Neural biomarkers in pulpitis and their associations with inflammation and pain perception: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Pulpal nerves have been revealed to play a crucial role in regulating immune responses and pain perception in dental pulp inflammation. While the dynamic changes in inflammatory mediators during the progression of pulpitis have been extensively emphasized, neural biomarkers and pulpal nerve alterations have not been well summarized. The objective of this study was to synthesise evidence on the expression of molecular biomarkers associated with neural alterations during pulp inflammation, with particular emphasis on which molecules orchestrate inflammation and how they regulate pain perception.

Cortico-conus motor conduction time (CCCT) for leg muscles.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the conduction time from the motor cortex to the conus medullaris (cortico-conus motor conduction time, CCCT) for leg muscles using magnetic stimulation. METHODS: Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from tibialis anterior muscles in 51 healthy volunteers. To activate spinal nerves at the most proximal cauda equina level or at the conus medullaris level, magnetic stimulation was performed using a MATS coil. Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex was also conducted to measure the cortical latency for the target muscle. To obtain the CCCT, the latenc

Clinical and neurophysiological assessment of immunoglobulin therapy in five patients with multifocal motor neuropathy.

High dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is an effective treatment for demyelinating neuropathies. IVIg was given to five patients with multifocal motor neuropathy, a motor neuropathy showing a clinical syndrome of asymmetrical weakness and amyotrophy, electrophysiological evidence of motor conduction block and, in many cases, high titres of serum anti-GM1 antibodies. Muscle strength was evaluated by a conventional score before and after each IVIg course. In all patients there was relevant improvement on muscle strength after each immunoglobulin course, but in most cases the clinical benefi

A prospective longitudinal study on radiation-induced hearing loss.

Recent clinical reports indicate that patients receiving radiotherapy that includes the auditory system in the treatment volume are likely to develop an irradiation-induced hearing loss. Although the early, presumed reversible, conductive hearing impairment due to secretory otitis media following radiotherapy is a sequela well known by radiation oncologists, permanent hearing loss, both conductive and sensorineural, is believed to be rare. A prospective study was performed enrolling patients receiving postoperative radiotherapy for unilateral parotid tumors. Audiometric results prior to irradi

Firing properties of single axons with cardiac rhythmicity in the human cervical vagus nerve.

Microneurographic recordings of the human cervical vagus nerve have revealed the presence of multi-unit neural activity with measurable cardiac rhythmicity. This suggests that the physiology of vagal neurones with cardiovascular regulatory function can be studied using this method. Here, the activity of cardiac rhythmic single units was discriminated from human cervical vagus nerve recordings using template-based waveform matching. The activity of 44 cardiac rhythmic neurones (22 with myelinated axons and 22 with unmyelinated axons) was isolated. By consideration of each unit's firing pattern

Predicting auditory tone-in-noise detection performance: the effects of neural variability.

Collecting and analyzing psychophysical data is a fundamental mechanism for the study of auditory processing. However, because this approach relies on human listening experiments, it can be costly in terms of time and money spent gathering the data. The development of a theoretical, model-based procedure capable of accurately predicting psychophysical behavior could alleviate these issues by enabling researchers to rapidly evaluate hypotheses prior to conducting experiments. This approach may also provide additional insight into auditory processing by establishing a link between psychophysical

Clinical and electrophysiological characteristics of women with X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

BACKGROUND: X-Linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1 (CMTX1) is characterized by gender differences in clinical severity. Women are usually clinically affected later and less severely than men. However, their clinical presentation appears to be heterogenous. Our aim was to extend the phenotypic description in a large series of women with CMTX1. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 263 patients with CMTX1 from 11 French reference centers. Demographic, clinical, and nerve conduction data were collected. The severity was assessed by CMT Examination Score (CMTES) and Overall Neuropathy Limita

Subcutaneous tri-block copolymer produces recovery from spinal cord injury.

We have studied the ability of nonionic detergents and hydrophilic polymers to seal permeabilized membranes of damaged cells, rescuing them from progressive dissolution, degeneration, and death. We report that a single subcutaneous injection of the tri-block copolymer, Poloxamer 188 (P188) 6 hr after a severe compression of the adult guinea pig spinal cord is able to: (1). preserve the anatomic integrity of the cord; (2). produce a rapid recovery of nerve impulse conduction through the lesion; and (3). produce a behavioral recovery of a spinal cord dependent long tract spinal cord reflex. Posture-dependent cerebrospinal fluid flow measurement in the optic nerve subarachnoid space using multi-delay 2D interslice saturation MRI.

Recent studies have indicated that CSF dynamics within the optic nerve subarachnoid space (ONSAS) may play an important role in the progression of optic diseases. Yet, as common optical tests are limited to the ocular structures and cannot probe beyond the optic nerve head, direct evaluation of CSF dynamics in ONSAS remains challenging due to limited imaging methods. In this study, we propose a non-invasive MRI method, inversion-recovery alternate ascending/descending directional navigation (IR-ALADDIN), that utilizes interslice saturation and variable delay times (TD) to enable quantification

Image characteristics of retained medullary cord in secondary neurulation arrest: an observational study.

Retained medullary cord (RMC) is a recently defined term denoting closed spinal dysraphism arising from the failure of regression in secondary neurulation. Despite the acknowledgment of this condition, there needs to be more literature elucidating the radiologic manifestations of RMC. This study aimed to describe the MR imaging findings of RMC. A retrospective analysis was conducted on spinal MRI scans of pediatric patients with surgically confirmed RMC, from January 2014 to August 2023. The investigation focused on evaluating the following image characteristics: level and morphology of the co

Sympathetic nerve activity and response to physiological stress in Takotsubo syndrome.

PURPOSE: The prevailing hypothesis posits that Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is caused by massive sympathetic activation, yet supporting evidence remains inconsistent. The objectives of the present study were to determine whether sympathetic activity and reactivity are enhanced in the recovery phase of TTS, and to evaluate the effect of selective β1-receptor blockade on sympathetic reactivity. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study that included 18 female patients with TTS and 13 age- and sex-matched controls. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity was measured through microneurography of the peron
