Functional neuroanatomy of response inhibition in bipolar disorders--combined voxel based and cognitive performance meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Impaired response inhibition underlies symptoms and altered functioning in patients with bipolar disorders (BD). The interpretation of fMRI studies requires an accurate estimation of neurocognitive performance, for which individual studies are typically underpowered. Thus, we performed the first combined meta-analysis of fMRI activations and neurocognitive performance in studies investigating response inhibition in BD. METHODS: We used signed differential mapping to combine anatomical coordinates of activation and standardized differences between means to evaluate neurocognitive p

Improving MRT image quality in patients with movement disorders.

OBJECTIVE: In order to improve image quality in a simultaneous fMRI-EEG study with patients suffering from the involuntary movements typical for Huntington's disease, the aim was to develop a technique for immobilizing the heads of our patients inside an MRI head coil. METHODS: We modified a mask technique previously used for reliable repositioning in temporally fractionated radiotherapy. The mask was tested in three patients with Huntington's disease, acquiring structural and functional MR images with simultaneous EEG with and without the mask. RESULTS: Image as well as EEG signal quality w

Gray matter abnormalities as brain structural vulnerability factors for bipolar disorder: A review of neuroimaging studies of individuals at high genetic risk for bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Cortical and subcortical gray matter abnormalities have been reported in individuals at high genetic risk for bipolar disorder, but the findings are inconsistent. The aim of this study was to review the available literature to identify common findings that could represent brain structural vulnerability factors for bipolar disorder and to discuss challenges for the advancement of the field. METHOD: A systematic search was conducted using the PubMed database to identify all original articles investigating cortical or subcortical gray matter abnormalities in first-degree relatives of

Detection of calcifications in vivo and ex vivo after brain injury in rat using SWIFT.

Calcifications represent one component of pathology in many brain diseases. With MRI, they are most often detected by exploiting negative contrast in magnitude images. Calcifications are more diamagnetic than tissue, leading to a magnetic field disturbance that can be seen in phase MR images. Most phase imaging studies use gradient recalled echo based pulse sequences. Here, the phase component of SWIFT, a virtually zero acquisition delay sequence, was used to detect calcifications ex vivo and in vivo in rat models of status epilepticus and traumatic brain injury. Calcifications were detected i

Medial lemniscus lesion in pediatric hemiplegic patients without corticospinal tract and posterior thalamic radiation lesion.

OBJECTIVES: Using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), we investigated the state of medial lemniscus (ML), corticospinal tract (CST), and posterior thalamic radiation (PTR), which were expected as probable reasons for clinical hemiplegia in pediatric patients, especially those who showed impaired fine motor control and proprioception, but no definite motor weakness or spasticity. METHODS: We recruited 13 hemiplegic patients and 8 age-matched healthy control subjects. Fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) for the bilateral ML, CST, and PTR were calculated and compared

Abnormal response to emotional stimulus in male adolescents with violent behavior in China.

The objective of the study is to explore the characteristics of emotional stimulus in adolescents with violent behavior and to identify the correlated dysfunctional regions of the brain. An event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging was obtained while the participants passively viewed pictures with neutral or negative affective valence. 15 male adolescents with violent behavior, ranging in age from 12 to 18 years old, and 16 healthy age-matched control subjects were enrolled in the study. While looking at neutral pictures, several brain regions were activated more intensely in the vio

Clinics in diagnostic imaging (134). Testicular lymphoma.

A 55-year-old man presented with a painless right scrotal mass for the past three months. Scrotal ultrasonography showed a large circumscribed hypoechoic mass with marked hypervascularity occupying almost the entire right testis. The epididymis and scrotal skin were normal. Right radical orchiectomy was performed. Histopathology revealed lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell type confined within the tunica albuginea. The patient made a good postoperative recovery. No evidence of lymphoma in other organs was demonstrated. We discuss the differential diagnosis of ultrasonographic intratesticular masses

Hippocampal subregions are differentially affected in the progression to Alzheimer's disease.

Atrophy within the hippocampus (HP) as measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a promising biomarker for the progression to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Subregions of the HP along the longitudinal axis have been found to demonstrate unique function, as well as undergo differential changes in the progression to AD. Little is known of relationships between such HP subregions and other potential biomarkers, such as neuropsychological (NP), genetic, and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) beta amyloid and tau measures. The purpose of this study was to subdivide the hippocampus to determine how the he

Gray matter abnormalities in Major Depressive Disorder: a meta-analysis of voxel based morphometry studies.

