The aim of this prospective, longitudinal, controlled study is to describe the long-term safety and efficacy of growth hormone (GH) administration on craniofacial morphology in boys with short stature. Forty-six boys, who started GH treatment at the Department of Paediatrics Göteborg Paediatric Growth Research Centre, were consecutively included in the study. Twenty-five boys were classified as growth hormone-deficient (GHD) and 21 as idiopathic short stature (ISS). The patients were injected with 33 (n=31) or 67 (n=15) microg GH/kg body weight/day. The mean age at the start of treatment was 1

Hyperdontia is a developmental anomaly that can disrupt normal tooth eruption and occlusal harmony. Compound odontomas, although benign and often asymptomatic, may cause delayed eruption and other complications requiring surgical management. This case report details the treatment of a 22-year-old female presenting with failure of eruption of the mandibular left permanent canine. Clinical and radiographic evaluation revealed a retained deciduous canine, a compound odontoma, and a horizontally impacted supernumerary tooth. Surgical intervention under local anesthesia involved extraction of the r

Anterior crossbite is a significant malocclusion characterized by the lingual eruption of one or more maxillary front teeth, often impeded by the mandibular deciduous counterparts. This clinical case study focused on a patient with an anterior crossbite involving the central and lateral incisors, detailing the diagnosis, treatment course, and outcomes. During the clinical evaluation, both aesthetic concerns related to attrition and occlusal malocclusion were identified. Diagnostic tests, including radiographs and extraoral and intraoral examinations, were conducted before initiating treatment.

Incorporating zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles as antibacterial fillers in heat-cured acrylic resin could decrease mucin and Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) adhesion, reducing the incidence of dental caries in the baseplates of orthodontic patients. Here, ZnO nanoparticles were modified using 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate with various concentrations, added to acrylic resin powder, homogenized, mixed with acrylic resin liquid, and processed. The composite systems interfered well with mucin and S. mutans adhesion. The lowest mean of the amount of mucin adhered was on heat-cured acrylic r

Unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) results in facial asymmetry, malocclusion, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Treatment consists of both surgical and orthodontic intervention. A review was performed for 4 patients with UCH who underwent digital surgical planning (DSP)-assisted condylectomy. All patients were female, aged 14 to 35 years at the time of operation with facial asymmetry and class III malocclusion. None of the patients had prior treatment and all had perioperative orthodontic appliances to provide fixation and postoperative elastic therapy. All patients underwent DSP-gui

Amelogenesis imperfecta is a rare hereditary disorder that affects dental enamel and is often associated with an anterior open bite. Orthodontic treatment of a 16-year-old female patient with hypocalcified amelogenesis imperfecta and a 9-mm anterior open bite was presented. Radiographic examination revealed a steep mandibular plane angle, an increased lower face height, a Class II skeletal pattern, and a convex profile. Additionally, the patient had stainless steel crowns on all upper and lower posterior teeth and composite veneers on the upper anterior teeth. The patient was treated nonsurgic

Binder syndrome (BS) is an uncommon congenital disorder affecting the face. The condition, which also goes by the names naso-maxillary hypoplasia (NMH) and maxilla-facial dysplasia (MFD), causes the central face to develop inward and may also affect the upper jaw and the nose. A 19-year-old male with a known case of BS presented with a complaint of poor esthetics since birth. Previously, the patient was admitted to a private hospital where he was operated on for cleft lip and palate in the years 2003 and 2005. In 2017, he visited the dental clinic where the orthodontic treatment started for po

One of the most challenging problems for orthodontists is that of multiple missing maxillary teeth in a growing patient. In many patients, a good treatment option is autotransplantation. This case report describes the multidisciplinary treatment of an 11-year-old girl with regional odontodysplasia affecting the maxillary right and left central incisors, and congenitally missing maxillary left lateral incisor and canine. Autotransplantation of the mandibular second premolars to the affected area was combined with orthodontic space closure, and the transplanted premolars were reshaped and restor

