Completion of tuberculosis therapy for patients reported in the United States in 1993.

SETTING: The highest priority for tuberculosis (TB) control is to ensure patients complete therapy. However, standardized, detailed evaluation of national performance on completion of therapy in the United States has been lacking. Since 1982, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has had a program objective that at least 90% of TB cases complete therapy. Since 1986, the standard of practice for patients with drug-susceptible TB has been 6 months of therapy. OBJECTIVE: To determine completion of therapy rates and duration of therapy for US TB patients reported in 1993. DESIGN:

Changing trends in dental caries experience in Great Britain.

Periodic national surveys of dental health since 1968, and a coordinated program of local surveys of children since 1985, have provided a comprehensive picture of trends in dental caries experience in Great Britain over the course of two decades. This review of some of the findings examines changes in adult caries experience, together with the related phenomenon of total tooth loss; presents evidence of a cohort effect in the decline in caries among children and young adults; and considers likely future trends and their implications for the dental services. Conclusions drawn were: (1) Although

Community engagement as a foundation for implementation research for group psilocybin assisted therapy in New Mexico.

UNLABELLED: Informed by a community engagement process, we have developed a pragmatic, open-label, hybrid feasibility-implementation study of Group Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy (GPAT) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As psychedelic-assisted therapies begin to enter the broader mental health arena, engaging communities in the design of research and care models is essential to ensuring that those most impacted have access to-and trust in-the treatments being developed. Guided by the principle of "nothing about us without us," the proposed study was designed from the outset to be communi

The role of the health belief model and HPV self-testing in cervical cancer screening participation in the Czech Republic.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to apply the Champion’s Health Belief Model Scale (CHBMS) to: 1) assess the health beliefs and attitudes associated with previous participation in the national cervical cancer screening program among eligible women in the Czech Republic and; 2)analyze the potential increase in motivation to participate in cervical cancer screening if a home-based HPV self-sampling test were available as an alternative to the conventional Pap smear test performed by a gynecologist. METHODS: A cross-sectional, population-based study was conducted on a representative sample o

Factors associated with use of long-acting reversible and permanent contraceptives among married women in rural Kenya: A community-based cross-sectional study in Kisii and Kilifi counties.

Long-acting and permanent contraceptive methods (LAPM) are effective and economical methods for delaying or limiting pregnancies, however they are not widely used. The Kenya government is promoting the use of modern methods of family planning through various mechanisms. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with the use of LAPM among married women of reproductive age in targeted rural sub-counties of Kilifi and Kisii counties, Kenya. Effects of continuity of maternal health services on immediate newborn care practices, Northwestern Ethiopia: multilevel and propensity score matching (PSM) modeling.

BACKGROUND: Despite priority being given to maternal and child health programs in Ethiopia, the reduction of neonatal mortality rate is stagnant, which is more than double the national target. Immediate newborn care and continuity of maternal health services are comprehensive, wide-ranging, and core strategies to overcome neonatal mortality and morbidity. However, the evidence of immediate newborn care practices and the effectiveness of continuity of maternal health services on immediate newborn care practices are scarce. Hence, this study aimed to fill this gap. METHODS: A prospective follow

Implementation and evaluation of the Helping Babies Breathe curriculum in three resource limited settings: does Helping Babies Breathe save lives? A study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal deaths account for over 40% of all under-5 year deaths; their reduction is increasingly critical for achieving Millennium Development Goal 4. An estimated 3 million newborns die annually during their first month of life; half of these deaths occur during delivery or within 24 hours. Every year, 6 million babies require help to breathe immediately after birth. Resuscitation training to help babies breathe and prevent/manage birth asphyxia is not routine in low-middle income facility settings. Sexual health behavior, health status, and knowledge among queer womxn and trans men in Kenya: An online cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Little research has been conducted on the sexual health needs and risk behaviors of queer womxn and trans men, making it difficult to identify specific health needs and disparities. This is especially the case in the Global South, where their needs are poorly understood. This study presents findings on demographics, sources of information, sexual (risk) behaviors, and substance use in Kenyan queer womxn and trans men. METHODS: An online survey among 335 Kenyan queer womxn and trans men was used to collect data on sexual health, risk behavior, health information sources, and subs

TB Data Improvement in Nkembo Health Treatment Center in Libreville, Gabon.

UNLABELLED: Although the estimated tuberculosis (TB) incidence in Gabon is declining, there have been challenges with treatment coverage, HIV status and treatment outcome documentation. Thus, the National TB Program (NTP) conducted an innovative data review at the Nkembo Health Treatment Center in Libreville, which manages more than 70% of Gabonese TB patients. Since our hypothesis was that the Nkembo treatment center was struggling with data mismanagement due to the workload, the objective was to perform a TB data quality review and triangulation exercise at the Nkembo health facility in Libr

Early Outcomes of Elective Anterior Cervical Diskectomy and Fusion for Degenerative Spine Disease Correlate With the Specialty of the Surgeon Performing the Procedure.

