Individual and Cumulative Health and Lifestyle Risk Factors for Depressive Symptoms in Older Adults: Evidence from NHANES.

BACKGROUND: Depression in older adults is a multifactorial condition influenced by health status, functional capacity, and lifestyle factors. This study aimed to investigate the individual and combined associations of these factors with late-life depression. METHODS: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), this study evaluated the associations of general health, chronic conditions, functioning, and lifestyle behaviors (including physical activity, sleep, diet quality, smoking, and alcohol use) with depressive symptoms among U.S. adults 65 years and older

The role of comorbidity and frailty in shaping the burden of atrial fibrillation: a multinational cross-sectional survey.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in older adults and often coexists with other chronic conditions, exacerbating physical and cognitive decline and contributing to frailty. The interplay between frailty and comorbidity in AF remains underexplored, particularly regarding quality of life (QoL), health management, and outcome prioritization. Within the AFFIRMO project, this study investigated the experiences of older adults with AF and at least one chronic condition via an online survey. Frailty was assessed using the FRAIL questionnaire, and participants were grouped by frai

HIV-related stigma, couple relationship quality, and mental health in sero-discordant pregnant couples in Kenya.

HIV-related stigma negatively impacts the health of people who are living with HIV. Stigma may also affect sero-discordant couples where one partner is living with HIV, but the other is not. However, we know little about how HIV-related stigma and couple relationship quality jointly affect depression and anxiety in both the individual and their partner. We analyzed dyadic data from 491 sero-discordant pregnant couples in southwestern Kenya collected during 2019-2022 using Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) methods. Controlling for relationship quality, HIV-related stigma perceived by b

Oral health in assisted living communities: A hidden driver of systemic disease.

Oral health is an important part of overall health, but it is often overlooked in older adults, especially those in memory care and skilled nursing communities. This paper discusses oral health problems in assisted living, how they are connected to serious health conditions, and a few practical steps one can take to mitigate or even prevent these conditions. Older adults are more likely to develop oral diseases due to changes in hygiene habits, normal aging, age-related medical conditions, and reliance on caregivers for daily oral hygiene. In many communities, limited time, lack of training, a

Dental treatment needs and treatment frequency of inmates in basel.

The aim of this retrospective descriptive study was to identify the treatment frequency of prisoners and the associated need for dental treatment, as well as to analyse the associations between the DMFT index, general health conditions (mental health) and health behaviour (cigarette smoking). For this purpose, the medical records (secondary data) from 2018-2020 of 317 inmates receiving dental treatment from two Basel prisons were examined, categorized and statistically evaluated using linear regression models (RECORD 1.1, 1.2). At the time of the medical history, 87.1% of the inmates were taki

Trends in disability and limitations among US adults aged 18-44 years, 2000-2018.

Understanding disability trends is critical for health care and social policy. Although trends in disability and limitations have been studied extensively among older and middle-aged adults, little is known about trends in younger Americans, despite their importance for current and future population health. We present the first comprehensive evidence on disability trends among US adults age 18-44. We analyze 20 measures of disability and limitations collected in the nationally representative National Health Interview Survey 2000-2018 (n = 261 505). Robust Poisson models estimate age- and sex-a

Client Violence and Emotional Health Among Child Protection Services Workers.

This study examined how client violence, or violence from clients, contributes to emotional health over the first three years of employment among one group of susceptible workers: child protective services workers in child welfare. The study assessed the impact of three types of client violence (i.e., yelling, threats, and physical assault) and job characteristics (e.g., time pressure, supervisory support) on emotional health (i.e., stress, psychological distress, and personal burnout), using a sample of 1,117-1,122 newly hired workers over six waves of data collected at six-month intervals. Vaccination protects animal and human health and reduces the economic burden of preventable cases: rabies in vaccinated dogs and cats (2002-2022).

Rabies vaccine failures in domestic animals can have severe public health consequences and are not consistently publicized. This study describes trends in rabies vaccine failures among dogs and cats in the US reported to the CDC's National Rabies Surveillance System between 2002 and 2022 to characterize the efficacy of rabies vaccines and evaluate the economic and public health burdens of nonvaccination. Thirty-nine of 1,525 rabid dogs (2.56%) and 30 of 5,530 rabid cats (0.54%) were documented as having a history of rabies vaccination, and 15 true vaccine failures (11 dogs and 4 cats) were ide

Effects of dietary nitrate supplementation on oral health and associated markers of systemic health: a systematic review.

Poor oral health can impact an individual's ability to eat and has been associated with an increased risk of non-communicable diseases. While the benefits of nitrate consumption on oral health were first proposed more than 20 years ago, no systematic review has been published examining effects of dietary nitrate on oral health. This systematic review investigated the effects of dietary nitrate on markers of oral health in vivo in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Five databases (PubMed, The Cochrane Library, CINAHL, MEDLINE, and SPORTDiscus) were searched from inception until March 2023. Ni

African migrant men's experiences and preferences for formal mental health help-seeking: meta-synthesis and recommendations.

OBJECTIVE: Despite high rates of mental illness and significant barriers to accessing assistance, little is known about African migrant men's views on formal mental health help-seeking (i.e. from a health professional) in their new countries. We aimed to synthesise qualitative literature on African migrant men's experiences and preferences regarding formal mental health help-seeking in their new countries, and develop recommendations from the findings. METHOD: Systematic searches of six databases (nil date restrictions) for qualitative data from adult men who had migrated from any of the 16 c

Extended Postpartum Medicaid In Colorado Associated With Increased Treatment For Perinatal Mood And Anxiety Disorders.

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD), a leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality, affect approximately one in seven births in the US. To understand whether extending pregnancy-related Medicaid eligibility from sixty days to twelve months may increase the use of mental health care among low-income postpartum people, we measured the effect of retaining Medicaid as a low-income adult on mental health treatment in the postpartum year, using a "fuzzy" regression discontinuity design and linked all-payer claims data, birth records, and income data from Colorado from the period 2014-

Increasing chronic disease preventive care in community mental health services: clinician-generated strategies.

BACKGROUND: People with a mental health condition experience a high prevalence of chronic disease risk behaviours e.g., tobacco smoking and physical inactivity. Recommended 'preventive care' to address these risks is infrequently provided by community mental health services. This study aimed to elucidate, among community mental health managers and clinicians, suggestions for strategies to support provision of preventive care. METHODS: Three qualitative focus groups (n = 14 clinicians) were undertaken in one regional community mental health service to gather perspectives of barriers to prevent

The final 28 Days:Prenatal exposure to air pollution and child anthropometric outcomes.

This study examines the health consequences of prenatal exposure to air pollution by combining child health data from an original survey with the Air Pollution Index (API) from official Chinese statistics. Our results show that exposure to air pollution in late trimester (four-week windows before delivery) is negatively associated with health outcomes in children in the short and long terms. One standard deviation increase in the API in the final 28 days before delivery decreased birth weight and length by 0.388 and 0.458, respectively, in z-scores and lowered the weight-for-age and height-for
