Using a cognitive architecture to examine what develops.

Different theories of development propose alternative mechanisms by which development occurs. Cognitive architectures can be used to examine the influence of each proposed mechanism of development while keeping all other mechanisms constant. An ACT-R computational model that matched adult behavior in solving a 21-block pyramid puzzle was created. The model was modified in three ways that corresponded to mechanisms of development proposed by developmental theories. The results showed that all the modifications (two of capacity and one of strategy choice) could approximate the behavior of 7-year

Seeing or not seeing where your hands are.

Previous findings have demonstrated the existence of a visual peripersonal space centered on the hand in humans and its modulatory effects on tactile perception. A strong modulatory effect of vision on touch perception was found when a visual stimulus was presented near the hand. In contrast, when the visual stimulus was presented far from the hand, only a weak modulatory effect was found. The aim of the present study was to verify whether such cross-modal links between touch and vision in the peripersonal space centered on the hand could be mediated by proprioceptive signals specifying the cu

Rotatory seizures in a patient with tuberous sclerosis.

We present an 11-year-old girl with tuberous sclerosis who developed seizures characterized by circling behavior. Rotatory seizures are uncommon and occur mainly secondary to a focal pathology. Our patient had a right temporal epileptic focus, confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to be a subcortical lesion in the right temporal region. This case is probably the first reported case of tuberous sclerosis associated with rotatory seizures with an ictal EEG.

Development of gravity-sensing organs in altered gravity.

Experiments are described in which the development of the gravity-sensing organs was studied in newt larvae reared in microgravity on the IML-2 mission and in Aplysia embryos and larvae reared on a centrifuge at 1 to 5 g. In Aplysia embryos, the statolith (single dense mass on which gravity and linear acceleration act) was reduced in size in a graded fashion at increasing g. In early post-metamorphic Aplysia or even in isolated statocysts from such animals, the number of statoconia produced is reduced at high g. Newt larvae launched before any of the otoconia were formed and reared for 15 days

An investigation of a method of simplified scoring for the Kaufman Hand Movements test as a measure of limb apraxia.

A simplified, 3-category method for scoring the Kaufman Hand Movements test was devised to replace a previously used, more complex 21-category scoring method. The concurrent validity and diagnostic sensitivity of the rescored test as a measure of limb apraxia were investigated in a reanalysis of the test protocols of 23 aphasic adults. Using the Limb Apraxia Test as the criterion measure, a Pearson r of .71 and predictive validity of 100% were obtained. These results encourage further investigation of the Kaufman Hand Movements test as an efficient measure of limb apraxia.

Dynamics of propagating waves in the olfactory network of a terrestrial mollusk: an electrical and optical study.

1. The procerebral (PC) lobe of the terrestrial mollusk Limax maximus contains a highly interconnected network of local olfactory interneurons that receives ipsilateral axonal projections from superior and inferior noses. This network exhibits an approximately 0.7-Hz intrinsic oscillation in its local field potential (LFP). 2. Intracellular recordings show that the lobe contains at least two classes of neurons with activity phase locked to the oscillation. Neurons in one class produce periodic bursts of spikes, followed by a period of hyperpolarization and subsequently a depolarizing afterpote

Rotational occlusion of the vertebral artery at the atlantoaxial joint: is it truly physiological?

We present a patient with vertebrobasilar insufficiency, with vertigo and horizontal nystagmus, induced by turning the head to the right. Angiography demonstrated transient occlusion of the left vertebral artery at the atlantoaxial joint during rotation of the head. The pathogenesis and angiographic findings are discussed.

Space vestibulo-neuroscience in the new century.

In the new century there will probably be more long spaceflights and fewer short spaceflights. There will probably be several flights to Mars, flights that (if chemical rockets are used) will involve one year to get there, a second year on Mars, and a third year to return. The three-year Mars scenario will probably include rotation of the spacecraft to provide artificial gravity. If nuclear thermal rockets are used, a manned exploration of Mars could be accomplished in less than one year. Vestibular research will be directed towards ensuring that astronauts, upon landing on Mars, will be able

Neuronal motion after-response induced in the tectal neurons of toads by moving textured background.

When an object is held stationary in the center of the receptive field of a tectal neuron in a toad and a textured background is moved for a period of time, some neurons produce a burst of discharges immediately after the movement of the background ceases. This effect was first found in a recent study and temporarily called 'neuronal motion after-response'. A total of 66 tectal neurons in toads were examined, and 29 out of them showed the effect. In the different neurons under investigation, the firing rate varied from a few spikes to discharges of very long duration. The appearance of the mot

Women who excel on a spatial task: proposed genetic and environmental factors.