BACKGROUND: Comparative effectiveness research has a vital role in recent health reform and policies. Specialty training is one of these provider-side variables, and surgeons who were trained in different specialties may have different outcomes on performing the same procedure. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of spine surgeon specialty (neurosurgery vs orthopedic surgery) on early perioperative outcome measures of elective anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion (ACDF) for degenerative spine diseases. METHODS: This was a retrospective, 1:1 propensity score-matched cohort study. In total

Liver disease burden and required treatment expenditures for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Thailand: Implications for HCV elimination in the new therapeutic era, a population-based study.

The prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has been decreasing globally, but the growing effects of HCV-related morbidity and mortality remain of concern. Advances in curative medicine, involving direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), have led many countries to aim to eradicate HCV. Information on epidemiology and disease burden is essential for national policy development. Thus, this study aimed to determine the HCV-related hepatic disease burden in areas of Thailand with high and average HCV prevalence in order to extrapolate the viral burden across Thailand. Patients previously diagnosed

Potential epidemiologic, economic, and budgetary impacts of current rates of hepatitis C treatment in medicare and non-medicare populations.

We forecast the health and budgetary impact of hepatitis C (HCV) treatment on the Medicare program based on currently observed rates of treatment among Medicare and non-Medicare patients and identify the impact of higher rates of treatment among non-Medicare populations. We developed a computer microsimulation model to conduct an epidemiologic forecast, a budgetary impact analysis, and a cost-effectiveness analysis of the treatment of HCV based on three scenarios: 1) no treatment, 2) continuation of current-treatment rates, and 3) treatment rates among non-Medicare patients increased to match

Costs analysis of a population level rabies control programme in Tamil Nadu, India.

The study aimed to determine costs to the state government of implementing different interventions for controlling rabies among the entire human and animal populations of Tamil Nadu. This built upon an earlier assessment of Tamil Nadu's efforts to control rabies. Anti-rabies vaccines were made available at all health facilities. Costs were estimated for five different combinations of animal and human interventions using an activity-based costing approach from the provider perspective. Disease and population data were sourced from the state surveillance data, human census and livestock census.

Integration of leprosy elimination into primary health care in orissa, India.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy was eliminated as a public health problem (<1 case per 10,000) in India by December 2005. With this target in sight the need for a separate vertical programme was diminished. The second phase of the National Leprosy Eradication Programme was therefore initiated: decentralisation of the vertical programme, integration of leprosy services into the primary health care (PHC) system and development of a surveillance system to monitor programme performance. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To study the process of integration a qualitative analysis of issues and perceptions of pat

Guidelines for school programs to prevent skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Since 1973, new cases of the most serious form of skin cancer, melanoma, have increased approximately 150%. During the same period, deaths from melanoma have increased approximately 44%. Approximately 65%-90% of melanomas are caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. More than one half of a persons lifetime UV exposure occurs during childhood and adolescence because of more opportunities and time for exposure. Exposure to UV radiation during childhood plays a role in the future development of skin cancer. Persons with a history of

How Does SNAP Access Prior to Pregnancy Affect Maternal and Infant Health Outcomes?

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Reimposing work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-by removing temporary, location-based waivers-causes a decline in food assistance participation among childless women. This loss of nutritional support prior to pregnancy is linked to tangible, negative health outcomes for their infants. Analyses show that, when work requirements are reimposed, there are statistically significant increases in very low birth weight and very preterm births. These adverse effects are found among first-time mothers, the group most likely to have been subject to

Vitamin A supplementation coverage and its associated factors among children 6-59 months of age in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A supplementation is a key strategy for preventing the consequences of vitamin A deficiency and childhood illnesses, notably in countries where vitamin A deficiency is a public health issue. However, studies in Ethiopia are inconsistent. Hence, this meta-analysis assessed coverage of vitamin A supplementation and associated factors among children aged 6-59 months in Ethiopia. METHODS: A search of articles from databases (PubMed, Science Direct, African Index Medicus, and HINARI), and search engines (Google Scholar, Google, and Worldwide Science) was done. Postpartum depression crisis since the second lockdown and 'screening paradox': many women identified, very few treated.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to stressful situations, such as emergencies, infectious diseases, and natural disasters, may lead to a heightened risk of perinatal mental health problems. Declared on March 11th, 2020, the global COVID-19 pandemic triggered an additional burden on women in the perinatal period. Safety recommendations, such as social distancing and isolation, were opposite to the usual advice given to new mothers. Besides fear, changes in financial stability and daily life reorganization contributed to increased depressive symptoms. As the periods of epidemic waves and lockdowns were assoc
