Bacteria in nature can exist in multicellular communities called biofilms. Biofilms also form in the course of many infections. Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections frequently involve biofilms, which contribute materially to the difficulty to treat these infections with antibiotic therapy. Many biofilm-related characteristics are controlled by the second messenger, cyclic-di-GMP, which is upregulated on surface contact. Among these factors is the exopolysaccharide Psl, which is a critically important component of the biofilm matrix. Here, we describe the discovery of a P. aeruginosa bacteriophage

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis remains the third leading cause of infectious disease mortality worldwide. Ocular tuberculosis, though rare, is on the rise, particularly in relation to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In children, this condition presents a diagnostic challenge due to its clinical polymorphism and the frequent absence of lesions that are accessible for histologic examination.
PURPOSE: To study the epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic profiles of ocular tuberculosis in children through a case series.
METHODS: This retrospective study includes 78 cases of ocular tuberculosis in HIV-nega

Acanthamoeba is a free-living ameba, known to most commonly cause amebic keratitis in contact lens users and granulomatous amebic encephalitis in immunocompromised patients. Cutaneous Acanthamoebiasis as a single-organ manifestation is less common. We report two cases seen in our department. Case one is a 23-year-old hospitalized patient with systemic lupus erythematosus and pancytopenia who acutely developed nodules on the extremities. Biopsy showed lymphohistiocytic inflammation and focal coagulative necrosis in the subcutaneous fat. Acanthamoeba trophozoites and cysts were apparent in H&E-s

With increasing concern about the negative health impact of fungal disease, there is a need to survey what is and is not known about the epidemiology of these infections in Tunisia. We have estimated the incidence and prevalence of the most serious fungal diseases in Tunisia for the first time. Using published literature from Tunisia, or if absent other countries, we have estimated the burden of life-threatening fungal infections and those causing significant morbidity, using deterministic modeling, based on populations at greatest risk. An estimated 250,494 (2.12% of the Tunisian population)

The increase in bacterial resistance to antibiotics in recent years demands innovative strategies for the detection and combating of biofilms, which are notoriously resilient. Biofilms, particularly those on contact lenses, can lead to biofilm-related infections (e.g., conjunctivitis and keratitis), posing a significant risk to patients. Non-destructive and non-contact sensing techniques are essential in addressing this threat. Digital holographic tomography emerges as a promising solution. This allows for the 3D reconstruction of the refractive index distribution in biological samples, enabli

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a complex, multisystemic disease and is associated with ocular pathology in 4-12% of patients. In general, ocular disease affects Crohn's patients more frequently than those with ulcerative colitis. Episcleritis and uveitis are the most common presentations, with episcleritis often correlating with IBD flares, whereas uveitis presents independently of IBD activity and, in some cases, may even alert clinicians to a new diagnosis of IBD. Corneal EIMs encompass a range of pathologies, such as the common and benign keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye disease), w

Fungal keratitis is an infectious disease caused by pathogenic fungi with a high blindness rate. Econazole (ECZ) is an imidazole antifungal drug with insoluble ability. Econazole-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (E-SLNs) were prepared by microemulsion method, then modified with positive and negative charge. The mean diameter of cationic E-SLNs, nearly neutral E-SLNs and anionic E-SLNs were 18.73±0.14, 19.05±0.28, 18.54±0.10 nm respectively. The Zeta potential of these different charged SLNs formulations were 19.13±0.89, -2.20±0.10, -27.40±0.67 mV respectively. The Polydispersity Index (PDI) of

Fungal keratitis (FK) is an invasive infection of the cornea primarily associated with Aspergillus and Fusarium species. FK is treated empirically with a limited selection of topical antifungals with varying levels of success. Though clinical infections are typically characterized by a dense network of mature mycelium, traditional models used to test antifungal susceptibility of FK isolates exclusively evaluate susceptibility in fungal cultures derived from asexual spores known as conidia. The purpose of this study was to characterize differences in fungal response when topical antifungal trea

Corneal alkali burns often occur in industrial production and daily life, combined with infection, and may cause severe eye disease. Oxidative stress and neovascularization (NV) are important factors leading to a poor prognosis. URP20 is an antimicrobial peptide that has been proven to treat bacterial keratitis in rats through antibacterial and anti-NV effects. Therefore, in this study, the protective effect and influence mechanism of URP20 were explored in a rat model of alkali burn together with pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) infection. In addition, human um