A "bent twig" model which incorporates Annett's genetic handedness theory with an environmental component predicted characteristics of college women likely to excel on a mental rotation task. Those likely to have the necessary combination of genetic potential and prior experiences are right-handed women with non-right-handed relatives who rate themselves high in spatial experiences. This subgroup significantly outperformed all other groups of right-handed women on the Vandenberg Mental Rotation Test. This study provides support for the view that family handedness and spatial experiences are im

The effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on radial arm maze performance in adult rats.

The hippocampal formation is sensitive to the in utero exposure to ethanol. It is one brain area thought to play an important role in spatial memory. We examined radial arm maze performance in rats exposed to ethanol prenatally. Pregnant rats were placed into the following treatment groups: LC, 17% EDC (ethanol-derived calories), 35% EDC, PF 35% or PF 17%. The LC group was fed lab chow and water ad lib, the 17% EDC and 35% EDC groups were fed a liquid diet containing either 3.3% or 6.7% v/v ethanol, respectively. Pair-fed controls were fed the same volume of an isocaloric diet as was consumed

Specialized face processing and hemispheric asymmetry in man and monkey: evidence from single unit and reaction time studies.

Experimental and clinical studies have generally shown that the neural mechanisms for face processing in man are (1) designed to deal with the configuration of upright faces and (2) located predominantly in the right cerebral hemisphere. Monkeys would seem to process faces in a different manner to humans since they appear to show no hemispheric asymmetry and to treat upright and inverted faces equivalently. We re-examine these claims. Our reaction time studies reveal that monkeys do behave like human subjects since they process facial configuration faster when stimuli are presented upright as

Compensatory eye movement and gaze fixation upon passive head- and body rotation and active head rotation.

To detect differences in compensatory eye movement and gaze fixation, normal subjects and patients with bilateral loss of labyrinthine functions were subjected to passive head-and-body rotation and performed active head rotation. In normal subjects, there was no difference between passive and active rotation with respect to compensatory eye movement in the dark and spatial gaze fixation; on the other hand, the ability to gaze fixedly on a head-fixed target was better during passive than active rotation. In our patients, the findings obtained upon passive rotation resembled those already report

Psychogenic and neurogenic effects on the intact forearm vein of man.

By means of an elegant venous preparation the behavior of intact veins of man can be studied decisively. The superficial veins of man are extremely sensitive to the environment and the autonomic and central nervous systems. This report illustrates the response of an isolated venous segment of the forearm to various psychogenic and neurogenic stimuli, with change in tone of the smooth muscle of the venous segment being reflected by change in segmental venous pressure. It is shown that the superficial forearm veins can be conditioned and that they are extremely dynamic and certainly not passive

Dural arteriovenous fistula causing reversible cognitive impairment.

A previously independent 82-year-old woman presented with 5 months of worsening confusion, mobility and cognitive decline, with deficits in orientation, language and executive function. A cerebral dural arteriovenous fistula was identified and successfully embolised, after which her cognitive ability and independence dramatically improved. Although rare, a dural arteriovenous fistula may mimic a rapidly progressive dementia, but its early recognition and treatment can completely reverse the dementia.

Thoughts on the nature of identity: how disorders of sex development inform clinical research about gender identity disorders.

Disorders of sex development (DSD), like gender dysphoria, are conditions with major effects on child sexuality and identity, as well as sexual orientation. Each may in some cases lead to change of gender from that assigned neonatally. These similarities-and the conditions' differences-provide a context for reviewing the articles in this issue about clinical approaches to children with gender dysphoria, in relation to assessment, intervention, and ethics.

Evaluation of uterine anomalies: 3D FRFSE cube versus standard 2D FRFSE.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare a novel MRI sequence-3D fast-recovery fast spin-echo (FRFSE) cube-with a standard 2D FRFSE sequence for the investigation of uterine anomalies. CONCLUSION: Compared with 2D FRFSE, 3D FRFSE cube provides superior image quality and improved 3D reconstructions in a shorter acquisition time and enables excellent visualization of uterine anatomy in any orientation, regardless of the original scanning plane.

[Molecular and therapeutic approaches of the Alzheimer's disease].

The Alzheimer's disease (AD) is clinically characterized by the progressive appearance of amnesic disorders, which are followed by a clinical syndrome associating aphasia, apraxia and agnosia. In this picture are added behavioural problems, marked for example by decision-making or judgment confusions and disturbances of the orientation. The therapeutic perspectives are based especially on molecular targets that are the peptide Abeta, the protein tau or the facilitating molecular ways of neurodegeneration.

Delivery sheath tear after modification for ASD closure.

During transcatheter closure of an atrial septal defect with insufficient aortic rim, a standard delivery sheath was modified by cutting a bevel at the distal tip to improve device orientation. The sheath split longitudinally when attempting to recapture the closure device. Troubleshooting allowed a device to be implanted successfully. Pitfalls regarding our sheath modification and methods to overcome prolapse of the left atrial disk into the right atrium are discussed.
