Upper bill bending as an adaptation for nectar feeding in hummingbirds.

Observations of maxillary (upper bill) bending in hummingbirds have been considered an optical illusion, yet a recent description of out-of-phase opening and closing between their bill base and tip suggests a genuine capacity for bill bending. We investigate bill kinematics during nectar feeding in six species of hummingbirds. We employed geometric morphometrics to identify bending zones and combined these data with measurements of bill flexural rigidity from micro-computed tomography scans to better understand the flexing mechanism. We found that the mandible remains in place throughout the l

Leukemia and Lymphoma Mimicking Periapical Conditions Resulting in Endodontic Treatment: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Leukemia and lymphoma mimicking periapical conditions can lead to significant diagnostic pitfalls. Guidance for endodontists in managing such cases is barely explored. This systematic review aimed to summarize the clinicopathologic, imaging, and management aspects of leukemia/lymphoma that mimicked periapical conditions and resulted in endodontic treatment. METHODS: Searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and LILACS, supplemented by manual scrutiny and gray literature. Case reports and/or case series were included. Critical appraisal of the studies was

An Unusual Case of Sinusitis in a Flight Attendant.

Foreign body sinusitis is a rare but important condition that should be taken into account when considering differential diagnoses. In this case report, we present a unique case of sinusitis caused by a foreign body originating from a dental procedure. Additionally, the complexity of the case was compounded by the patient's occupation as a flight attendant. A 49-year-old female flight attendant presented with a two-month history of facial pressure exacerbated by flying. A computed tomography (CT) of her paranasal sinuses confirmed the presence of a radiopaque foreign body near the left maxilla

Patterns of tooth agenesis in individuals with Down syndrome: A secondary analysis using the Tooth Agenesis Code.

AIMS: Tooth agenesis (TA) is common in Down syndrome (DS). It is unknown whether this agenesis occurs in specific patterns, which is important regarding treatment planning and aetiological research. This study aimed to aggregate and analyze patterns of TA, excluding third molars, in individuals with DS using the tooth agenesis code (TAC). METHODS AND RESULTS: The study was designed as a secondary analysis, following STROSA guidelines. The search (MEDLINE-PubMed) and selection process resulted in six included studies encompassing 241 individuals with DS. TA data were systematically converted i

Chronic paternal alcohol exposures induce dose-dependent changes in offspring craniofacial shape and symmetry.

Although dose-response analyses are a fundamental tool in developmental toxicology, few studies have examined the impacts of toxicant dose on the non-genetic paternal inheritance of offspring disease and dysgenesis. In this study, we used geometric morphometric analyses to examine the impacts of different levels of preconception paternal alcohol exposure on offspring craniofacial shape and symmetry in a mouse model. Procrustes ANOVA followed by canonical variant analysis of geometric facial relationships revealed that Low-, Medium-, and High-dose treatments each induced distinct changes in cra

Osteogenic Sarcoma of the Head and Neck: Is Chemotherapy Needed?

Head and neck osteosarcoma (HNOS) is a rare subtype of sarcoma that most commonly arises in the mandible or maxilla. Treatment for HNOS typically involves a multidisciplinary and multimodal approach depending on the size, grade, and histological subtype. Surgery by sarcoma-experienced head and neck surgeons and orthopedic oncologists remains a crucial component of treatment in all subtypes of HNOS, particularly for those with low-grade histology, which can be treated definitively with surgical resection if negative margins are obtained. Negative surgical margins are of utmost prognostic import

Influence of Nutrition and Physical Activity on Local and Systemic Inflammatory Signs in Experimentally Induced Gingivitis.

Although numerous studies have been published investigating the relationship between various dietary components and inflammatory periodontal disease, it has not yet been possible to clearly distinguish between periodontally healthy and unhealthy diets. This clinical study aimed to assess the association of specific food ingredients and physical activity on local and systemic inflammatory signs in experimentally induced gingivitis. Thirty-nine non-smoking periodontally healthy volunteers (mean age 23.2 ± 3.8 years) refrained from oral hygiene in the right maxilla for 21 days to induce an experi

What to Expect of Feeding Abilities and Nutritional Aspects in Achondroplasia Patients: A Narrative Review.

Achondroplasia is an autosomal dominant genetic disease representing the most common form of human skeletal dysplasia: almost all individuals with achondroplasia have identifiable mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor type 3 (FGFR3) gene. The cardinal features of this condition and its inheritance have been well-established, but the occurrence of feeding and nutritional complications has received little prominence. In infancy, the presence of floppiness and neurological injury due to foramen magnum stenosis may impair the feeding function of a newborn with achondroplasia. Along wi