BACKGROUND: Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) has been widely used to quantify structural brain changes associated with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). While some consistent findings have been reported, individual studies have also varied with respect to the key brain regions affected by the illness, and how these abnormalities are related to patients' clinical characteristics. Here, we aimed to identify those brain regions that most consistently showed gray matter anomalies in MDD, and their clinical correlates, using meta-analytic techniques. METHODS: A systematic search of VBM studies was app

Alternate reading strategies and variable asymmetry of the planum temporale in adult resilient readers.

Resilient readers are characterized by impaired phonological processing despite skilled text comprehension. We investigated orthographic and semantic processing in resilient readers to examine mechanisms of compensation for poor phonological decoding. Performance on phonological (phoneme deletion, pseudoword reading), orthographic (orthographic choice, orthographic analogy), and semantic (semantic priming, homograph resolution) tasks was compared between resilient, poor and proficient readers. Asymmetry of the planum temporale was investigated in order to determine whether atypical readers sho

Tract-based spatial statistics of magnetic resonance images to assess disease and treatment effects in perinatal asphyxial encephalopathy.

Biomarkers are required for efficient trials of neuroprotective interventions after perinatal asphyxia. This study aimed to determine whether diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) analyzed by tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) may be a suitable biomarker of disease and treatment effects after perinatal asphyxia in small groups of patients. We performed TBSS from DTI obtained at 3 T from eight healthy control infants, 10 untreated and 10 hypothermia-treated infants with neonatal encephalopathy. Median (range) postnatal age at scan was 1 d (1-21) in the healthy infants, 6 d (4-20) in the cooled, and

Magnetic resonance imaging findings in Loeys-Dietz syndrome.

Loeys-Dietz syndrome is a newly described entity characterised by a constellation of arterial tortuosity, cranial malformations, and hypertelorism. We report a case of a 7-year old boy with confirmed Loeys-Dietz syndrome and discuss magnetic resonance imaging as a complete technique for assessment and follow-up of aggressive vascular pathology in the brain, thorax, and abdomen, which may dictate early surgical intervention.

Brain activation evoked by erotic films varies with different menstrual phases: an fMRI study.

In humans, fluctuating hormone levels throughout the menstrual cycle are believed to regulate many cyclical sexual behaviors and motivational processes. However, there is a dearth of research investigating the neural correlates of this phenomenon. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to identify brain regions involved in sexual arousal's regulatory process. Fifteen female participants were scanned while viewing erotic film excerpts at three time points during a single menstrual cycle: ovulation, menstruation, and at one additional time point. Tripled two-group differences analysis rev

Current advances in lesion-symptom mapping of the human cerebellum.

While high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) combined with newer analysis methods has become a powerful tool in human cerebral lesion studies, comparatively few studies have used these advanced imaging techniques to study lesions of the human cerebellum and their associated symptoms. This review will summarize the methodology of MRI-based lesion-symptom mapping of the human cerebellum and discuss its potential for gaining insights into cerebellar function. The investigation of patients with defined focal lesions yields the greatest potential for obtaining meaningful correl

Measuring extent of ductal carcinoma in situ in breast excision specimens: a comparison of 4 methods.

CONTEXT: Measuring the extent of nonpalpable ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) in a breast specimen is challenging but important because it influences patient management. There is no standardized method for estimating the extent of DCIS, although serial sequential sampling with mammographic correlation is considered an accurate method. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the extent of DCIS using various methods and to compare these estimations with the extent as determined by the serial sequential sampling method. DESIGN: A total of 78 primary breast excisions with DCIS were retrospectively reviewed. All s

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in children sedated with propofol or midazolam.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) requires patient immobility and children generally need to be sedated. The ideal sedative agent for functional MRI (fMRI) should only minimally hamper the neurophysiologic effect of the administered sensorial stimulation. This study compares the effect of propofol and midazolam on the fMRI auditory activation pattern in children. Fourteen children in the 3 to 7 year age group without neurologic or auditory deficits were randomly assigned to receive propofol or midazolam for sedation during auditory fMRI. Two patients in the midazolam group were excluded due to
