The Effectiveness of Telemedicine Solutions in Type 1 Diabetes Management: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Telemedicine holds a potential to strengthen self-management support outside health care settings in the everyday management of type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, existing effectiveness reviews are older or include a relatively narrow focus on specific definitions of telemedicine or included databases. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of the effectiveness of telemedicine solutions versus any comparator on diabetes-related outcomes among people with T1D. METHODS: Studies including adults (≥18 years) with T1D published before October 14, 2020, were eligible. Primary outcome w

Portuguese versus Fenton Curve: Which one better explains maternal and neonatal outcomes in Portuguese women with gestational diabetes?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Growth charts are commonly used to identify foetal growth alterations, playing an important role as extreme growth centiles correlate with worse foetal and neonatal outcomes. This study aim was to compare birthweight classification (small for gestational age (SGA), adequate for gestational age and large for gestational age (LGA)) from women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) by applying the population-based growth chart (Fenton Curve) and the standard chart customised for our country (Portuguese Curve). Moreover, we compared obstetric and neonatal outcomes according

Outcome Analysis of the Use of Cerament® in Patients with Chronic Osteomyelitis and Corticomedullary Defects.

BACKGROUND: Chronic osteomyelitis (OM) is a progressive but mostly low-grade infection of the bones. The management of this disease is highly challenging for physicians. Despite systematic treatment approaches, recurrence rates are high. Further, functional and patient-reported outcome data are lacking, especially after osseous defects are filled with bioresorbable antibiotic carriers. OBJECTIVE: To assess functional and patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) following the administration of Cerament® G or V due to corticomedullary defects in chronic OM. METHODS: We conducted a retrospectiv

Fracture dislocations of the proximal humerus treated with open reduction and internal fixation: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of proximal humerus fracture dislocations can be challenging given the extensive injury to the proximal humeral anatomy and increased risk of devascularization of the humeral head often seen in these injuries. The purpose of this study is to undertake a systematic review of the literature on the functional outcomes, rate of revision, and short- and long-term complications for proximal humerus fracture dislocations treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). METHODS: The PubMed and OVID Embase databases were queried for literature reporting on proximal h

Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Outcome after Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Older People.

OBJECTIVE: Older age is often identified as a risk factor for poor outcome from traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, this relates predominantly to mortality following moderate-severe TBI. It remains unclear whether increasing age exerts risk on the expected recovery from mild TBI (mTBI). In this systematic review of mTBI in older age (60+ years), a focus was to identify outcome through several domains - cognition, psychological health, and life participation. METHODS: Fourteen studies were identified for review, using PRISMA guidelines. Narrative synthesis is provided for all outcomes, from

Are neonatal outcomes of triplet pregnancies different from those of singletons according to gestational age?

OBJECTIVES: Multiple pregnancies sustain the high pace of extreme prematurity. Little evidence is available about triplet gestation given the evolution in their management during the last decades. The aim of the study was to compare the neonatal outcomes of triplets with those of matched singletons in a cohort study. METHODS: An observational retrospective cohort study of triplets and matched singletons born between 2004 and 2017 matched by gestational age was conducted. Additionally, the investigation performed in regard to data from the overall Greek population of interest. The primary outc

Short-term health outcomes following whole blood donation: A nationwide, retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Blood donation is associated with a number of adverse events. Most of these are both uncommon and nonsevere, leading to mild discomfort for the donor at worst. However, adverse events occurring outside of the donation facility have largely not been studied. In this study, we aim to further the understanding by performing the first large-scale analysis of short-term risks following whole blood donation. METHODS: We set up a nationwide cohort of donors who donated whole blood between 1987 and 2018. Analyses were conducted using conditional logistic regression in a self-comparison de

Outcomes of the Fontan Operation for Patients With Heterotaxy: A Meta-Analysis of 848 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Heterotaxy is considered a risk factor for adverse events at all stages in the pre-Fontan pathway, and Fontan outcomes are expected to be worse in patients with heterotaxy. The aim of this study was to review existing literature reporting outcomes of the Fontan operation systematically in patients with heterotaxy. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to identify and synthesize early mortality and medium- and long-term survival in heterotaxy patients after the Fontan procedure. Subsequent outcome analyses were stratified by study period era, cohort size, and

Sudden Gains in Internet-Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Sudden gains have been associated with better short- and long-term treatment outcomes in a number of psychiatric disorders. However, no studies to date have evaluated sudden gains in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). We used data from a previous randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of an Internet-based cognitive-behavior treatment (CBT) for BDD. The sample consisted of 47 adults diagnosed with BDD. We compared the treatment outcomes of sudden gainers vs. gradual gainers (i.e., treatment responders with no sudden gains) and non-sudden gainers (i.e., gradual gainers plus nonresponde

Role of Neurocognitive Factors in Academic Fluency for Children and Adults With Spina Bifida Myelomeningocele.

OBJECTIVES: Fluency is a major problem for individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders, including fluency deficits for academic skills. The aim of this study was to determine neurocognitive predictors of academic fluency within and across domains of reading, writing, and math, in children and adults, with and without spina bifida. In addition to group differences, we expected some neurocognitive predictors (reaction time, inattention) to have similar effects for each academic fluency outcome, and others (dexterity, vocabulary, nonverbal reasoning) to have differential effects across outcomes

Accuracy of Thyroid Cartilage Fenestration During Montgomery Medialization Thyroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Accuracy of thyroid cartilage fenestration during Montgomery thyroplasty (MTIS) is considered a key success factor. The primary aim of the study was to retrospectively evaluate the accuracy of fenestration. Furthermore, recent publications indicate a possible discrepancy in MTIS voice outcomes related to gender. The secondary aim of the study was to investigate whether the fenestration accuracy could explain this discrepancy. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Study was performed by virtually drawing the fenestration on a 3D CT scan as proposed by the MTIS's instructions for use (the "expecte

Perioperative goal-directed therapy: A systematic review without meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative goal-directed therapy aims to optimise haemodynamics by titrating fluids, vasopressors and/or inotropes to predefined haemodynamic targets. Perioperative goal-directed therapy is a complex intervention composed of several independent component interventions. Trials on perioperative goal-directed therapy show conflicting results. We aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the benefits and harms of perioperative goal-directed therapy. METHODS: PubMED, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were searched. Trials were included if they h

Utility of copeptin for predicting long-term clinical outcomes in patients with heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Copeptin, a surrogate marker of pro-arginine vasopressin, is expected to be a marker in cardiovascular diseases. Its utility for predicting long-term clinical outcomes in heart failure (HF), however, has not been adequately evaluated in daily clinical practice in Japan. METHODS: To assess the relationship of serum copeptin at admission with long-term clinical outcomes, we evaluated serum copeptin at admission in consecutive 107 patients hospitalized for HF between April 2011 and July 2012. The primary outcome measure was defined as a composite of all-cause death and re-admission f
