acceptability and perception of the herpes zoster vaccine in the 65 and over population: A French observational study.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the acceptability and to describe the perception of vaccination against herpes zoster (HZ) for outpatients and hospitalized patients in Lyon, France, aged 65 years and over. An observational study was based on a questionnaire completed from a face-to-face interview from January 2018 to March 2019. Volunteer outpatients who attended private medical laboratories or who were hospitalized in the geriatric department, or who were at the ambulatory medical clinic for a consultation were asked to participate. A total of 907 individuals were interviewed, with a mea

[Insights on the management of Lyme disease].

Lyme disease is currently a hot topic in France due to a high incidence in some areas. Its clinical polymorphism can lead to misdiagnosis on one hand and to unjustified treatment on the other hand. Clinical symptoms vary considerably according to involved organs (skin, central and/or peripheral nervous system, joints, heart, eyes) and may be limited to or associated with general non-specific signs. Biological exams must be guided by clinical symptoms to help diagnosis and treatment decision according to clinical history, presentation, time of onset and duration of symptoms. However, to date, n
