How science gets by with a little help from the Beatles: Detecting cultural wordplay in scientific literature using large language models.

The Beatles' cultural influence reaches well beyond music into television, fashion, and global media. As we show, it reaches into scientific publishing too. This study documents how often Beatles song titles and lyrics appear in academic article titles, identifying 2,237 exact references and 963 instances of creative wordplay in data from Scopus. Working from a curated list of Beatles songs and lyrics, we combine automated title queries with large-language-model screening, followed by manual verification, to detect both exact references and wordplay. To our knowledge, this is the first study t

How Uncertainty Is Talked About in Language Discordant and Concordant Health Consultations: Patterns of Epistemic Adverb Use and Communication Accommodation Strategies.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we explored how uncertainty was expressed through epistemic adverbs in health consultations where patients and health practitioners (HPs) spoke the same language (language-concordant) versus when they did not (language-discordant). Further, we applied Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) to identify, in these settings, how HPs used communication strategies and their patients' communicative responses. METHOD: Fifty-three health consultations between bilingual and monolingual patients and their HPs in a metropolitan emergency department were recorded and transcr

Assessing the Limitations of Large Language Models in Clinical Practice Guideline-Concordant Treatment Decision-Making on Real-World Data: Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that large language models (LLMs) are promising in therapeutic decision-making, with findings comparable to those of medical experts, but these studies used highly curated patient data. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine if LLMs can make guideline-concordant treatment decisions based on patient data as typically present in clinical practice (lengthy, unstructured medical text). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 80 patients with severe aortic stenosis who were scheduled for either surgical (SAVR; n=24) or transcatheter aortic valve replacement

RespBERT: A Multi-Site Validation of a Natural Language Processing Algorithm, of Radiology Notes to Identify Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a severe organ dysfunction associated with significant mortality and morbidity among critically ill patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The etiology related to ARDS can be highly heterogeneous, with infection or trauma as the most common associations. The Berlin criteria, the current gold standard for ARDS diagnosis, often necessitates manual adjudication of chest radiographs, limiting automation tools. ARDS diagnosis relies on the presence of bilateral infiltrates on radiographs, which is often not available in Electronic Medical R

Performance of Open-Source Large Language Models in Psychiatry: Usability Study Through Comparative Analysis of Non-English Records and English Translations.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) have emerged as promising tools for addressing global disparities in mental health care. However, cloud-based proprietary models raise concerns about data privacy and limited adaptability to local health care systems. In contrast, open-source LLMs offer several advantages, including enhanced data security, the ability to operate offline in resource-limited settings, and greater adaptability to non-English clinical environments. Nevertheless, their performance in psychiatric applications involving non-English language inputs remains largely unexplored.

External challenges for individuals who need or use AAC who are learning language: lived experiences, key research findings, and future directions.

Language skills are essential to effective communication, but learning language is by no means a simple process for individuals with developmental disabilities who cannot rely on speech alone to be heard and understood. Research demonstrates that augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interventions positively impact development across language domains (e.g., pragmatics, semantics, morphosyntax) and may also benefit speech production. However, these gains can only be realized if people have timely access to effective AAC and have meaningful opportunities to interact with others. This

Leveraging social media and large language models for scalable alcohol risk assessment: Examining validity with AUDIT-C and post recency effects.

Risky alcohol consumption is a major public health concern, yet significant barriers exist to effective screening. The present study examines the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) to infer risky alcohol use from social media text. The unobtrusive nature of this approach could provide a more scalable way to assess alcohol risk in large populations. To this aim, we analyzed Facebook status updates from 208 adults from Italy (mean age = 26.8, 70.7 % female) who also completed the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C), a brief validated self-report measure of risk
