Marfan Before Marfan? Iconodiagnostic Analysis of a Possible Marfan Spectrum Phenotype in an Etruscan Sculpture.

Marfan syndrome is a heritable connective tissue disorder characterized by multisystem involvement, particularly affecting the skeleton. We performed an iconodiagnostic evaluation of the Etruscan bronze statue "L'Ombra della Sera" to assess whether its morphological features may reflect a real connective tissue phenotype rather than symbolic elongation. Systemic features were evaluated according to the revised Ghent nosology. The statue exhibits disproportionate longitudinal growth, thoracic deformities, craniofacial characteristics, and pedal findings consistent with a systemic connective tis

First description of leucism in the deep-sea angular rough shark (Oxynotus centrina) and the first documented pigment disorder in family Oxynotidae Gill, 1912.

The capture of a rare, critically endangered adult angular rough shark, Oxynotus centrina (Linnaeus, 1758), with abnormal coloration is reported in this paper. The shark exhibited a partial reduction in pigmentation, resulting in an overall pale appearance with white-greyish patches. Since the retinal pigmentation appeared normal, the shark was considered leucistic. This represents the first documented case of leucism in this species and the first colour disorder reported in the family Oxynotidae Gill, 1912. Despite the atypical appearance, the physical health of the shark seemed unaffected, s

Mesenchymal stem cells: a promising tool for targeted gene therapy of endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a leading, benign gynecological disorder around the world. Last few years have witnessed tremendous growth in the field of endometriosis and endometrial stem-cell research. Despite advancements in the biology and pathology of endometriosis, disease recurrence is still an enigma. Gene therapy holds promise in treating many pathologic conditions including endometriosis. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) serve as ideal candidates for regenerative medicine and cell-based therapies. Owing to their specificity to the endometrium, residing endometrial MSC populations could be utilized as

Ossifying fibroma in Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome.

Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome represents an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by connective tissue nevi and osteopoikilosis. Cutaneous lesions may contain either predominantly elastic fibers or predominantly collagen fibers or may show both connective tissue components. The disease results from mutations in LEMD3 (MAN1), which lead to enhanced transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling and resultant changes in fibroblast function. TGF-β alterations have been implicated in a number of fibrotic disorders, and it is therefore not surprising that a range of cutaneous and skeletal abnorma

Thrombotic microangiopathic syndromes associated with drugs, HIV infection, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cancer.

Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) has multiple etiologies. In the four disorders described in this review, the primary organ involved is the kidney. Drug-associated TMA can be an acute, immune-mediated disorder or the result of gradual, dose-dependent toxicity. TMA may occur in patients with advanced HIV infection, possibly mediated by angio-invasive infections. TMA following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation may also be caused by drug toxicity; the pathogenesis may involve inhibition of vascular endothelial cell growth factor in renal podocytes. Malignancies of many types with

Tuberous sclerosis and epilepsy.

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is an inherited disorder resulting from mutations in one of two tumor suppressor genes: TSC1 (hamartin) and TSC2 (tuberin). Hamartin and tuberin, the protein products of TSC1 and TSC2, form a functional protein complex in the mTOR pathway that controls cell growth and proliferation. Epilepsy is the most common disorder in TSC, frequently associated with intractable and early onset seizures, and often as infantile spasms. Epilepsy surgery is an option for TSC patients with medically intractable epilepsy. Multimodality neuroimaging has improved the detection of e

Cytogenetics and granulopoietic effects of bone marrow fibroblastic cells in Fanconi's anaemia.

To determine if abnormalities exist in the bone marrow stroma in Fanconi's anaemia, we studied the cytogenetic composition of in vitro bone marrow fibroblastic cells (FC) from a patient with this disorder and compared it to those obtained from skin fibroblasts, peripheral blood lymphocytes, and direct bone marrow preparations. The presence of granulocytic progenitors in bone marrow and T lymphocyte colonies in peripheral blood was also determined in addition to the ability of this patient's FC to stimulate normal granulocytic progenitors. We found that the FC had far fewer chromosomal abnormal

[Developmental trajectories of anxiety disorder symptoms in adolescents: a five-year prospective community study].

BACKGROUND: The relatively recent adoption of modern statistical analysis methods, such as latent growth modelling (lgm), makes it possible to study differences in the individual trajectories of development over time. AIM: To examine prospectively the developmental trajectories of anxiety disorder symptoms in a large sample of adolescents (N = 1,318) from the general population over a period of five years. METHOD: The adolescents were divided into two cohorts: early adolescents (average age 12 at the first measurement) and middle adolescents (average age 16 at the first measurement). Age and

[Correlations between personality changes and symptom changes in somatization disorders and anxiety disorders--a comparative study].

