Desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma and astrocytoma: A narrative review of the literature.

Desmoplastic Infantile Astrocytoma (DIA) and Desmoplastic infantile Ganglioglioma (DIG) are rare World Health Organization (WHO) Grade 1 brain neoplasms that primarily affect children under two years of age. They consist of both neuronal and glial elements, and although the prognosis is favorable, some of these neoplasms may exhibit malignant biological behavior. We performed an updated narrative review to study this rare neoplasm's epidemiology, clinical features, treatment, and patients' prognosis. Relevant articles were retrieved by searching PubMed/Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval

Real-life evaluation of the effectiveness of biologics for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps in Europe: a Delphi study to define key variables for the INVENT registry.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a persistent inflammatory condition often associated with type 2 inflammation. While biologics are a promising treatment for patients with uncontrolled CRSwNP, real-world evidence is needed to optimize their use. The InternatioNal seVerE CRSwNP (INVENT) registry aims to consolidate data on biologic use in CRSwNP from local and national registries. This study describes the identification of mandatory and optional variables for inclusion in the INVENT registry using a modified Delphi process. METHODS: A narrative literature review

Vertical Transmission of Hepatitis B and C-Then and Now-A Comprehensive Literature Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: According to a WHO global hepatitis report, the global prevalence of hepatitis B in 2022 was 254 million and for hepatitis C it was 50 million. The estimated number of people newly infected by viral hepatitis declined from 3 million in 2019 to 2.2 million in 2022. Of these, 1.2 million are hepatitis B infections and nearly 1.0 million are hepatitis C infections. Regarding vertical transmission, it is estimated that 4 to 5 million children are infected worldwide every year from HBV-positive mothers. The United States declared that hepatitis C is the commonest chronic blood-borne inf

Immune response to viscerotropic Leishmania: a comprehensive review.

L. donovani and L. infantum infections are associated with a broad clinical spectrum, ranging from asymptomatic cases to visceral leishmaniasis (VL) with high mortality rates. Clinical manifestations such as post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) and visceral leishmaniasis-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis-mimic (VL-associated HLH-mimic) further contribute to the diversity of clinical manifestations. These clinical variations are intricately influenced by the complex interplay between the host's immune response and the parasite's escape mechanisms. This narrative review aims to

Management of Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS) Following Resection for Rectal Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: A total of 60-80% of patients undergoing rectal resection (mostly as a treatment for rectal cancer) suffer from a variety of partly severe functional problems despite preservation of the anal sphincter. These patients are summarized under the term low anterior resection syndrome (LARS). Preoperative radiotherapy, vascular dissection and surgical excision of the low rectum and mesorectum lead, alone or all together, to a significant impairment of colonic and (neo-) rectal motility. This results in a variety of symptoms (multiple defecation episodes, recurrent episodes of urge, clu

Growth Hormone Injection Log Analysis with Electronic Injection Device for Qualifying Adherence to Low-Irritant Formulation and Exploring Influential Factors on Adherence.

INTRODUCTION: Although the treatment success of long-term growth hormone therapy (GHT) is dependent on maintaining patients' adherence to treatment, marked variations in adherence levels among children with GHT (eg, 7-71% nonadherence) have been reported. Barriers to or promoters of GHT adherence have been discussed and investigated, and digital health technologies, such as electronic GH injection devices, may have the potential to assess adherence to GHT more accurately. Thus, we conducted a multicenter, retrospective cohort study using GH injection log analysis of an electronic GH device, GR

Targeted literature review exploring the predictive value of estimated glomerular filtration rate and left ventricular mass index as indicators of clinical events in Fabry disease.

BACKGROUND: Fabry disease is a rare, progressive X-linked lysosomal storage disorder. It is caused by mutations in the GLA gene resulting in deficiency of α-galactosidase A (α-Gal A), leading to peripheral neuropathy, cardiovascular disease, stroke, end-stage renal disease, gastrointestinal disorders and premature death. Given the long-term nature of disease progression, trials in Fabry disease are often not powered to capture these clinical events. Clinical measures such as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) are often captured instead. eGFR and

"COAGULATION": a mnemonic device for treating coagulation disorders following traumatic brain injury-a narrative-based method in the intensive care unit.

INTRODUCTION: Coagulopathy associated with isolated traumatic brain injury (C-iTBI) is a frequent complication associated with poor outcomes, primarily due to its role in the development or progression of haemorrhagic brain lesions. The independent risk factors for its onset are age, severity of traumatic brain injury (TBI), volume of fluids administered during resuscitation, and pre-injury use of antithrombotic drugs. Although the pathophysiology of C-iTBI has not been fully elucidated, two distinct stages have been identified: an initial hypocoagulable phase that begins within the first 24 h

Update on acquired hypogonadism in men living with HIV: pathogenesis, clinic, and treatment.

Hypogonadism is a frequent finding among men living with HIV (MLWH) and it seems to occur earlier in comparison with the general male population. Although the prevalence of hypogonadism in MLWH has significantly lowered thanks to advancements in medical management, it remains high if compared with age-matched HIV-uninfected men, ranging from 13% to 40% in the age group of 20-60 years. Signs and symptoms of low serum testosterone (T) in MLWH are cause of concern since they are non-specific, of mild-to-moderate degree, and often overlapping with those of infection per se. For these reasons, hypo

Abelacimab in Cancer-Associated Thrombosis: The Right Drug at the Right Time for the Right Purpose. A Comprehensive Review.

Cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) is a devastating complication of cancer that can significantly impact a patient's health and life. The incidence of CAT is approximately 20%, and 1 in 5 cancer patients will develop CAT annually. Indeed, CAT can promote pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis, leading to increased morbidity and mortality that dramatically impact survival. CAT can also provoke delay or discontinuation of anticancer treatment, which may result in a lack of treatment efficacy and high costs for patients, institutions, and society. Current guidelines advocate direct oral anti

The Role of Serious Video Games in the Treatment of Disordered Eating Behaviors: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders and other forms of disordered eating cause significant complications and comorbidities in patients. However, full remission with current standard treatment remains low. Challenges to treatment include underdiagnosis and high dropout rates, as well as difficulties in addressing underlying emotion dysregulation, poor impulse control, and personality traits. Serious video games (SVGs), which have the advantages of being highly engaging and accessible, may be potential tools for delivering various forms of treatment in addressing the underlying psychopathology of disor

Mental health promotion and protection relating to key life events and transitions in adulthood: a rapid systematic review of systematic reviews.

BACKGROUND: During the decades representing working-age adulthood, most people will experience one or several significant life events or transitions. These may present a challenge to mental health. AIM: The primary aim of this rapid systematic review of systematic reviews was to summarise available evidence on the effectiveness of interventions to promote and protect mental health relating to four key life events and transitions: pregnancy and early parenthood, bereavement, unemployment, and housing problems. This review was conducted to inform UK national policy on mental health support. ME
