A total of 84 women with normal pregnancy and those with threatened abortions were examined, as were 28 healthy nonpregnant women, to estimate the function of the thymus. The findings evidence enhancement of the endocrine function of the thymus in pregnancy, this function being assessed from the thymic serum factor titer. Six patients with acute renal failure, in five cases due to acute crescentic glomerulonephritis and in one case due to total bilateral renal cortical necrosis, were studied. A guinea pig model was developed to document the association of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) decrease with pulmonary leakage after a sublethal infusion of endotoxin (LPS Escherichia coli 0111:B4, 5 micrograms/min/kg). The results of examination of 15 patients with autoimmune and subacute thyroiditis are analyzed. T-cellular immunity parameters have been examined, i.e. total T-lymphocytes, T-suppressors, T-helpers, killers. The study has revealed a reduction of the total T-lymphocyte count and a shifted ratio of the T-lymphocyte subpopulations, these changes being more manifest in autoimmune thyroiditis. T-activin++ therapy resulted in a manifest tendency to normalization of the counts of T-lymphocytes and their subpopulations.

Studies performed in the last decade have shown the importance of zinc in human physiology particularly in cell mediated immunity. Blood zinc values were assayed with the atomic absorption method using a Perkin/Elmer 2.380 spectrophotometer in 35 Down's syndrome subjects (DS) (16 boys and 19 girls aged 6 months 20 years) and in normal subjects in good health.
