The prevalence, risk factors and outcomes of retinopathy of prematurity at a tertiary care centre in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a significant cause of preventable blindness in premature infants. The prevalence of ROP is increasing, particularly in resource-constrained settings. Low birthweight (BW), low gestational age (GA) and other neonatal risk factors are identified as key contributors. In South Africa (SA), intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) is commonly used for treating type 1 ROP due to its accessibility and cost-effectiveness. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence, risk factors and outcomes of ROP in a tertiary hospital in SA infants, with a focus on the use of IVB

Surgical outcomes of liver resection for hepatoblastoma in infants versus older children: A bi-centric, propensity-score-matched, comparative study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most common pediatric liver malignancy, with most patients undergoing surgical resection after neoadjuvant chemotherapy at an age older than one year. Infants (≤12 months) undergoing liver resection represent a distinct and less studied subgroup, considered more vulnerable and at increased surgical risk by some clinicians. This study aimed to compare perioperative outcomes between infants and older children undergoing hepatectomy for HB to determine whether surgery in infancy is associated with increased risks. METHODS: This bi-centric study incl

Influence of Retinopathy of Prematurity and Laser Therapy on Intraocular Pressure in Preterm Infants.

PRÉCIS: Intraocular pressure (IOP) decreases as preterms mature and in moderate retinopathy of prematurity, IOP is initially low and transiently rises after laser treatment. PURPOSE: This study aimed to measure intraocular pressure (IOP) in preterm infants with and without retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and evaluate the effect of laser treatment on IOP. METHOD: This prospective nonrandomized comparative study included infants born before 34 weeks of gestation weighing <2000 g at a tertiary care research and referral institute. Those with ocular or systemic conditions or requiring surgical

Clinical Presentation of Postnatally Acquired Cytomegalovirus Infection in Preterm Infants-A Case Series Report.

Background: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is the leading cause of congenital and acquired viral infections in newborns. While acquired infections are often asymptomatic, premature infants-especially those born before 30 weeks of gestation or with a very low birth weight (<1500 g)-are at an increased risk for severe infections. These can manifest as thrombocytopenia, liver failure, sepsis-like symptoms, and, in rare cases, death. HCMV is transmitted through various human secretions, including breast milk, which is the optimal feeding method for premature infants. Methods: We present five prematu

Nissen Fundoplication in Infants With Severe Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia: A Propensity-Matched Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a common respiratory morbidity among premature infants. Nissen fundoplication may be performed on infants with BPD to protect the lungs from gastroesophageal reflux-related aspiration, but the indications and benefits associated with fundoplication are not well-defined. This study evaluated associations of Nissen with clinical outcomes in infants with severe BPD (sBPD), using propensity score matching to minimize bias and confounding. METHODS: Infants ≤31 wk gestational age with sBPD (grade 2-3) admitted to a single neonatal intensive care uni

Utility of Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Preterm Infants with Germinal Matrix Hemorrhage and Intraventricular Hemorrhage: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and germinal matrix hemorrhage (GMH) are the most common brain injuries in preterm infants. Neonates with these injuries are at greater risk of impaired neurodevelopmental outcome. Current guidelines recommend screening infants with cranial ultrasound (CUS); however, this is prone to missing subtle injury patterns, particularly within the posterior fossa. The present report sought to discuss the utility of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in preterm infants. METHODS: A systematic review of PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, and Ovid EMBASE was conducted following

Clinical characteristics of preterm and term infants with Ureaplasma in gastric fluid.

BACKGROUND: Ureaplasma spp. is an endemic microorganism that causes placental chorioamnionitis or preterm delivery in pregnant women, and the occurrence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia or intraventricular hemorrhaging in preterm infants after birth, although the pathogenicity of Ureaplasma remains controversial. The association between Ureaplasma exposure and the symptoms or outcomes of infected mothers or their infants born at term remains poorly understood. We investigated the clinical characteristics of preterm and term infants with or without Ureaplasma in their gastric fluid. METHODS: Gast
