OBJECT: Shock waves have been experimentally applied to various neurosurgical treatments including fragmentation of cerebral emboli, perforation of cyst walls or tissue, and delivery of drugs into cells. Nevertheless, the application of shock waves to clinical neurosurgery remains challenging because the threshold for shock wave-induced brain injury has not been determined. The authors investigated the pressure-dependent effect of shock waves on histological changes of rat brain, focusing especially on apoptosis.
METHODS: Adult male rats were exposed to a single shot of shock waves (produced

Balanced anesthesia with sevoflurane-fentanyl has been widely accepted as anesthetic management for neurosurgery. Propofol-remifentanil regimen has been successfully used in various surgical settings, but a comprehensive comparison of sevoflurane-fentanyl and propofol-remifentanil anesthesia in patients undergoing craniotomy for supratentorial intracranial surgery has not yet been done. The aim of this prospective, randomized, open-label clinical trial was to compare clinical properties of sevoflurane-fentanyl with propofol-remifentanil anesthesia in patients undergoing supratentorial intracra

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular schwannomas (VSs) are known to be relatively slow-growing tumors. Some VSs, however, rapidly regrow or recur after surgical resection. Our objective was to investigate the clinicopathological characteristics of these tumors and to elucidate factors that can predict rapid regrowth or recurrence after surgical resection.
METHODS: Between 1978 and 2000, 29 patients with VS underwent reoperation for regrowth or recurrence at the Department of Neurosurgery in Seoul National University Hospital. Among these patients, 15 experienced rapid VS regrowth or recurrence (annual growt

INTRODUCTION: Patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are subjected to multiple stressors, including environmental changes, medical treatment, and surgical procedures. Hospitalization in an unfamiliar setting, especially when separated from family members, can increase anxiety and stress, which may adversely influence vital signs and levels of consciousness. Tactile stimulation, when integrated with routine medical management, may contribute to improving patient outcomes. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the effect of tactile stimulation on the level of consciousness and vita

BACKGROUND: A state of war has the potential to profoundly disrupt routine, essential ambulatory hospital services, negatively impacting both acute hospitalizations and continuity of care. During June 2025, a war ignited between Israel and Iran, causing multiple casualties and substantial damage to essential healthcare facilities. This study examined the impact of the war on ambulatory visit volumes at Israel's largest tertiary medical center and assessed the contribution of telemedicine encounters to mitigating conflict-related disruptions.
METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of ambula

BACKGROUND: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is one of the most prevalent diseases encountered in neurosurgery. At present, burr-hole hematoma drainage has been established as the standard surgical intervention for CSDH, effectively reducing the risk of postoperative recurrence. The current study employed systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) to assess the impact of drain placement in three different anatomical locations-subdural drain (SDD), subperiosteal drain (SPD), and subgaleal drain (SGD)-on treatment outcomes.
METHODS: A search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Cochrane

BACKGROUND: Following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), aneurysm rebleeding leads to very poor clinical outcomes. Ruptured aneurysms must be urgently secured either by open microsurgery or endovascular techniques to prevent re-rupture. The objective of this study was to compare time-to-treatment and functional outcomes following aSAH between rural and urban patients treated at a quaternary neurosurgical centre with a large geographical catchment.
METHODS: We analyzed patients enrolled in the Vancouver Ruptured Aneurysm Database (VRAD) between December 2022 and September 2025. Demogra

BACKGROUND: The escalation of medical disputes and patient complaints represents a critical challenge to healthcare systems globally, particularly in high-volume tertiary hospitals in China. While patient-related risk factors are well-documented, the contribution of healthcare professionals' (HCPs) occupational characteristics, burnout levels, and legal awareness to dispute risk remains under-explored. This study aims to identify these provider-side risk factors and develop a predictive nomogram to quantify the risk of medical complaints.
METHODS: A single-center, cross-sectional retrospectiv
