Self-Driven Drug Release Dual-Layer Dressing Composed of Electrospun Membrane and Hydrogel with Dynamic Structure Based on Piezoelectricity Transformation and Electrical Responsiveness.

This study reports the development of an intelligent dual-layer wound dressing engineered to achieve active wound repair. The self-standing dressing integrates a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric electrospun membrane with a multifunctional hydrogel based on interfacial fusion. The PVDF layer converted mechanical energy derived from human body movement into electrical stimulation, which dramatically motivated the controlled release of diclofenac sodium (DFs) encapsulated in the hydrogel. The relatively small diameter fibers and network caused strong connection with the hydrogel and s

FLAME: a model for duration-dependent risk accumulation in episodic temporal exposures.

Emerging technologies enable continuous monitoring of temporal exposures to disease risk factors, leading to complex exposure processes characterized by subject-specific numbers and durations of exposure episodes. A key scientific question is how the number and duration of such episodes influence disease risk. Existing methods typically rely on scalar summaries or time-indexed representations and are not naturally suited to model duration-dependent risk accumulation at the episode level. We introduce the FLexible Accumulation ModEl (FLAME), a semiparametric model for risk accumulation at the l

Play to move: A mixed-methods prospective observational study of exergaming versus traditional exercise interventions in children with Down syndrome.

ObjectiveChildren with Down syndrome often face challenges associated with physical activity engagement and motor skill development. This study examined the effectiveness of an augmented reality exergaming application compared with that of traditional paper-based exercise recommendations for promoting physical activity in children with Down syndrome.MethodsUsing a mixed-methods design, this prospective, observational study investigated the experiences of participants in a 6-week exercise intervention by comparing the effectiveness of an exergaming application (n = 3) with the provision of a pa

Parafascicular thalamus recruits motor and autonomic responses.

The parafascicular nucleus (Pf), part of the intralaminar thalamic nuclei, has been implicated in diverse functions such as attention, nociception, and behavioral flexibility, yet its precise contributions to behavior remain poorly defined. In this study, we used optogenetics to study the role of Pf projection neurons using high-resolution and continuous measures to quantify both skeletomotor and autonomic behavioral outputs, as well as motivational valence. Using optogenetic stimulation of Vglut2+ Pf neurons in male and female mice, combined with high-resolution tracking of movement kinematic

Phys-AbGAT: a physics-informed multi-task graph attention network for robust antibody-antigen binding affinity prediction.

MOTIVATION: Accurate prediction of antibody-antigen binding affinity is essential for therapeutic antibody design. Existing methods often model the dissociation constant (KD) and Gibbs free energy (ΔG) independently, overlooking their thermodynamic relationship and complex paratope-epitope spatial interactions. RESULTS: We introduce Phys-AbGAT, a physics-informed multi-task graph attention network that represents the antibody-antigen interface as a spatial graph. It integrates ESM2 evolutionary embeddings with radial basis functions and employs a thermodynamically motivated auxiliary loss to

When Future Focus Hinders Rest: Temporal Focus, Perceived Involution, and Rest Intolerance Among Chinese University Students.

Rest intolerance-the difficulty of truly relaxing during rest, accompanied by guilt and anxiety-is increasingly prevalent among university students, yet its attentional antecedents remain poorly understood. Drawing on motivational conflict theory, this research examined temporal focus as a correlate of rest intolerance and perceived involution as a boundary condition. Study 1, a cross-sectional survey of 290 Chinese university students, found that trait future temporal focus was positively associated with rest intolerance, whereas present temporal focus was negatively associated with it, with

Changing definitions of disease: Transformations in the diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Whether Alzheimer's disease (AD) should be defined by symptoms, biological processes, or both, is a matter of debate. We aim to reconstruct the motivations, aims, and content of consecutive versions of AD diagnostic criteria. METHODS: We systematically analyzed publications on AD diagnostic criteria between 1984 and 2024. RESULTS: Early diagnosis and incorporating recent scientific findings are recurring aims for criteria revisions but aims and motivations for revising are often unclear or ambiguous and reflection on previous criteria is lacking. The subsequent criteria, except

"Rationality" enhancement through anodal tDCS over the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex.

Experimental findings challenge classical economic theories by demonstrating that people are not solely self-interested but also have social preferences, such as fairness and reciprocity, that often conflict with self-interest motives. An ongoing debate examines whether social preferences arise automatically (requiring deliberate actions to ensure economic self-interest) or require cognitive control (implying that self-interest is the default motive and must be inhibited). Two distinct cognitive-control brain regions, each with potentially unique inhibitory functions, have been implicated in m

Endless Scrolling: Predictors of Procrastinatory Short-Form Video Use and Its Effects on Stress and Sleep.

