A FURTHER PATIENT OF PURE 15q DELETION: CLINICAL AND MOLECULAR CYTOGENETIC FINDINGS.

A deletion of the distal long arm of chromosome 15 is generally reported with the formation of ring chromosome 15, whereas an isolated 15q deletion is rarely described. Here we report an 11 year-old girl, from non-consanguineous parents, who was referred to the Pediatric Genetics Department with growth retardation and multiple congenital abnormalities. In her medical history, she had a cleft palate, hip dislocation and crossed renal ectopia. Dysmorphological evaluation revealed a triangular face, low-set ears, fissured cleft tongue, micrognathia, proximally placed hypoplastic thumbs, genu valg

Validity of the Child Facial Coding System for the Assessment of Acute Pain in Children With Cerebral Palsy.

The purpose of the current study was to examine the concurrent and discriminant validity of the Child Facial Coding System for children with cerebral palsy. Eighty-five children (mean = 8.35 years, SD = 4.72 years) were videotaped during a passive joint stretch with their physiotherapist and during 3 time segments: baseline, passive joint stretch, and recovery. Children's pain responses were rated from videotape using the Numerical Rating Scale and Child Facial Coding System. Results indicated that Child Facial Coding System scores during the passive joint stretch significantly correlated with

Rolandic epilepsy and dyslexia.

OBJECTIVE: Although benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) is an idiopathic, age-related epilepsy syndrome with favorable outcome, recent studies have shown impairment in specific neuropsychological tests. The objective of this study was to analyze the comorbidity between dyslexia and BECTS. METHOD: Thirty-one patients with clinical and electroencephalographic diagnosis of BECTS (group A) and 31 paired children (group B) underwent a language and neuropsychological assessment performed with several standardized protocols. Our findings were categorized as: a) dyslexia; b) other diff

Impaired laryngeal voice production in a patient with foreign accent syndrome.

We report a Japanese-speaking monolingual woman who developed foreign accent syndrome (FAS) following an infarction in the precentral and premotor cortices (Brodmann Area 6) at and around the inferior frontal sulcus. Her speech sounded Chinese or Korean to our bilingual coauthor who speaks Chinese and Japanese. Quantitative acoustic analyses of words and sentences showed that pitch (fundamental frequency variation) and intensity variances appeared lowered and fully voiced glottal pulses were reduced. These findings suggest laryngeal dysfunction that contributes to the unusual speech production

Agenesis of the corpus callosum and autism: a comprehensive comparison.

The corpus callosum, with its ∼200 million axons, remains enigmatic in its contribution to cognition and behaviour. Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a congenital condition in which the corpus callosum fails to develop; such individuals exhibit localized deficits in non-literal language comprehension, humour, theory of mind and social reasoning. These findings together with parent reports suggest that behavioural and cognitive impairments in subjects with callosal agenesis may overlap with the profile of autism spectrum disorders, particularly with respect to impairments in social interaction

Autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorders are being diagnosed with increasing frequency. The likelihood that a primary care provider will see a patient with autism spectrum disorder in their clinic is high. In this article, current diagnostic criteria and expected changes in DSM criteria, as well as prevalence rates and epidemiologic studies are reviewed. Recommendations for screening, including early warning signs, and best practices for diagnosis are discussed. Comprehensive evidence based intervention for ASD as well as the findings of the National Standards Project are reviewed. Medication management is a

Somatic overgrowth predisposes to seizures in autism spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity of Autism Spectrum Disorders with seizures or abnormal EEG (Autism-Epilepsy Phenotype) suggests shared pathomechanisms, and might be a starting point to identify distinct populations within the clinical complexity of the autistic spectrum. In this study, we tried to assess whether distinct subgroups, having distinctive clinical hallmarks, emerge from this comorbid condition. METHODS: Two-hundred and six individuals with idiopathic Autism Spectrum Disorders were subgrouped into three experimental classes depending on the presence of seizures and EEG abnormalities. Neuro

Heterocentric language in commonly used measures of social anxiety: recommended alternate wording.

A number of self-report measures of social anxiety contain language that appears to assume heterosexuality. It is unclear how such items should be answered by individuals who are not exclusively heterosexual, which may lead to inaccurate measurement of symptoms, perpetuation of stigma, and alienation of respondents. More specific wording could improve measurement accuracy for sexual minorities as well as heterosexual respondents. Gender-neutral wording was developed for items containing the phrase "opposite sex" in commonly used self-report measures of social anxiety (Interaction Anxiousness S

Acquired apraxia of speech: the effects of repeated practice and rate/rhythm control treatments on sound production accuracy.

