Intact bilateral resting-state networks in the absence of the corpus callosum.

Temporal correlations between different brain regions in the resting-state BOLD signal are thought to reflect intrinsic functional brain connectivity (Biswal et al., 1995; Greicius et al., 2003; Fox et al., 2007). The functional networks identified are typically bilaterally distributed across the cerebral hemispheres, show similarity to known white matter connections (Greicius et al., 2009), and are seen even in anesthetized monkeys (Vincent et al., 2007). Yet it remains unclear how they arise. Here we tested two distinct possibilities: (1) functional networks arise largely from structural con

Executive deficits and regional brain metabolism in Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Executive deficits are common in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), contribute prominently to clinical disability, and may be associated with frontal lobe pathology. This study examined regional brain hypometabolism associated with executive dysfunction in patients with AD. METHODS: Forty-one patients with probable AD underwent [(18)F] fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) imaging at rest. Neuropsychological measures of executive control included the Conceptualization (Conc) and Initiation/Perseveration (I/P) subscales of the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale (D

31P-spectroscopy of frontal lobe in schizophrenia: alterations in phospholipid and high-energy phosphate metabolism.

Studies using 31P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) reported on abnormalities in frontal lobe metabolism in schizophrenia. The most consistent findings were a reduction in the resonances of phosphomonoesters (PME) and/or increased phosphodiesters (PDE), which are, respectively, the precursors and the metabolites of membrane phospholipids, thus suggesting an accelerated phospholipid metabolism in the disease. Other studies reported increased high-energy phosphates (ATP-adenosine triphosphate and PCr-phosphocreatine) in schizophrenia, reflecting decreased use of energy in the frontal lobe. W

Lack of effect of methylmercury exposure from birth to adulthood on information processing speed in the monkey.

Although it is established that developmental methylmercury exposure produces severe motor and sensory impairment, the effect on cognitive function is less clear. To explore this issue, monkeys with robust methylmercury-induced deficits in visual, auditory, and somatosensory function were tested on a series of tasks assessing central processing speed, which is highly correlated with intelligence in humans. Five monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were dosed from birth to 7 years of age with 50 micrograms/kg/day of mercury as methylmercuric chloride. Blood mercury levels were stable at 0.8-1.1 microg

Observer sensitivity to retinal vessel diameter and tortuosity in retinopathy of prematurity: a model system.

BACKGROUND: Abnormally increased diameter and tortuosity of retinal blood vessels in the posterior pole, or "plus disease," is recognized as a powerful predictor of poor outcome in eyes with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Although the diagnosis of plus disease depends upon the examiner's ability to examine retinal blood vessels, the ability of the human observer to identify changes in retinal blood vessel diameter and tortuosity accurately has not been studied. METHODS: Using computer-aided analysis of fundus photographs from eyes with a wide range of ROP severity, we generated tracings of

Genetic Etiology and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in Children With Craniosynostosis: A 15-Year Single-Center Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: The traditional distinction between syndromic and nonsyndromic craniosynostosis has guided clinical management, but recent genomic advances suggest these categories represent a continuous spectrum rather than discrete entities. Data on genetic etiologies and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes in Asian populations remain limited. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study of 68 consecutive children diagnosed with craniosynostosis at a single tertiary center between January 2011 and November 2025. Genetic testing included whole-genome/whole-exome sequencing, targ

The diagnostic value of artificial intelligence in differentiating follicular thyroid cancer from follicular thyroid adenoma: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is the second most common thyroid malignancy but is challenging to preoperatively distinguish from follicular adenoma. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as an auxiliary diagnostic tool, yet published studies show variable performance. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the overall diagnostic accuracy of AI in differentiating FTC from benign lesions. METHODS: Literature searches were independently conducted across the PubMed, Embase & Medline (via Embase.com), Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Ovid English medical databases. The diagno

Cognitive processing speed improvement after cochlear implantation.

BACKGROUND: Untreated hearing loss has an effect on cognition. It is hypothesized that the additional processing required to compensate for the sensory loss affects the cognitive resources available for other tasks and that this could be mitigated by a hearing device. METHODS: The impact on cognition of cochlear implants (CIs) was tested in 100 subjects, ≥60 years old, with bilateral moderately-severe to profound post linguistic deafness using hearing aids. Data was compared pre and 12 and 18 months after cochlear implantation for the speech spatial qualities questionnaire, Mini Mental State

Development and validation of an endoscopic images-based deep learning model for detection with nasopharyngeal malignancies.

BACKGROUND: Due to the occult anatomic location of the nasopharynx and frequent presence of adenoid hyperplasia, the positive rate for malignancy identification during biopsy is low, thus leading to delayed or missed diagnosis for nasopharyngeal malignancies upon initial attempt. Here, we aimed to develop an artificial intelligence tool to detect nasopharyngeal malignancies under endoscopic examination based on deep learning. METHODS: An endoscopic images-based nasopharyngeal malignancy detection model (eNPM-DM) consisting of a fully convolutional network based on the inception architecture w

DNA recovery from 3D printed firearms.

Over the last few years, additive manufacturing, by means of fused deposition modelling 3D printing, has become increasingly popular and accessible due to the relative low costs, flexibility, and continually lowering barriers for entry. Unfortunately, while this technology is not only used by hobbyists for creative or practical creation of custom objects using a variety of thermoplastic materials, they can also be used in the manufacture of firearms. From fully printed to hybrid designs, AM/3D printing has been used to produce parts for fully functional firearms capable of discharging conventi

Could artificial intelligence-powered colonoscopies change the future of colorectal cancer screening?

Colorectal cancer is a major cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, underscoring the importance of early and effective colorectal cancer screening to improve survival rates. Traditional colorectal cancer screening methods include non-invasive tests, such as the fecal immunochemical test (FIT), as well as diagnostic procedures like colonoscopy. Colonoscopy remains the gold standard for detecting and treating precancerous polyps and early-stage cancer, regardless of whether it is used as the first screening test or the second test following a positive FIT. However, its effectiveness can be

AI-based multimodal prediction of lymph node metastasis and capsular invasion in cT1N0M0 papillary thyroid carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Accurate preoperative evaluation of cT1N0M0 papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is essential for guiding appropriate treatment strategies. Although ultrasound is widely used for clinical staging, it has limitations in detecting lymph node metastasis (LNM) and capsular invasion (CI), which may lead to misclassification of high-risk patients. Such undetected risks pose safety concerns for those undergoing radiofrequency ablation. This study aimed to develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted predictive model that integrates ultrasound radiomics and deep learning features to impro
