Macrophages and small extracellular vesicle mediated-intracellular communication in the peritoneal microenvironment: Impact on endometriosis development.

Endometriosis is an inflammatory disease that is defined as the growth of endometrium-like tissue outside the uterus, commonly on the lining of the pelvic cavity, visceral organs and in the ovaries. It affects around 190 million women of reproductive age worldwide and is associated with chronic pelvic pain and infertility, which greatly impairs health-related life quality. The symptoms of the disease are variable, this combined with a lack of diagnostic biomarkers and necessity of surgical visualisation to confirm disease, the prognosis can take an average timespan of 6-8 years. Accurate non-i

Understanding variations in diarrhea management across healthcare facilities in Bangladesh: a formative qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Acute diarrhea remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality with over 6.3 billion cases and 1.3 million deaths annually. Despite the existence of standardized guidelines for diarrhea management, wide variability in clinical practice exists, particularly in resource-limited settings. The goal of this study was to qualitatively explore how diarrhea management in Bangladesh varies according to resource availability, clinical setting, and provider roles. METHODOLOGY: This was a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional qualitative study conducted in three diverse hospital settin

Wheat amylase/trypsin inhibitors (ATIs): occurrence, function and health aspects.

Amylase/trypsin inhibitors (ATIs) are widely consumed in cereal-based foods and have been implicated in adverse reactions to wheat exposure, such as respiratory and food allergy, and intestinal responses associated with coeliac disease and non-coeliac wheat sensitivity. ATIs occur in multiple isoforms which differ in the amounts present in different types of wheat (including ancient and modern ones). Measuring ATIs and their isoforms is an analytical challenge as is their isolation for use in studies addressing their potential effects on the human body. ATI isoforms differ in their spectrum of

Study protocol: navigating access to gender care in Ireland-a mixed-method study on the experiences of transgender and non-binary youth.

INTRODUCTION: There has been a global increase in demand for gender-specific healthcare services and a recognition that healthcare access is complex and convoluted, even in countries with well-developed healthcare services. Despite evidence in Ireland supporting the improvement in physical and mental health following access to gender care, little is known about the local healthcare navigation challenges. Internationally, research focuses primarily on the experience of service users and omits the perspective of other potential key stakeholders. Youth experiences are a particularly seldom-heard

Examining the transformation of midwifery education in Australia to inform future directions: An integrative review.

BACKGROUND: Integral to quality midwifery practice is the education of midwives. Like other countries, Australia faces ongoing challenges in delivering midwifery education programs. Reasons include escalating program costs, challenges in securing meaningful clinical experiences, subsumption of midwifery with nursing, and associated loss of identity in some institutions. AIM: To critically examine the literature exploring the historical and current drivers, supports and impediments for entry-to-practice midwifery programs to identify strategies to strengthen midwifery education in Australia.

Patient prioritization of routine and patient-reported postoperative outcome measures: a prospective, nested cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Understanding which outcomes matter most and improving outcomes for the growing population of older surgical patients are top priorities for Canadian anesthesia research. Nevertheless, there is little understanding of which outcomes older surgical patients prioritize most highly. We evaluated how older people prioritized six outcomes after elective noncardiac surgery. These outcomes were recommended in core outcome sets for perioperative medicine. METHODS: Following ethical approval, we conducted a prospective, nested, cross-sectional study of people one year after they had major ele

Real-life Wrist Movement Patterns Capture Motor Impairment in Individuals with Ataxia-Telangiectasia.

Sensitive motor outcome measures are needed to efficiently evaluate novel therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. Devices that can passively collect movement data in the home setting can provide continuous and ecologically valid measures of motor function. We tested the hypothesis that movement patterns extracted from continuous wrist accelerometer data capture motor impairment and disease progression in ataxia-telangiectasia. One week of continuous wrist accelerometer data were collected from 31 individuals with ataxia-telangiectasia and 27 controls aged 2-20 years old. Longitudinal wrist s

Understanding the risks of mercury sulfide nanoparticles in the environment: Formation, presence, and environmental behaviors.

Mercury (Hg) could be microbially methylated to the bioaccumulative neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg), raising health concerns. Understanding the methylation of various Hg species is thus critical in predicting the MeHg risk. Among the known Hg species, mercury sulfide (HgS) is the largest Hg reservoir in the lithosphere and has long been considered to be highly inert. However, with advances in the analytical methods of nanoparticles, HgS nanoparticles (HgS NPs) have recently been detected in various environmental matrices or organisms. Furthermore, pioneering laboratory studies have reported th

Mitigating the impact of COVID-19 on colorectal cancer screening: Organized service screening perspectives from the Asia-Pacific region.

Colorectal cancer(CRC) is one of the most prevalent malignancies in the Asia-Pacific region, and many countries in this region have launched population CRC service screening. In this study, CRC screening key indicators, including the FIT(fecal immunochemical test) screening rate (or participation rate) and the rate of undergoing colonoscopy after positive FIT in 2019 and 2020, were surveyed in individual countries in the Asia-Pacific region. The impact of the pandemic on the effectiveness of CRC screening was simulated given different screening rates and colonoscopy rates and assuming the pand

Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE): Position paper on diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment by the MNGIE International Network.

Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE) is a rare autosomal recessive disease caused by TYMP mutations and thymidine phosphorylase (TP) deficiency. Thymidine and deoxyuridine accumulate impairing the mitochondrial DNA maintenance and integrity. Clinically, patients show severe and progressive gastrointestinal and neurological manifestations. The onset typically occurs in the second decade of life and mean age at death is 37 years. Signs and symptoms of MNGIE are heterogeneous and confirmatory diagnostic tests are not routinely performed by most laboratories, accounting fo

Provider-Patient Communication on Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (Prep) for HIV Prevention: An Exploration of Healthcare Provider Challenges.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a once-daily pill prescribed by healthcare providers to protect patients from contracting HIV. Current data suggests that a minority of healthcare providers have ever prescribed it to clinically-eligible patients. The present study employed a social ecological framework to understand the factors that influence providers' engagement in patient-centered communication regarding PrEP. Semi-structured interviews (N = 20) with physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners working in primary and specialty care practices in Western New York were thematica

The COVID-19 pandemic: Psychological and behavioral responses to the shutdown of the beauty industry.

OBJECTIVE: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Australia implemented widespread closure of beauty and cosmetic services to control the virus spread. The effect of these restrictions is unknown, given that beauty services are widely used for stress relief or to enhance confidence. The current study explored the relationship between engagement in appearance-focused behaviors and distress regarding beauty service closure. Participants with high and low levels of dysmorphic concern were compared to determine whether COVID-19 restrictions may affect these groups differently. METHOD: An online survey was