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to determine the maximum voluntary molar bite force (MVMBF) in relation to age, sex, lip competency, midline shifting, dental and skeletal malocclusion, overjet, overbite, and crowding.
METHODS: One hundred Saudi patients with orthodontic malocclusion aged 14 to 25 years (51 male and 49 female patients) were investigated in this cross-sectional study. The baseline MVMBF on the right and left side was evaluated in all patients before commencing any orthodontic treatment. The MVMBF was registered with a portable occlusal force gauge in the first molar region

Alveolar bone grafting is routinely performed in repair of alveolar clefts. When the alveolar cleft is wider than 11 mm, however, the survival rate of the bone graft and prognosis are poor. Here, we describe successful orthodontic treatment using interdental distraction osteogenesis (IDO) with a tooth-tooth type distractor to reduce the width of the alveolar cleft in a patient with unilateral cleft lip and palate. The patient was a 12-year-old girl with unilateral cleft lip and palate, maxillary dentition midline deviation, congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors, a palatally-displaced

Although the prevalence of the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is high in adolescents, studies pertaining to adolescent OSAS are less numerous than childhood studies. Cases of adolescent OSAS may consist of residual OSAS after adenotonsillectomy, but most often are de novo cases. Major pathophysiological factors are weight excess or even high-grade obesity, and the association of upper airway narrowing and tonsillar hypertrophy (pharyngeal, palatal or even lingual). ENT and systematic orthodontic assessments are the main points. In case of predisposing factors such as dental, occlusal

INTRODUCTION: Gingival recession (GR) is an unhealthy root exposure that could result in sensitivity, abrasion, root caries and higher chance of plaque collection. The prevalence of GR is higher on the facial surfaces but could also affect the lingual tooth surfaces. Despite the etiology and location of GR, treatment is warranted to improve the long-term periodontal stability around the affected teeth. This case report describes the use of partly deepithelialized free gingival graft (PE-FGG) to augment lingual GR post orthodontic treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: The current report evaluates the

BACKGROUND: Oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising in nonsmokers and nondrinkers remains poorly characterized. We hypothesized that these patients had prior exposure to metallic dental hardware.
METHODS: We utilized a questionnaire querying the lifetime oral health status of 54 patients. Demographics and extensive oral health history were collected.
RESULTS: The majority of patients (74%) had prior exposure to metallic dental hardware. The younger population with almost exclusively oral tongue cancer had a high prevalence of metallic orthodontic braces (40%) within 15 years before

OBJECTIVE: To explore the early dental interventional strategies for adolescent patients and a child patient with cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD).
METHODS: Surgical exposure using the apically repositioned flap technique combined with orthodontic traction was used in the adolescent patients whose ideal treatment time for initiating treatment was missed. For the child patient whose ideal treatment time for initiating treatment was not missed, the simple surgical exposure method was carried out in order to promote the eruption of the impacted incisors.
RESULTS: All the impacted maxillary incisor

INTRODUCTION: The literature on preeruptive intracoronal resorption is sparse, comprising mainly reports of single patients. This study includes 13 patients with preeruptive intracoronal resorption, forwarded for consultation regarding diagnostics and etiology. The purposes were to determine which teeth are affected by the condition and describe how the defect is manifested radiographically.
METHODS: We used visual analyses of dental or panoramic radiographs.
RESULTS: The mandibular second molar appears to be the tooth that is most often affected by preeruptive intracoronal resorption. The r

Mandibular condylar hyperplasia is a rare disorder, characterized by unilateral mandibular overgrowth with overeruption of the dentition on the affected side. Although the etiology is unclear, multiple surgical techniques have been described to correct the associated mandibular bone, occlusal, and soft tissue deformities. Often a condylectomy, to arrest mandibular growth, is combined with various orthognathic procedures to restore occlusion and facial harmony. Here we report our technique of isolated high condylectomy with simultaneous intraoral placement of maxillary and mandibular miniplates
