Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a pervasive perinatal pathogen, yet factors driving GBS dissemination in utero are poorly defined. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a complication marked by dysregulated immunity and maternal microbial dysbiosis, increases risk for GBS perinatal disease. Using a murine GDM model of GBS colonization and perinatal transmission, we find that GDM mice display greater GBS in utero dissemination and subsequently worse neonatal outcomes. Dual-RNA sequencing reveals differential GBS adaptation to the GDM reproductive tract, including a putative glycosyltransferase (y

BACKGROUND: Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is very common worldwide, and alcohol consumption is a notable contributing factor. Researches have shown that gut microbiota can be influenced by alcohol consumption and is an important mediator in regulating Th17 cell immunity. However, it is still unclear the exact mechanism by which alcohol exacerbates the CP/CPPS and the role of gut microbiota in this process.
METHOD: We first constructed the most-commonly used animal model for CP/CPPS, the experimental autoimmune prostatitis (EAP) model, through immunoassay. Based on

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex and poorly understood disorder characterized by chronic and widespread musculoskeletal pain, of which the etiology remains unknown. Now, the disorder of the gut microbiome is considered as one of the main causes of FM. This study aimed to investigate the potential benefits of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in patients with FM. A total of 45 patients completed this open-label, randomized, nonplacebo-controlled clinical study. The numerical rating scale scores in the FMT group were slightly lower than the control group at 1 month (P > .05), and they decreas

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease that can cause severe pain, motor dysfunction, and even disability. A growing body of research indicates that gut microbiota and their associated metabolites are key players in maintaining bone health and in the progression of OA. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are a series of active metabolites that widely participate in bone homeostasis. Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) with outstanding anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, have been demonstrated to ameliorate excessive bone loss during the progression of osteoporosis (OP) and r

Previous studies have suggested a potential association between the gut microbiota and arthritis. However, the causal links between the gut microbiota and various types of arthritis, as well as the potential mediating role of inflammatory proteins, remain unclear. Mendelian randomization was used to explore the causal relationships between gut microbiota, inflammatory proteins, and various forms of arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis [AS]). The inverse variance-weighted method was the primary analytical approach used. Furthermore, we examin

Background: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory and autoimmune disease that primarily affects the sacroiliac joints and axial skeleton. While the exact pathogenetic mechanism of AS remains unclear, previous reports have highlighted the involvement of genetic factors, immune responses, and gut microbiota dysregulation in the development of this condition. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are microbial fermentation products derived from sugar, protein, and dietary fibers, play a role in maintaining the intestinal barrier function and reducing inflammatory responses. Chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (F-53B), a substitute of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), has attracted significant attention for its link to hepatotoxicity and enterotoxicity. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms of F-53B-induced enterohepatic toxicity remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to explore the role of F-53B exposure on enterohepatic injury based on the gut microbiota, pathological and molecular analysis in mice. Here, we exposed C57BL/6 mice to F-53B (0, 4, 40, and 400 μg/L) for 28 days. Our findings revealed a significant accumulation of F-53B in the

Persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can lead to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer, posing serious threats to the health of women. Although the cervicovaginal microbiota is strongly associated with CIN, the dynamics of the microbiota during CIN development are unknown. In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed 3-year longitudinal data from 72 patients diagnosed with a persistent HPV infection almost all caused by high-risk HPV types. Patients were categorized into groups with HPV persistent infection (n = 37), progression to CIN (n = 16), and CIN reg

Egg-laying is an important trait in chickens, and it is affected by many factors, such as hormones regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary axis and precursors synthesized by the liver. Recent studies showed that gut microbiota was associated with egg-laying, however, its underlying mechanism remains unclear. We comprehensively analyzed the host transcriptome, gut microbiota, and metabolome in broiler breeder hens during the pre-laying, peak-laying, and late-laying periods. The transcriptome analysis of the tissues related to the hypothalamic-pituitary-liver (HPL) axis revealed dynamic gene exp

Composed of over 1200 species of anaerobes and aerobes bacteria along with bacteriophages, viruses, and fungal species, the human gut microbiota (GM) is vital to health, including digestive equilibrium, immunologic, hormonal, and metabolic homeostasis. Micronutrients, usually refer to trace elements (copper, iodine, iron, selenium, zinc) and vitamins (A, C, D, E), interact with the GM to influence host immune metabolism. So far, microbiome studies have revealed an association between disturbances in the microbiota and various pathological disorders, such as anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (

Carbohydrate intolerance, commonly linked to the consumption of lactose, fructose, or sorbitol, affects up to 30% of the population in high-income countries. Although sorbitol intolerance is attributed to malabsorption, the underlying mechanism remains unresolved. Here, we show that a history of antibiotic exposure combined with high fat intake triggered long-lasting sorbitol intolerance in mice by reducing Clostridia abundance, which impaired microbial sorbitol catabolism. The restoration of sorbitol catabolism by inoculation with probiotic Escherichia coli protected mice against sorbitol int

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major human pathogen that causes various diseases. Extensive researches highlight the significant role of gut microbiota and its metabolites, particularly spermidine, in infectious diseases. However, the immunomodulatory mechanisms of spermidine in MRSA-induced bloodstream infection remain unclear. Here, we confirmed the protective effects of spermidine in bloodstream infection in mice. Spermidine reduced the bacterial load and expression of inflammatory factors by shifting the macrophage phenotype to an anti-inflammatory phenotype, ultim

SCOPE: Systemic heat stress (or heatstroke; HS) induces germ cell death and spermatogenesis disorders in men and male mammals. Also, it affects the immune environment of the circulatory system promoting gut inflammation and intestinal permeability, leading to pathogenic infection. In this study, the crosstalk between the gut and testis (gut-testis axis) under HS is explored, by examining the effects of intestinal immune status on the health of the male reproductive system in mice.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A mouse model of systemic heat stress is established to investigate the effect of probiotics

BACKGROUND: Gamma-delta (γδ) T cells are a major cell population in the intestinal mucosa and are key mediators of mucosal tolerance and microbiota composition. Little is known about the mechanisms by which intestinal γδ T cells interact with the gut microbiota to maintain tolerance.
RESULTS: We found that antibiotic treatment impaired oral tolerance and depleted intestinal γδ T cells, suggesting that the gut microbiota is necessary to maintain γδ T cells. We also found that mice deficient for γδ T cells (γδ-/-) had an altered microbiota composition that led to small intestine (SI) immune dys
