Supporting claustrophobic patients during magnetic resonance imaging examination- the radiographer perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Some patients cannot complete their magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations because of claustrophobia. Evidence showed that supportive instruction is an effective intervention used to assist claustrophobic patients in MRI. However, the effectiveness of this intervention depends on the experience and education level of the MRI radiographer. This study aimed to understand the views of MRI radiographers on supporting claustrophobic patients and develop a guide to improve the effectiveness of the intervention. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive approach utilising focus group d

Unresolved Issues Associated with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Treatment of Chronic Tinnitus.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been investigated as a potential treatment for chronic tinnitus for 20 years. Numerous studies have reported that repetitive TMS (rTMS) has demonstrated efficacy for reducing the severity of tinnitus and its associated co-conditions such as depression, anxiety, and insomnia. However, some researchers have reported that active rTMS is no more effective than sham (placebo) rTMS as a tinnitus treatment method. There are numerous unresolved issues in this field that need to be addressed before rTMS can become a viable treatment for tinnitus. These issues

Facile and selective separation of anthraquinones by alizarin-modified iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles.

Anthraquinones are widely distributed in higher plants and possess broad biological activities. The conventional separation procedures for isolating anthraquinones from the plant crude extracts require multiple extraction, concentration, and column chromatography steps. In this study, we synthesized three alizarin (AZ)-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@AZ, Fe3O4@SiO2-AZ, and Fe3O4@SiO2-PEI-AZ) by thermal solubilization method. Fe3O4@SiO2-PEI-AZ showed strong magnetic responsiveness, high methanol/water dispersion, good recyclability, and high loading capacity for anthraquinones. To evaluate

Site-Specific Modification of Single Domain Antibodies by Enzyme-Immobilized Magnetic Beads.

Nanobodies as imaging agents and drug conjugates have shown great potential for cancer diagnostics and therapeutics. However, site-specific modification of a nanobody with microbial transglutaminase (mTGase) encounters problems in protein separation and purification. Here, we describe a facile yet reliable strategy of immobilizing mTGase onto magnetic beads for site-specific nanobody modification. The mTGase immobilized on magnetic beads (MB-mTGase) exhibits catalytic activity nearly equivalent to that of the free mTGase, with good reusability and universality. Magnetic separation simplifies t

Design of a Magnetic Soft Inchworm Millirobot Based on Pre-Strained Elastomer with Micropillars.

Rather than using longitudinal "muscle" as in biological inchworm, the existing magnetic active elastomer (MAE)-based inchworm robots utilize magnetic torque to pull and push the soft body, which hinders its locomotion mobility. In this paper, a new pre-strained MAE inchworm millirobot with micropillars is proposed. The pre-strained elastomer serves as a pre-load muscle to contract the soft body, and the micropillars act as tiny feet to anchor the body during the locomotion. The proposed magnetic inchworm robot features a simple fabrication process that does not require special magnetization e

Assessing the risk of magnetic interaction between auditory implants and programmable ventriculoperitoneal shunts.

PURPOSE: This study investigated whether the magnetic field of the internal magnet of cochlear implants and bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHA) would be sufficient to affect a programmable ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt. Current guidelines suggest against implanting these hearing devices ipsilateral to a programmable VP shunt, but the exact nature of the interaction has not been quantified. METHODS: The magnetic field strength (mT) was measured at 0 and 10 mm from the edge of both the Cochlear Implant CI512 (Cochlear Corporation) magnet and BAHA Attract magnet. Next, the hearing devices were p

Assessment of white matter hyperintensity severity using multimodal magnetic resonance imaging.

White matter hyperintensities are radiological abnormalities reflecting cerebrovascular dysfunction detectable using MRI. White matter hyperintensities are often present in individuals at the later stages of the lifespan and in prodromal stages in the Alzheimer's disease spectrum. Tissue alterations underlying white matter hyperintensities may include demyelination, inflammation and oedema, but these are highly variable by neuroanatomical location and between individuals. There is a crucial need to characterize these white matter hyperintensity tissue alterations in vivo to improve prognosis a

Optimal preparation of a core-shell structural magnetic nanoadsorbent for efficient tetracycline removal.

As emerging contaminants, tetracyclines pose a severe threat to aquatic environments and human health. Therefore, developing efficient approaches to remove tetracyclines from water has attracted a large amount of interest. Herein, a novel core-shell structural magnetic nanoadsorbent (FSMAS) was facilely prepared by graft copolymerization of acrylamide (AM) and sodium p-styrene sulfonate (SSS) monomers on the surface of vinyl-modified Fe3O4@SiO2 (FSM). From single factor experiments, the optimal graft copolymerization conditions were concluded to be the following: initiator concentration = 1.2‰