Unhealthy social media habits may foster procrastination, leading to negative psychological and behavioral outcomes. The rising prevalence of procrastinatory short-form video (SFV) use (e.g., on TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts) highlights the need to better understand how established predictors of problematic media use operate in this emerging media environment. To address this gap, this study investigated the motivational factors underlying procrastinatory SFV use and its relationship with user well-being. Using an online survey of college students (N = 549) from two U.S. universities

Barriers and Enablers for Physical Activity in Culturally Deaf Adults: A Qualitative Thematic Analysis.

Purpose: Physical activity (PA) is vital for everyone's health and wellbeing; however, there is, a paucity of research amongst culturally deaf adults. Especially, to understand the needs of deaf adults and how to get them involved in shaping interventions that would help deaf people to be physically active. The current study aimed to explore barriers and facilitators for engaging in PA amongst deaf adults. Method: Focus groups involving nine culturally deaf adults communicating using British sign language were conducted and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Findings: Barriers includi

Patient perceptions of persistent symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury and their influence on mental health treatment-seeking: a grounded theory study.

PURPOSE: Mental health conditions after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are common and can complicate injury outcomes, but are under-treated. According to the Common Sense Model of Self-Regulation, the way patients perceive their health conditions can influence the way they manage them, including if, when, and how they seek treatment. This study explored how individuals perceive persistent symptoms after mTBI, in order to develop a grounded theory about what motivates and demotivates them to seek mental health treatment after their injury. METHODS: Seventeen adults experiencing persistent

Ten myths of back pain in older adults that can lead to ineffective and harmful care.

Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most disabling conditions in older adults and among the costliest in terms of healthcare expenditures. Many factors contribute to the disability and high costs of LBP in older adults, but one of the most preventable is the spread of misinformation and unhelpful attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. These are often perpetuated by family, friends, social media, pharmaceutical companies, other industries, and healthcare providers. Myths about back pain foster false attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that lead to inappropriate, costly, and sometimes harmful treatments

Development of a brief telehealth-delivered counseling intervention to reduce suicide risk and improve HIV care engagement in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.

Death by suicide is common among people living with HIV (PLWH) in Tanzania, and is strongly influenced by HIV stigma, lack of social support, and HIV-associated stress. Screening and intervention strategies for reducing suicidality, however, are not incorporated into standard HIV care. This study describes the development of a brief, nurse-led telehealth counseling intervention to address suicidal IDeation through HIV Education and counseling, advancing treatment Adherence, and reducing Stigma for renewed Hope (IDEAS for Hope) among PLWH in Tanzania. The three intervention sessions are based o

Activity of Antibacterial/Antifungal Compounds against the Protozoan Parasite, Toxoplasma gondii.

We investigated the antiparasitic activity of several antimicrobial drug leads against Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites and, in one case, bradyzoites. Carbazole and phenylthiazole aminoguanidine anti-infectives, originally developed as antibacterial and antifungal agents, showed potent activity, with IC50 values as low as 2 μM. This potency was comparable to that observed with the tuberculosis drug candidate SQ109 and a series of its analogs. Notably, SQ109 also significantly reduced the viability of in vivo-derived bradyzoites. All compounds acted, at least in part, as protonophore uncouplers by

[Safe discontinuation of psychotropic drugs in older people? : New evidence and practical approach].

BACKGROUND: Many older patients are permanently prescribed one or more psychotropic drugs for treatment of symptoms, such as behavioral and psychological symptoms in dementia, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and insomnia. They therefore contribute to the risk of polypharmacy. Recently, deprescribing studies have been published in order to clarify if inadequate medications can be safely discontinued. This mini-review summarizes the study results and derives practical recommendations for routine use. METHOD: A literature search was carried out in PubMed for clinical studies on deprescribing in as

Assessment of the relationship between disease progression and goals of care by individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and their caregivers.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Most patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in the US are diagnosed at about age 5 years. Some adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with DMD are now living into their fourth decade, yet AYAs and caregivers are frequently unprepared to address changes in goals of care due to disease progression. The hypothesis-generating research question was how AYAs with DMD and their caregivers understand the relationship between physical changes and the need to change goals of care. METHODS: Grounded theory design using data from N = 30 semi-structured interviews (n = 13 AYA; n =
