OBJECTIVE: Primary intraorbital mucoceles arising from the optic canal are extremely rare. We describe a patient with compressive optic neuropathy caused by an intraorbital mucocele.
CLINICAL CASE: A 51-year-old woman presented with proptosis and reduced vision. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass compressing the optic nerve. There was no direct connection between any paranasal sinus and the mass cavity, as assessed in imaging studies and intraoperatively confirmed. The pathological diagnosis after the operation indicated a mucocele.
DISCUSSION: Considering the absence of air pockets in…

Retrobulbar neuritis is a frequent diagnosis in patients (age groups 20-40 years), who complain about acute monocular loss of vision, accompanied by painful eye movements. The clinical course with recovery over about six weeks and the possibility of additional neurological dysfunction in the following years confirm the diagnosis of primarily demyelinating disease. Beside the typical retrobulbar neuritis, there is a group of vascular optic nerve disorders as well as Leber's optic neuropathy that need to be differentiated from primary demyelinating retrobulbar neuritis. Compressive optic neuropa…

Optic neuritis, a characteristic feature of multiple sclerosis (MS), involves the inflammation of the optic nerve and the degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Although previous studies suggest that retinal blood flow alterations occur during optic neuritis, the precise location, the degree of impairment, and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we utilized two emerging non-invasive imaging techniques, laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), to investigate retinal vascular changes in a mouse model of MS, known as experim…

INTRODUCTION: Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) is a rare congenital heterogeneous malformation with postulated genetic and environmental etiology. Septo-optic dysplasia is characterized by classic triad: optic nerve hypoplasia, midline brain malformation and hypothalamic-pituitary endocrine deficiencies. The most common hormonal deficiencies affect growth hormone and gonadotropin but it can also be lower levels of the other hormones. The rarest form of hormone deficiency is the deficiency of the antidiuretic hormone.
CASE REPORT: The boy was born in 39th week of pregnancy in general good condition…

The human amnion has been used for decades in wound healing, particularly burns. Amnion epithelial cells (AECs) have been the focus of extensive research based on their possible pluripotent differentiation ability. A novel, cultured cell population derived from AECs, termed human amnion-derived multipotent progenitor (AMP) cells, secrete numerous cytokines and growth factors that enhance tissue regeneration and reduce inflammation. This AMP cell secretome, termed ST266, is a unique biological solution that accumulates in eyes and optic nerves following intranasal delivery, resulting in selecti…

BACKGROUND: Ischemic optic neuropathy (ION) is an infarction of the anterior or, less frequently, posterior part of the optic nerve, usually due to a disease of small arteries supplying the optic nerve. Carotid stenosis or occlusions are rare causes, and among them, carotid dissections have been so far reported in only 5 cases.
METHODS: We describe 4 patients with ION (2 anterior and 2 posterior) due to internal carotid artery dissection of a consecutive series of 110 patients with internal carotid artery dissection (3.6%).
RESULTS: None of the patients had signs of central retinal artery oc…

Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is the most common acute optic neuropathy in individuals over 50 years and presents with sudden, painless vision loss. However, due to the limited phenotypic repertoire of optic nerve injury, other conditions can closely mimic NAION, leading to diagnostic uncertainty. This review outlines the key clinical, imaging and systemic features that help differentiate NAION from its major masquerades, including arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy, demyelinating optic neuritis, autoimmune and granulomatous diseases, hereditary optic neu…

PURPOSE: The optic disc and the macular are two major anatomical structures in the human eye. Optic discs are associated with the optic nerve. Macular mainly involves degeneration and impaired function of the macular region. Reliable optic disc and macular segmentation are necessary for the automated screening of retinal diseases.
METHODS: A swept-source OCTA system was designed to capture OCTA images of human eyes. To address these segmentation tasks, first, we constructed a new Optic Disc and Macula in fundus Image with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) dataset (ODMI). Second,…
