Specific and broad-spectrum antibacterial effectors of type VI secretion system drive competition of Stenotrophomonas rhizophila against bacteria from seed microbiota.

The type VI secretion system (T6SS) is a bacterial weapon that injects deadly effectors (T6Es) directly into a target competitor encountered in a microbial community. Stenotrophomonas rhizophila CFBP13503 (Sr), a seed-borne bacterium, uses its T6SS to target a wide range of other bacterial species, impacting seed microbiota assembly, and controlling phytopathogen transmission from seed to seedling. How the large T6E repertoire and other features contribute to S. rhizophila's impact was investigated. Using transcriptional and translational reporters combined with fluorescence microscopy and pro

Modulation of innate immunity related genes resulting in prophylactic antimicrobial and antiviral properties.

BACKGROUND: The innate immunity acts during the early phases of infection and its failure in response to a multilayer network of co-infections is cause of immune system dysregulation. Epidemiological SARS-CoV-2 infections data, show that Influenza Virus (FLU-A-B-C) and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) are co-habiting those respiratory traits. These viruses, especially in children (mostly affected by 'multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children' [MIS-C] and the winter pandemic FLU), in the aged population, and in 'fragile' patients are causing alteration in immune response. Then, bacterial

Infections in patients with aplastic anemia.

Infection is a major cause of death in patients with aplastic anemia (AA). There are differences between the immunocompromised state of a patient with AA and the patient who is neutropenic due to chemotherapy and this leads to a difference in the infections that they incur. Prolonged neutropenia is one of the largest risk factors for the development of infections with the invasive mycoses and bacteria. Recovery from neutropenia is directly related to survival, and supportive care plays a large role in protection while the patient is in a neutropenic state. The most common invasive mycoses incl

A novel model of ischemic enteritis induced in rats by stenosis of the superior mesenteric artery.

AIMS: We established a new model of ischemic enteritis in rats and evaluated its usefulness for screening prophylactic drugs. MAIN METHODS: Male SD rats were used after 18 h of fasting. Under ether anesthesia, the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) was exposed, and a calibrated stenosis was produced by placing a needle on a blood vessel, ligating both the vessel and needle, and then removing the needle from the ligature. KEY FINDINGS: The stenosis caused severe damage on the anti-mesenteric side of the small intestine within 3 days; the severity of the damage increased with the gauge of a need

Do blood and meconium affect the detection of endotoxin in amniotic fluid with the limulus amebocyte gel clot assay?

The limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL), assay is the most sensitive technique for the detection of endotoxin in biological fluids. Because endotoxin is a component of gram-negative bacteria, the assay has been employed in the detection of gram-negative bacterial contamination of biological fluids. The LAL assay is rapid, inexpensive, easy to perform, and requires little laboratory expertise. When used in conjunction with the gram stain examination of amniotic fluid, it improves the detection of intra-amniotic infection before the availability of culture results. However, the usefulness of the LAL

Risk assessment of legionellosis in cardiology units.

Infective Endocarditis (IE) is a disease with high morbidity and mortality. Nowadays, in addition to classic pathogens were isolated exigent Gram negative bacteria as A. baumannii, A. lwoffii, C. burnetii, Bartonella, Chlamydia and Legionella. We present our experience of Legionella isolations in environmental sample (water and air) collected from the Cardiology units belonging to two hospitals in Messina (Italy). A total of 80 samples were carried out, 30 and 50, respectively in the first and in the second structure: 55 of water and 25 of aerosol. The positivity of 30% of the water samples an

[Listeriosis of central nervous system in patients with ulcerative colitis - case study].

In the recently an increase morbidity inflammatory bowel disease, including ulcerative colitis was observed. The use of purine analogs and their metabolites are associated with a higher incidence of infections in this group of patients. Listeriosis is an infectious disease caused by a relatively anaerobic gram-positive bacteria - Listeria monocytogenes. Common symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, but these pathogens can also cause myocarditis, central nervous system infections, including brain abscesses and sepsis. Since the incidence of Listeria monocytogenes is higher in pa

Primary actinomycosis of the foot in a patient with neurofibromatosis: a case report.

Actinomycosis is a chronic and suppurative infection caused by an endogenous gram-positive bacterium. The usual sites of infection are the head and neck, thorax, and abdomen and are almost always endogenous in origin. Primary actinomycosis is rare and is usually associated with external trauma. The authors report a case of a primary actinomycosis presented as a mass on the foot that mimics neurofibroma in a 56-year-old Asian woman with neurofibromatosis. The patient has no history of preceding trauma. She was treated with excisional biopsy. Histopathology of the excised mass showed features of

Primary actinomycosis of the foot: a case report and literature review.

Actinomycosis is an indolent, slowly progressive, suppurative infection caused by gram-positive branching bacteria of the genus Actinomyces. The organism is a member of the oral and gastrointestinal microflora of humans. The disease actinomycosis most commonly occurs in 3 body regions: cervicofacial (55% of patients), abdominopelvic (20%), and pulmonothoracic (15%). Involvement of other parts of the body is uncommon and usually secondary to a lesion in one or the other of the above sites. Extremity disease can occur by secondary involvement through direct extension or hematogenous spread. Howe

[Comparative studies on activities of antimicrobial agents against causative organisms isolated from patients with urinary tract infections (2004). I. Susceptibility distribution].

The bacterial strains isolated from 490 patients diagnosed as having urinary tract infections (UTIs) in 14 institutions in Japan were collected between August 2004 and July 2005. The susceptibilities of them to many kinds of antimicrobial agents were measured. Of them, 577 strains were estimated as causative bacteria and used for the measurement. The strains consisted of 156 gram-positive bacterial strains (27.0%) and 421 gram-negative bacterial strains (73.0%). Against Staphylococcus aureus, arbekacin (ABK), vancomycin (VCM) showed the strongest activity and prevented the growth of all strain

A Streptococcus mutans retrospective: from oral pathogen to bacterial paradigm.

From its discovery in the late 1800s to the present day, Streptococcus mutans research has been at the forefront of dental caries investigations, providing the foundation for our current understanding of the microbiological determinants of this disease. In addition, research on S. mutans has greatly advanced key areas of microbiology, establishing the organism as a notably useful model for understanding the biology of other streptococcal species, as well as Gram-positive bacteria more broadly. In this piece, we provide a retrospective of how S. mutans has served this dual role, highlighting sp
