Back-on-Track: Protocol for Randomised Controlled Feasibility Trial of Behavioural Activation in Farmers with Mood Problems.

The mental health of people living in farming communities has been identified as an important public health issue. Cumulative exposure to a range of situational factors contributes to heightened risk of poor mental health and suicide. Access to evidence-based psychological treatments is limited by the availability of skilled mental health professionals. The aim of this trial-co-designed by members of the farming community-is to establish the feasibility of conducting randomised controlled, trial-testing, peer-worker-delivered Behavioural Activation in the farming community. We will undertake a

The culture of healthy living in communities.

What defines a group of individuals as part of a community is broadly interpreted and depends on the context of the group being categorized. For this review, community may be defined as "as a group of people with diverse characteristics who are linked by social ties, share common perspectives, and engage in joint action in geographical locations or settings". A given community will possess unique cultural attributes, defined by the American Psychological Association as "the values, beliefs, language, rituals, traditions, and other behaviors that are passed from one generation to another within

Enabling dads and improving First Nations adolescent mental health: a pragmatic randomised controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: There are few empirically supported social and emotional well-being programmes for First Nations adolescents, and we found none targeting those living in Aboriginal communities in remote areas of Australia. The dearth of social and emotional well-being programmes is concerning given that adolescents in remote Australia are at much greater risk of mental disorder and suicide. Our pragmatic community-based research intervention 'Enabling Dads and Improving First Nations Adolescent Mental Health' is designed by and for First Nations people living in remote communities to promote and

The influence of environmental factors on the diversity and structure of airborne fungal and bacterial communities.

Airborne fungal and bacterial communities are key components of microbial diversity, with significant consequences for human health, environmental processes, and ecosystem stability. This review analyzes the impact of environmental factors, such as climatic conditions, air pollutants, geographical locations, seasonal variations, human activities, soil and vegetation, on the diversity and structural composition of airborne fungal and bacterial communities. By evaluating functional features and diversity of fungi and bacteria in various contexts, this review highlights the differences in the mic

Tobacco and nicotine cessation in military service members and veterans: implications for area health education centers.

Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) have played a longstanding role in strengthening the United States (U.S.) health care workforce through education and training and expanding access to care services in rural and underserved communities. As tobacco and nicotine use emerged as a major preventable cause of morbidity and mortality decades ago, AHECs played a key role in the integration of evidence-based cessation education into health professions training and community-based programming. Tobacco and nicotine use remains disproportionately high among U.S. military service members and veterans,

The health status of incarcerated people in Canada: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: People who experience incarceration in Canada have been historically more likely to experience poor health than community-based populations. Although incarcerated people are entitled to health care equivalent to community standards, evidence suggests this is inconsistently achieved in Canada. We conducted a narrative review to synthesize contemporary evidence on health status and health care utilization by incarcerated people in Canada, including changes observed during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science for

One positive impact of health care reform to physicians: the computer-based patient record.

The health care industry is an information-dependent business that will require a new generation of health information systems if successful health care reform is to occur. We critically need integrated clinical management information systems to support the physician and related clinicians at the direct care level, which in turn will have linkages with secondary users of health information such as health payors, regulators, and researchers. The economic dependence of health care industry on the CPR cannot be underestimated, says Jeffrey Ritter. He sees the U.S. health industry as about to ente

The psychosocial impact of receiving a polygenic risk score informing risk of prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Use of polygenic risk scores (PRS) as a risk-stratification tool in cancer screening is an area of increasing interest. The BARCODE1 study is an observational prostate cancer screening study, investigating the use of PRS to risk-stratify people by risk of prostate cancer, with those identified as higher risk invited for prostate cancer screening. Participants of BARCODE1 were invited to take part in a psychosocial sub-study aiming to explore the effect of receiving a polygenic risk score on psychological health, family risk communication and impact on health behaviours. METHODS: 1

Factors Associated With Consenting to Receive an Automated Email Summary After a Sexual Health Clinic Visit.

BACKGROUND: Electronic health records allow for inexpensive communication with patients. In March 2021, the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre implemented an automated email summary ("Sexual Health Automated Visit Email" [SHAVE]) of a client's visit. This study evaluates the proportion of attendees at a sexual health service who opted in or out of SHAVE. METHODS: This study was conducted at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre in Australia between March 2021 and June 2022. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to examine the client characteristics associated with cons

Barriers to maternal health services during the Ebola outbreak in three West African countries: a literature review.

INTRODUCTION: The Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa, affecting Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone from 2014 to 2016, was a substantial public health crisis with health impacts extending past EVD itself. Access to maternal health services (MHS) was disrupted during the epidemic, with reductions in antenatal care, facility-based deliveries and postnatal care. We aimed to identify and describe barriers related to the uptake and provision of MHS during the 2014-2016 EVD outbreak in West Africa. METHODS: In June 2020, we conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed publications and gr

Health status and air pollution related socioeconomic concerns in urban China.

BACKGROUND: China is experiencing environmental issues and related health effects due to its industrialization and urbanization. The health effects associated with air pollution are not just a matter of epidemiology and environmental science research, but also an important social science issue. Literature about the relationship of socioeconomic factors with the environment and health factors is inadequate. The relationship between air pollution exposure and health effects in China was investigated with consideration of the socioeconomic factors. METHODS: Based on nationwide survey data of Chi

Analysis of Spinal Dysfunction in Breast Cancer Survivors with Lymphedema.

The US is facing a growing epidemic of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), with over 2.5 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis reported in 2021 and again in 2022. This public health crisis disproportionately affects youth and racial and ethnic minority communities, exacerbating barriers to accessing sexual health services. Untreated STIs can lead to severe health consequences, including infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, and increased risk of HIV transmission and acquisition. Managed care organizations (MCOs) within Medicaid play a pivotal role in improving sexual heal

BACKGROUND: American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities in the United States experience significant health disparities, compounded by socioeconomic challenges, systemic racism, limited health information access, and mistrust of health research, mainstream healthcare, and federal health organizations. Misinformation on digital media and variable digital health literacy further hinder informed decision-making. OBJECTIVE: Explore digital health literacy, digital technology use for health information-seeking, and the perceived influence of misinformation on health decision-making among

A Quasi-Experimental Study of an Online Communication Partner Training Program for Orthoptic Students.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Current clinical practice guidelines recommend communication partner training (CPT) for healthcare professionals to maximise effective communication when providing care to clients with an acquired brain injury (ABI) from stroke and traumatic brain injury. Orthoptists are eye care professionals who work with people with ABI who often have concurrent communication and visual impairments. However, CPT studies often do not include orthoptists, and training programs seldom explicitly address the intersection of vision and challenges to common supportive communication strategies