PURPOSE: This investigation was designed to elucidate the effects of repeated practice treatment on sound production accuracy in individuals with apraxia of speech (AOS) and aphasia. A secondary purpose was to determine if the addition of rate/rhythm control to treatment provided further benefits beyond those achieved with repeated practice. METHOD: A single-subject design was employed with 10 speakers with chronic AOS and aphasia. Articulation accuracy served as the dependent measure. Participants received repeated practice treatment until a plateau in performance was observed or high levels

Visual search deficits are independent of magnocellular deficits in dyslexia.

The aim of this study was to investigate the theory that visual magnocellular deficits seen in groups with dyslexia are linked to reading via the mechanisms of visual attention. Visual attention was measured with a serial search task and magnocellular function with a coherent motion task. A large group of children with dyslexia (n = 70) had slower serial search times than a control group of typical readers. However, the effect size was small (η(p)(2)  = 0.05) indicating considerable overlap between the groups. When the dyslexia sample was split into those with or without a magnocellular defici

Implicit phonological and semantic processing in children with developmental dyslexia: evidence from event-related potentials.

Dyslexia is characterized by a core phonological deficit, although recent studies indicate that semantic impairment also contributes to this condition. In this study, event-related potentials (ERP) were used to examine whether the N400 wave in dyslexic children is modulated by phonological or semantic priming, similarly to age-matched controls. ERPs were recorded while children listened to word lists in which the semantic and phonological congruency of the terminal words were manipulated. No overt judgments were made by participants. In control children the N400 amplitude to both semantically

Reading in French-speaking adults with dyslexia.

This study investigated the reading and reading-related skills of 15 French-speaking adults with dyslexia, whose performance was compared with that of chronological-age controls (CA) and reading-level controls (RL). Experiment 1 assessed the efficiency of their phonological reading-related skills (phonemic awareness, phonological short-term memory, and rapid automatic naming (RAN)) and experiment 2 assessed the efficiency of their lexical and sublexical (or phonological) reading procedures (reading aloud of pseudowords and irregular words of different lengths). Experiment 1 revealed that adult

Cognitive change in patients with Huntington disease on the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status.

Huntington disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with cognitive, motor, and psychiatric deterioration over time. Although there is currently no cure for HD, there has been a surge of clinical trials available to patients with HD over the past 5 years. However, cognitive measures have generally been lacking from these trials. A brief, repeatable neuropsychological battery is needed to assess cognitive endpoints. The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) may be useful for assessing change in interventional studies or for clinical monitoring.

Central and peripheral agraphia in Alzheimer's disease: from the case of Auguste D. to a cognitive neuropsychology approach.

Since the observation of Auguste D. by Alöis Alzheimer, it is an acknowledged fact that writing is one of the cognitive functions that are weakened early in Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aimed to examine the cognitive nature of this disorder and question the hypothesis of a standard progression (Platel et al., 1993) from lexical to other central and more peripheral processes. A large group of mild to moderate AD patients (n=59) and a group of healthy elderly controls were submitted to an extensive assessment of both the central and peripheral components of writing. A comparison of group

Cultural competency and recovery within diverse populations.

Recovery for diverse populations with mental health problems includes communities of color, those with limited English proficiency and individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). The process of healing and recovery must take into consideration the critical role of culture and language and look at the individual within the context of an environment that is influenced by racism, sexism, colonization, homophobia, and poverty as well as the stigma and shame associated with having a mental illness. Recovery must assess the impact of isolation brought about by cultural and lang

Using neuropsychological profiles to classify neglected children with or without physical abuse.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is twofold: First, to investigate whether cognitive functions can contribute to differentiating neglected children with or without physical abuse compared to comparison participants; second, to demonstrate the detrimental impact of children being victimized by a combination of different types of maltreatment. METHODOLOGY: Seventy-nine children aged 6-12 years and currently receiving Child Protection Services because of one of two types of maltreatment (neglect with physical abuse, n=56; neglect without physical abuse, n=28) were compared with a control group o

Mental health screening of preschool children: validity and reliability of ABLE.

Children with behavioral, emotional or language problems struggle to do well at school often with limited success. ABLE (Attention, Behavior, Language, and Emotions), a new screening tool, was used to estimate the prevalence and the severity of concerns parents and teachers have about children's school adjustment and evaluate their need for services. Data obtained from the parents and teachers of children randomly selected from public Pre-K classrooms in 6 states (N = 415) and from a mental health screening of rural and urban children (N = 5,577) support the validity and reliability of ABLE.