AIM: The comparison of the relations between personality changes and main symptom changes observed during complex integrative psychotherapy in 100 somatization patients and 100 anxiety disorder patients. METHOD: Two self-descriptive measures--the 16PF of R.B. Cattell and the Symptom Checklist "O" were used in the study. The second measure chosen for the study was a 14-scale screen for the presence of functional disorder symptoms and 5 scales referring to phobias, general anxiety, somatization and conversions. Questionnaires were fulfilled twice--before and after psychotherapy. RESULTS: It wa

Psychological distress in victims of intimate partner violence: the buffering effect of post-traumatic growth and metacognitive abilities.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive public health issue associated with severe psychological consequences, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and global psychopathology. Nevertheless, many survivors also experience positive psychological changes, defined as post-traumatic growth (PTG). The present study aimed to examine the associations between psychopathological symptoms, metacognitive abilities, and post-traumatic growth, and to test whether metacognitive abilities mediate the relationship between psychological distress and PTG in women survivors of IPV.

Age at disease onset is an independent risk factor for physical growth of children with idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis (IPH), a pediatric pulmonary disorder requiring prolonged corticosteroid therapy raises concerns about growth impairment. While corticosteroid-induced stunting is well-documented, its specific impact on the height of IPH patients remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of corticosteroid exposure on height outcomes and identify key predictors of growth restriction in children with IPH. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 45 IPH patients [2018-2023] were stratified into normal-stature (n=37) and short-stature (n=8) groups

Predictors of growth patterns in children with mucopolysaccharidosis I after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I) is an autosomal-recessive metabolic disorder caused by an enzyme deficiency of lysosomal alpha-l-iduronidase (IDUA). Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the therapeutic option of choice in MPS I patients younger than 2.5 years, which has a positive impact on neurocognitive development. However, impaired growth remains a problem. In this monocentric study, 14 patients with MPS I (mean age 1.72 years, range 0.81-3.08) were monitored according to a standardised follow-up program after successful allogeneic HSCT. A detailed anthropometric program

Puerarin enhance vascular proliferation and halt apoptosis in thiram-induced avian tibial dyschondroplasia by regulating HIF-1α, TIMP-3 and BCL-2 expressions.

Tetramethyl thiuram disulfide (thiram) is a dithiocarbamate pesticide used for crop protection and storage. But, it's widespread utilization is associated with deleterious growth plate cartilage disorder in broilers termed as avian tibial dyschondroplasia (TD). TD results in non-mineralized and less vascularized proximal tibial growth plate cartilage causing lameness and poor growth performance. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of puerarin against thiram toxicity in TD affected chickens. One-day-old broiler chickens (n = 240) were alienated into three equal groups i.e. control

Raptor/mTORC1 loss in adipocytes causes progressive lipodystrophy and fatty liver disease.

OBJECTIVE: Normal adipose tissue growth and function is critical to maintaining metabolic homeostasis and its excess (e.g. obesity) or absence (e.g. lipodystrophy) is associated with severe metabolic disease. The goal of this study was to understand the mechanisms maintaining healthy adipose tissue growth and function. METHODS: Adipose tissue senses and responds to systemic changes in growth factor and nutrient availability; in cells mTORC1 regulates metabolism in response to growth factors and nutrients. Thus, mTORC1 is poised to be a critical intracellular regulator of adipocyte metabolism.

Update on Kaposi's sarcoma and other HHV8 associated diseases. Part 2: pathogenesis, Castleman's disease, and pleural effusion lymphoma.

The pathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is better understood since the identification of the novel human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8), which can be found in all forms of KS. Viral oncogenesis and cytokine-induced growth, as well as some states of immunocompromise, contribute to its development. Several virally encoded genes--eg, bcl-2, interleukin 6, cyclin D, G-protein-coupled receptor, and interferon regulatory factor--provide key functions on cellular proliferation and survival. Growth promotion of KS is further stimulated by various proinflammatory cytokines and growth factors such as tumour nec

The growth of conduct problem behaviors from middle childhood to early adolescence: sex differences and the suspected influence of early alcohol use.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the levels and rates of growth of conduct problem behaviors over time in an urban sample of American youth. Our hypotheses focused on differences between the sexes and between youths with and those without early use of alcohol without parental permission. METHOD: Data for this study are from an ongoing epidemiologic study of urban public school students, recruited originally at the time of their entry into Grades 1-2 between 1985 and 1987. Each spring, from 1991 to 1993, a total of 1,212 students were interviewed privately for this study. A total of 408 (54.

Developmental challenges in infants who are HIV-exposed uninfected.

INTRODUCTION: The global HIV epidemic continues to affect millions of people and significantly affects children. Approximately 16 million children born to HIV-positive women, categorized as HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU), face unique developmental hurdles despite not contracting the virus. These children are more likely to experience developmental issues due to factors such as exposure to maternal HIV, antiretroviral therapy (ART), nutritional shortages, and adverse social conditions. Research indicates that children who are HIV-exposed but uninfected (HEU) may have subpar neurodevelopmental out
